You said you had been in touch with Isabella's family, would you be able tell me how to get in touch with them. I am having a devil of a time trying to find out who her parents are. My great grandparents Ephraim and Catherine Ryles arrived in Australia in 1849. We have slowly traced them back to the UK over the years. But we cannot find anything on Isabella. It is believed her father was a brother of g/g/grandfather Ryles. Anyway if you are able to tell me how to get in touch with any of her family I would be extremely grateful. Author: katlaw13 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/2896.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Kath. The Lawson family came from Whitstable Kent, and were involved with many occupations, including farming and the sea. I believe the connection with this member of the family was due to the sea, especially when you read up on the road building that Whitstable became famous for, a by product of coal. Of course white washing ties in with the oyster shells, another connection. Could M have travelled back and forth between ports on barges, and met Isabella who I believe was also from seafarers? With family now spaced around the world, it great that we aee able to piece the history together, starting at thier place of birth, the farm now replaced by Sherwood Estate. So although I undertand the link, and have been in touch with Isabella's family, I am more involved with the Lawson's. Did he ever relocate od did he die in Stokes Co.? It would seem that if his father was John B.E. Lawson that he would likely name a son after his father leaving another John Lawson. Your John and son Patmon of Walker Co., Alabama appear to fit that profile if I remember correctly. But that could be Clement's brother John naming a son after his brother Patman. 2) Has anyone figured out or have a theory how either Sherod/Sherwood and Burrell Lawson fit into this group if at all ? 3) I wonder if Lettie/Letty in the 1803 land transaction is Lydia/Lydie etc. who married William Manis and whose children (at least 1 daughter) married (what would be their cousins) - children of Clement Lawson (e.g. daughter Irene / Orlena married Dalzel Manis). 4) One note I found from a person researching Lawsons in Hawkins Co., TN indicated that Edmund Lawson's wife Patsy (?Martha) who had only child Clem Jr. was the daughter of Revolutionary War John Lawson from Bedford Co., VA & Cumberland Co., NC who married his cousin Anna Lawson. 5) Clement seems possibly linked to the Hall family based on children's names - Curtis, Edmund ... was his wife Meccy/Migha/America a Hall and possibly sister of Randolph/Randall Hall ? Thomas, John, Lilly, Clement, and Patmon Lawson and Randall Hall to Thomas Gains for land on Peters Creek. The deed does not say where they acquired the land, but they are obviously tenants in common. In Stokes County Deed Book 1:124, dated 18 May 1783, there is a state grant to John Lawson for 200 acres, which is the same 200 acres that is sold in Deed Book 5:160 with identical land description shown above. This John Lawson who is identified in the tax lists as John Lawson B.E. (Black Eye) to differentiate him from John Lawson G.P. (Goober Pea). John Lawson B.E. could be the John Lawson listed in the 1800 Stokes County Census who is over 45 years old. John Lawson B.E. children may have sold his land, 15 October 1803 and moved west? They could be the Thomas, John and Clement mention below. Not sure where Patmon Lawson moved to. The name Patmon was used by my relatives, John and Sarah Lawson, for one of their sons in Walker County, Alabama. John stated in a document that he was born in North Carolina but so far I am unable document where in NC. Here is the information I have collect from others for Clement. Thomas, John and Clement Lawson were enumerated in the 1810 Captain Looney District Tax list, Hawkins County, Tennessee. Thomas and John are on page 2 and Clement Lawson is on page 4. Clement Lawson paid taxes for 1 white poll tax. John Lawson paid taxes on 50 acres of land and 1 white poll tax. Clement and John Lawson were listed as privates in Captain Jones Griffin Company from Hawkins County, Tennessee. This company was a part of Colonel Samuel Bunch's 2nd Regiment of East Tennessee Militia. Clement was a private and it indicated he was drafted on 10 January 1814 and deserted 4 March 1814. It was interesting that many others of this unit also deserted. 