    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lonestar357 Surnames: Lawson, Townlin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/6900/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found an interesting item on ebay, and I'm not the seller, that has Elizabeth's name imprinted. Actually, it is a set of dog tags, listing her as the next of kin for a Mr. Charles H. Townlin. Her address is shown as Moody, Texas. (McLennan County) Thought perhaps a descendant might like to have these dog tags, and also might know the significance of these two people - with different names - being shown together on the dog tags. Author: CelesteHolly51 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/6897.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Do you have any place names? There is also a DNA bank that is being built for African American DNA - DNA is about the best way to find heritage out of Africa. Have you seen the PBS and Ancestry TV specials on tracing black heritage? I do not know the name of the African American DNA data bank/project but you should be able to find it on Google or somewhere online. Those TV specials could be accessed through PBS - they worked on Oprah's ancestry and some others, and the other was "Who do you think you are?" A program sponsored by Ancestry - it was on either NBC or ABC - NBC, I think. Those stations might have those programs available on their websites. It would give you some clues how to start - they did Emmit Smith and Spike Lee's ancestry/genealogy. If they were fathered by a white Lawson the yDNA might match someone on the Lawson family tree DNA site. You might have to yous mitochondrial/female DNA to trace back to Africa. That is what is usually used. Hope that helps, Celeste Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know her father was Amos son of Drewry and Hannah Potts Lawson of Claiborne Co., TN. DNA shows no Indian heritage thru the Lawson name, but the stories told were that Wurtah Watts was the mother of Drewry! I for one, have never found anything that ties him to her! Boy have I looked for records to prove that!! The name Greenberry was very common among folks in that time. I don't have any thoughts about where it originated or why! I think Standing Deer was a real Indian. Thomas and Nathan were both sons of Drewry! Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [LAWSON] Family Tree DNA Extends Reduced Price Sale on DNA
    2. robert mclaren
    3. Family Tree DNA is having a reduced price sale on DNA testing. The sale starts on 5 June and now ends on 30 June. Three tests are on sale -- the 37-marker test, the 67-marker test, and the 37-marker test plus mtDNA test. I recommend the 67-marker test. I invite all male Lawsons to take advantage of this special and join the Clan MacLaren Surname DNA Project (Lawson is one of the Clan surnames). In order to test in the MacLaren Project, you must be a male bearing the Lawson surname. DNA tesing has proved to be very useful as a tool for our genealogy. I cannot cite prices on RootsWeb, so contact me if you want to know the prices or have other questions about the DNA tests. Or, you can join the Clan MacLarern Surname Project by going to http://www.familytreedna.com and searching for MacLaren. Yours aye, Boib McLaren Genealogist, Clan MacLaren Society (based in Scotland) Chairman, Genealogy Committee, Clan MacLaren Society of North America Administrator, Clan MacLaren Surname Project (Worldwide) Member, Association of Professional Genealogists Member, Genealogical Speakers Guild Robert McLaren bobmclaren@earthlink.net Why Wait? 1. [LAWSON] Hance Lawson of Somerset County, Crisfield, Eastern Shore, Maryland, MD
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: stevemoore194 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/6894/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm seeking informnation with my ancestry regarding Hance Lawson and the early Lawson origins in Maryland which are in the lineage of Hance Lawson of Little Annemessex, and who helped found the Asbury Methodist Church there in 1810. This Hance Lawson was possibly married to Ann (Unknown) and/or a Native American woman, perhaps in a later marriage. In particular, I am seeking any additional sources or information which might shed any light on the earliest related Lawsons in this line (in particular, the ancestors of Hance Lawson born around 1738-1740)? One family tree shows Samuel Lawson, born abt. 1723, as the father of Hance Lawson, born about 1740. It shows that his father was also named Hance Lawson, who was married to Isabel (unknown). Most of the Hance Lawson family trees posted on Ancestry.com show Hance Lawson's birth as 1738 and his father and grandfather as both being named "James Lawson," apparently in keeping with the Lawson family lore that Hance Lawson's great grandfather was Sir Thomas Lawson of Jamestown. However, searches of the descendents of Sir Thomas Lawson have thus far failed to reveal any likely link s back to him from the Hance Lawson family It appears that there is a "Hance Lawson" who purchased "Lawson's Adventure" on the Little Annemessex in 1745. There is also Hance Lawson who, together with his wife, Isabel (both being listed as from Dorchester County) sold "Cager's Island lying on the south side of Cager's Straits" in 1746 to a William Haynie. "Cager's Island" was apparently located in the "Cager's Straits", which is now known as Kedges Straits near Smith's Island in the vicinity of Crisfield. So it does appear that Hance Lawson was married to Isabel and may have been from Dorchester, and dealt in land right in the area where the Somerset Lawsons are concentrated. I've found a couple of early Maryland Lawsons, including a "Samuel Lawson" who came to Maryland as a mate on the Dove in 1633, elected not to return to England, and apparently made his way across the Chesapeake to the Eastern Shore. A "Hans Lawson" is shown as immigrating to Maryland in 1670 from Falmouth, England, in "The Early Settlers of Maryland." The Archives of Maryland Online have at least a couple of early references to Hans Lawson in Somerset County in the late 1600s: In 1683, "Hans Lawson to answ unto James Newall of a plea of trespass of Debt" In 1695/96, in a road closure case, "...Samuel Heyden and Hans Lawson, the evidences cited by Maclester, deny making any complaints..." In 1721, a "Hans Lawson", age 90, is listed as having been a Deponent in nearby Dorchester County. A Hance Lawson (c. 1740-1846) is listed as serving in the "Little Annemessex Company" in the Revolutionary War. A Samuel Lawson, along with Hance Lawson and John Lawson, is listed on the 1783 Tax Assessment Rolls as paying taxes on parcels in Little Annamessex. I also found a Samuel Lawson who inherited property in Dorchester County in 1727 from his father-in-law, Robert Reed. Reed, Robert, planter, Dorchester Co., 18th Sept., 1727 ; 2nd Oct., 1727. To cousin Wm. Reed, Is. " son-in-law Samuel Lawson, ex., and 3 daus.-in-law, viz. Ann Tucker, Elizabeth Roe and Margrett Brachaw, resi- due of estate. Test: Redman Fallen, Ann Jones, Mary Green. 19, 365." Hans Lawson is listed in the 1800 Federal Census in Somerset County, and is named as the father of James Lawson who married Nancy Sterling, parents of still another Hance Lawson, born 1823. This last Hance Lawson later became prominent as Sherrif of Somerset County and as a member of the Maryland Legislature. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: drdjones Surnames: Lawson, Amyx, Murrell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/3820.1.1.1.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, we had found that death certificate a couple of years ago. Since then, through several pension files, we found that the children of Banks, Hennis and Martin Lawson were cousins. While the degree of cousin was not stated, it seems likely to be first cousins. Remember that Mary, daughter of James and Nancy Lawson, had a child out of wedlock with Samuel P. Murrell, the son of James Murrell and Margaret Burton. That child was Joel Murrell who was raise by Pleasant G. Murrell. Some of Pleasant G. Murrell's children also married some of the children of Banks Lawson. So, I think that we are accumulating more evidence that Banks, Hennis, Martin, and James Lawson were brothers and son of Burrell. One mystery is the relationship between Burrell Lawson and Clement Lawson. Some think that they are the same individual. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
