However, I can't find any close connection between the Howes and the Manis or Lawson family. William's son Jacob married Winny Lawson, daughter of Preston Lawson. There is documentation that suggests that Preston Lawson was a brother of Martin and Alexander Lawson of Surry County, NC. There father was Thomas Lawson who appeared to have died before 1820. There is also rumor of Native American ancestry in the Howe family - since the Howes are supposed to be from Germany and so Clement Lawson's family, perhaps it is the Comer line ? Now, the fact they were Stevens is interesting. Stephen Stevens was apparently married to Susan Unknown (likely a Manis or related family). They had several children who disappeared. She appears to be the mother of Nelson Manis' wife Elizabeth Stevens, who daughter Mary appears to be the Mary Manis who married Current Lawson. Widow Susan married Thomas Lawson who appears to be the father of 1840 Wallen Lawson and Stokeley Lawson. She also appears to be the Susan Lawson who was prosecuted for L&A with Peter Lawson. It seems to suggest that Thomas Lawson Sr and Clement Lawson were probably brothers and were the same individuals named in the Stokes County land transaction. One son's name was William Pascal Lawson. On the death cert, his father is listed as Clemuel Lawson and mother is Polly Stevens. This is the same as Clement/Clemuel's Civil War record statement about his first wife being Polly (aka Mary, Ann and Polly) Stevens and being married in Rogersville, Hawkins Co., TN by a ?Thomas Walden (?Walling/Wallen). Also we have the other Hawkins county marriage of Lawson to a Stevens to consider. We don't know how many children Clement and\or Burrell really had. As far as I can tell, Burrell and Clement never appear together in any document or census together except for some separate tax records in a single year in Stokes County, NC. We do know that Clement served in the war of 1812 in Tennessee, so he had to come to Tennesse before that. Burrell and Clement would have been the same age in 1830 (50-60). There was a 50-60 man living with John Lawson, so it could be Burrell living there if John Lawson was the younger individual. There is a record of an Elijah Lawson starting a church in Madison County, IN after he disappeared from Henry County, IN. 1830 Henry County, IN Franklin Township Clement Lawson (live next to Alexander Trent before 1830 in Hawkins County) John Lawson Washington Lawson Lacey Lawson Elijah Lawson 1840 Henry County, IN Franklin Township Clement Lawson Mason Lawson (lived next to Alexander Trent in 1830 Hawkins County) Henderson Lawson Curtis Lawson Other Townships Henderson Lawson Ransom Lawson Dallas Manis 1850 Madison County, IN Clement Lawson Curtis Lawson Mason Lawson Andrew Lawson Richard Lawson (lived next to Banks Lawson in 1840 Hawkins County) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Piney was likely pregnant with Gaines in 1840. I still think that she was the wife of the John Lawson who disappeared in 1840 along with Lacey and Washington Lawson. Burrell was not in Hawkins County in 1836, so I am pretty sure that they just came back from Indiana. She had John, Clem/Clen/McClenan, and Jane in 1840 and Gaines was born in 1840. Cane was born later. It doesn't seem likely that she was a mistress after 1840, or she would have likely had many other children like Sarah Manis did. Commodore Brown was the son of Samuel Brown and he married Orlena Winstead, the grandaughter of Banks Lawson. His Thomas was born about 1885. But, other sons of Thomas East Brown Sr had Thomas' as well. I don't know whether Samuel Brown was a brother of Thomas East Brown Sr or not. It would take a Brown expert to sort it out. I would need more information to track it down. I haven't followed any Brown except Commodore because he was an inlaw.
