    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: stevemoore194 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/6894/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm seeking informnation with my ancestry regarding Hance Lawson and the early Lawson origins in Maryland which are in the lineage of Hance Lawson of Little Annemessex, and who helped found the Asbury Methodist Church there in 1810. This Hance Lawson was possibly married to Ann (Unknown) and/or a Native American woman, perhaps in a later marriage. In particular, I am seeking any additional sources or information which might shed any light on the earliest related Lawsons in this line (in particular, the ancestors of Hance Lawson born around 1738-1740)? One family tree shows Samuel Lawson, born abt. 1723, as the father of Hance Lawson, born about 1740. It shows that his father was also named Hance Lawson, who was married to Isabel (unknown). Most of the Hance Lawson family trees posted on Ancestry.com show Hance Lawson's birth as 1738 and his father and grandfather as both being named "James Lawson," apparently in keeping with the Lawson family lore that Hance Lawson's great grandfather was Sir Thomas Lawson of Jamestown. However, searches of the descendents of Sir Thomas Lawson have thus far failed to reveal any likely link s back to him from the Hance Lawson family It appears that there is a "Hance Lawson" who purchased "Lawson's Adventure" on the Little Annemessex in 1745. There is also Hance Lawson who, together with his wife, Isabel (both being listed as from Dorchester County) sold "Cager's Island lying on the south side of Cager's Straits" in 1746 to a William Haynie. "Cager's Island" was apparently located in the "Cager's Straits", which is now known as Kedges Straits near Smith's Island in the vicinity of Crisfield. So it does appear that Hance Lawson was married to Isabel and may have been from Dorchester, and dealt in land right in the area where the Somerset Lawsons are concentrated. I've found a couple of early Maryland Lawsons, including a "Samuel Lawson" who came to Maryland as a mate on the Dove in 1633, elected not to return to England, and apparently made his way across the Chesapeake to the Eastern Shore. A "Hans Lawson" is shown as immigrating to Maryland in 1670 from Falmouth, England, in "The Early Settlers of Maryland." The Archives of Maryland Online have at least a couple of early references to Hans Lawson in Somerset County in the late 1600s: In 1683, "Hans Lawson to answ unto James Newall of a plea of trespass of Debt" In 1695/96, in a road closure case, "...Samuel Heyden and Hans Lawson, the evidences cited by Maclester, deny making any complaints..." In 1721, a "Hans Lawson", age 90, is listed as having been a Deponent in nearby Dorchester County. A Hance Lawson (c. 1740-1846) is listed as serving in the "Little Annemessex Company" in the Revolutionary War. A Samuel Lawson, along with Hance Lawson and John Lawson, is listed on the 1783 Tax Assessment Rolls as paying taxes on parcels in Little Annamessex. I also found a Samuel Lawson who inherited property in Dorchester County in 1727 from his father-in-law, Robert Reed. Reed, Robert, planter, Dorchester Co., 18th Sept., 1727 ; 2nd Oct., 1727. To cousin Wm. Reed, Is. " son-in-law Samuel Lawson, ex., and 3 daus.-in-law, viz. Ann Tucker, Elizabeth Roe and Margrett Brachaw, resi- due of estate. Test: Redman Fallen, Ann Jones, Mary Green. 19, 365." Hans Lawson is listed in the 1800 Federal Census in Somerset County, and is named as the father of James Lawson who married Nancy Sterling, parents of still another Hance Lawson, born 1823. This last Hance Lawson later became prominent as Sherrif of Somerset County and as a member of the Maryland Legislature. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If so, have you sent a spit sample for yDNA testing to find which Lawson branch you belong to open this address and read it: < http://lawsondna.org/LawsonDNAProject.html > It is self explanitory - in any case, many Lawson branches there may be able to help you.
