Randolph Shields Great Smoky Mountains Association page 76 DANIEL B. LAWSON Daniel Bird Lawson (1827-1905) was the son of Howell and Mary Bird Lawson of Greene County, Tennessee. The famiiy moved to Blount County prior to 1850, although it is not clear whether they first moved to Wear's Cove or Tuckaleechee Cove. Dan went to work for Peter Cable in Cades Cove and married his older daughter, Mary Jane, in 1850. Dan Lawson was an influential citizen of Cades Cove and Blount County. He was for a time the postmaster, and for several years a justice of peace. He added to his original purchase from Peter Cable, especially taking advantage of the public sales of the lands of D.D. Foute. Lawson eventually owned a strip of land running south to north across the center of the cove, from the state line to the crest of Cades Cove Mountain. He was active in the Methodist Church, serving as a trustee, and donated the land for the "Northern" Church after the Civil War. His property was divided among his five surviving children Two had died young. The present "Peter Cable Place" is a part of the Lawson home, probably the first portion constructed. From time to time frame additions were built as the family grew, until the final structure was a rambling style home. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Both properties were bounded by the property of William Boils/Boyles, and the ages of Thomas and Celia seem to fall in line with an adult Thomas signing the 1803 deed. So, unless someone has any evidence to refute this, then I am inclined to believe that he was the 1803 Thomas. However, we do have to consider that it is possible that Thomas married to Celia was a son of one of the other Lawsons named in the deed. But, if that was the case there should be some transfer of the property to him from one of the named parties to the 1803 transaction." Another source states: "This is an old message. But, the original intent of the message is that the estate settlement cannot be extended to anyone other than the Stokes/Surry County descendents who resided in Stokes/Surry County in 1840/1850. There is no evidence that these Lawson were found in Hawkins or Hancock counties in 1840/1850." Another source states: "Tucker Lawson is named in the 1841 estate records of Thomas Lawson and Celia Hall as their son along with Flynt, Preston, Kinah, Polly, Sally, Thompson, Nancy, and Catharine. ! In a Petition from James Sands about the lands of Thomas Lawson, dated September 1841. It listed his track of land lying on the head of Barnes Branch adjoining the lands of William Boyles and the lands of petitioner and consisting of 206 acres. Which said land divided to Tucker Lawson, Flint Lawson, Preston Lawson, Kinch Lawson, Charles Brown and wife Patsy, Polly Lawson, Hugh Lawson, Sally Lilley, John Fag and wife Francis, Thompson, Nancy and Catharine Lawson, minors his heirs and next of kin as tenants in common. It indicated that petitioner (James Sands) was the purchaser and owner of five (5) shares in said track of land to wit the interest of Tucker, Flynt, Preston, Kinch, Charles Brown and wife Patsy. That 1/3 of the land and the dwelling house was given to Celey Lawson, in lieu of dower, she being the widow of Thomas Lawson. James M. Cloud was his lawyer. The above papers also indicated that Thomas died December 1837." John, Boise, ID Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The 1840 records only provide a tally, by age and gender. The 1840 records show three older sons who do not appear on the 1850 census. Sarah appears to have been Issac's second wife, she was too young to have been the mother of three teen-aged sons in 1840. There are no Lawsons shown in the 1830 records for Sussex County. You need to check into Morman Lawson of the Falling River Lawson's. He is beleived to have had four daughters that married Manis. They would have been born around 1777 to 1790. Check Stokes Co NC.