1825 ca. Hawkins County, Tennessee - Clement Lawson sign divorce petition for future wife of Anderson Lawson, Anna Johnson Cantrell Clement, Elijah, John, Lacey and Washington Lawson are enumerated in the 1830 Henry County, Indiana Census. In Clement's household are 1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-15 and 1 female 30-40 years. Clemant Glawson is enumerated in the 1840 Franklin Township, Henry County, Indiana. In his household are 1 male under 5 years, 1 male 60-70 years, 2 females 10-15 years and 1 female 50-60 years. He is in the 1842 Tax list Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana. Clemant and Mecca (not sure unable to read) Lawson are enumerated in the 1850 Pipe Creek, Madison County, Indiana Census. His age is given as 73 years and born in North Carolina. Clemont and Mickey Lawton are enumerated in the 1860 Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana Census. His age is given as 98 year and born in North Carolina. Material taken from records filed in H.B. Stamps Memorial Library, Rogersville, Tennessee. Clement Lawson. Lost page from some book. Page 27. Material submitted Adele Lawson, 2125 44th Street, Los Alamos, New Mexico, 87544. Great-great-great-grandfather. John Lawson of Stokes or Surry County, North Carolina. Possibly could have been born in Virginia. Great great grandfather, Clement Lawson born 1775 Surry County, North Carolina. (Not sure of birthplace) Married America-----. The couple died in Indiana after 1850. Great grandfather, Bands Lawson born ca. 1815 North Carolina. Died after 1880, marrried Thursia (Proviance?) of North Carolina. Part Indian. Grandfather Curren born 1845 Hawkins County, Tennessee. Died 1911, was a Civil War soldier. Married first to Mary Lawson, daughter of Thomas, and second to Malinda Gilbert, my husband's grandmother. Father, William Jesse Lawson born 1880, Hawkins County, Tennessee. Died 1970 Hancock County, Tennessee, married in 1918 to Bessie Williams. Husband, William Hubert Lawson born 30 Aug 1919 Hawkins County, Tenne! ssee. Married Adele Gibson, born 1 June 1922, Hancock County, Tennessee. Issue three daughters and seven granddaughters. Lawson Newsletter #11, page 85. Lawson Newsletter #17, page 139. Mason Lawson, I believe, is the "Mace" Lawson of 1830 Hawkins Co., TN listed next to a Peter Lawson and another name associated Isaac Mendenhall who went to Iowa and appears to have relatives in Madison/Henry Co., IN by old Clem Lawson and his clan including Lawson / Manis / Robinson / Hall / Reason / Bullen. Haynes one of the acting Justices of the said County, Sarah Lawson who being duly sworn, deposeth and sayeth that she, though young at the time, well recollects that her brothers Thomas and John Bryant were both soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Recollecting that at one time they came home and told their parents they had entered during the war and it occurred them to grieved boys much on the account of doing so. Recollected their father going with them some distance when they went again into the service. They all at this time lived with their father and mother in Halifax County, Virginia. Recollected when her brother Thomas Bryant, the applicant, came home from Gate's defeat, her brother John never returned and she has never seen him since that time, it was approved and believed by the family he was killed. That his father at this time lived in Randolph County, NC, having removed from Halifax, VA. She well recollects his tour o! f service after the battle of Guilford, under Captain Joseph Clark and Alexander Smith who with _____ as she understood Col. Collins. I would assume he is closely related to Clement Lawson who is living very close to him in the 1850 Madison County, IN census, but that is a guess. Once the Lawsons left from VA and NC into Tennessee, SC and Georgia the records are not as good as the ones in VA and NC. The tax lists are very helpful but none of the three states have the tax records like VA and NC. I have been to the state libraries in Atlanta, GA, Columbia, SC and Knoxville, TN and was disappointed as to the amount of information they had. I believe some of the county libraries have more data but I have not been able to visit them. Our Lawsons did not leave a lot of wills or Bibles that would have been a great in sorting them out. 3.
