Author: jlakin46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/6860.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi all, I agree with Bill. I'd like to add that many Native Americans kept the fact that they were Indians secret due to the restrictions placed on them by the US government. They could not own land and were, in most cased treated as second class citizens. Many Native Americans only whispered the facts of their heritage to their children. This was true even up to my grandfather's time. My Lawsons are NA, but all we had were hints of it in our oral traditions, until we had the DNA test. I have the names of thousands of descendants from our David Lawson b 1803 NC/TN. Considering this, any one who has an oral tradition of NA ancestry should not be put off by not finding their names on any Indian Rolls. Author: bjllr Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lawson/6860.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: When I read your reply, I'm reminded of the abuse and government red tape our ancestors suffered. As former Vice-Chairman of the American Indian Coalition, I can tell you that more Indian families names don't appear on the rolls than do. Why, for several reasons but mostly because the government tried to limit the retribution they had to pay for all the lies and broken treaties over the years. Any student of history can tell you that many early settlers had common-law Indian wives. The fact that they were not married in ceremony you approve doesn't make them less a part of your family. All along the Trail of Tears, white men married attractive Indian girls. The fact that they never made it to a reservation doesn't make them less of an Indian. There a lot of Lawson families with Indian blood. Having a name on a roll doesn't give you Indian blood. DNA testing is the only true indicator of Indian blood. Please don't spread false or incorrect information. Don't perpetuate the lies that have been told down through the years. Most applicants for the Guion-Miller role were rejected. There were a few Lawson American Indians, but most others had no proof other then an old family stories, and a close check by the government proved most claims to be a story. Lawson (born in New York City,Oct 1864 or abt.) and his descendants. John's father, William was also born in NY but his mother, Anna McKiernan was born in Ireland (according to the census of 1900). John was a tobacco cutter and lived at 302 Gates Avenue in Brooklyn, NY from 1920 -1930s. John's wife, Margaret Kelly Lawson was also born in NY City. John and Margaret had one child; my grandfather, William Lawson, son of John H. Lawson, was born March 3, 1892. He was born in NY City. John's wife Margaret died after childbirth and remarried and had six children; Alice (DOB May 1896) Lawson Nash, Agnes (DOB Jan. 1899) Lawson Kennedy, Florence (DOB March 1900) who never married and Anna (DOB 1902) Lawson Menville and twins Hannah and Loretta who died as young children in 1904. I am looking for possible siblings for John H Lawson. He may have had a brother named William (DOB 1862 abt) and sister Annie(DOB 1856 abt.). Any info on NY City Lawsons would be appreciated.
