There could be two Thomas Lawsons in Surry, a father and a son because a Thomas Lawson first appears in 1779 purchasing 100 acres from the State of NC on Rocky Creek. Also a Martin Lawson bought 5 acres on Cadles Creek from Thomas Bryant in 1779. Part of the description is Thomas Lawson's corner. The witnesses were Martin D. Word and Thomas Word, father and son. Martin D. Word was bondsman when Elizabeth Lawson b.1803 m. my ancestor, Boardvine Braswell b. 1799, so I know this is my family. So, it looks like there are two different sets of Thomas Lawson and Martin Lawson, different generations. I have a note, "Elizabeth Lawson stated her husband's sister, Elizabeth Lawson & her husband's cousin, Wm. Bryant, 'now a resident of Patrick Co., VA, but a former resident of Stokes Co., but went over the state line to marry Moses Amos Lawson in Caswell Co, NC." Moses Amos Lawson b. 1765 Halifax Co VA d 1813 Stokes Co NC m. 1789 Caswell Co, NC, to Elizabeth Bradley b. 1766 Halifax Co, VA, d. after 1855 Stokes Co. See Stokes Co. History Book #624, pg. 332. Could there be two different Lawson families in this area? Does the Bryant connection connect the Surry and Stokes Lawsons? Then Martin Lawson appears in the 1820 census, a male 26-45 (1775-1794), who could be a son of Thomas Lawson of Surry. Martin appears in the overseers of the roads Cadles Creek with my ancestor Boardvine Braswell. Martin witnessed an Alexander Lawson deed in 1828 when he sold 100 acres, which may be the 100 acres owned by Thomas Lawson. I have to get the deed and check the property description. Is this Martin Lawson the Martin Lawson in Hawkins County? Alexander Lawson who appears to be the same age as Martin, married Susannah Forkner in 1819 and they moved to I think Kentucky. Elizabeth had a sister named Ursula who married Levi Barber. I have been trying to get the female descendants of Ursula Lawson Barber to mtDNA test which should match the male mtDNA is they are related. Two different Martin Lawsons (based on age) appear in Surry County and at least one also in Hawkins County, NC. I have not yet had time to completely research Hawkins County to make a connection.
