I would also like to know if anyone knows if Hugh's brothers are David and Tyre/Tyra. Hugh Lawson was born abt. 1800 probably in Virginia, and died around 1861 in McMinn County, Tennessee. He married Mary Ann abt. 1831. Mary Ann Campbell was born abt. 1810 in Tennessee and died abt. 1866 in Meigs County, Tennessee. They had the following children: 1. Caronetta born 1832 in Tennessee. She married John Riley Gennoe (convicted for murdering Thomas Lawson). 2. Nathan/Nathaniel born 15 Sep 1833 in McMinn County, Tennessee and died 7 Dec 1919 in McLennan County, Texas. 3. Elias born abt 1836 in Tennessee. He married Martha J Williams. 4. Louisa born about 1837 in Tennessee. She married #1 James Snider and #2 John Howard. 5. Sarah born abt 1838 in Tennessee. 6. David born about 1839 in Tennessee. He married Jane Williams. 7. William born abt 1840 in Tennessee. 8. John N born Dec 1843 in Tennessee and died 29 Dec 1926 in Tennessee. He married Cynthia Elizabeth Slaughter (my great great grandparents). 9. Mary Ann born abt 1847 in Tennessee. She married David or John Powers (not sure of the first name). 10. Hugh born abt 1851 in Tennessee and died before 1861 in McMinn County, Tennessee. 11. Tennessee born abt 1856 in McMinn County, Tennessee and died Nov 1880 in Tennessee. She married Griffin Keith. I found Hugh and Mary on the 1850 census in McMinn Co. He is 50 and born in VA and she is 40 and born in TN. Their children are: Caronetta, 18; Elias, 14; Louisa, 15 or 13; Sarah, 12; David, 11; Wm, 10; Nathan, 7; John, 4; Polly, 3. There is also Sally, age 60 (his mom maybe?). Other Lawsons on this census living very close to Hugh were David and Amy Lawson, Russell and Mary Lawson, Mike and Jane Lawson, Richard and Mary Lawson, Tyre and Polly Lawson, and Unreadable and Amy Lawson. I also found them on the 1860 census in McMinn Co. Hugh is 60 and born in SC, and Mary A. is 48 and born in TN. Their children are: Sarah, 22; David, 21; William, 18; John, 14; Polly A., 12; Hugh Jr., 8; Tennessee, 4. Other Lawsons on this census living very close to Hugh were Nathan and Mary Lawson, Elias and Martha J. Lawson, and David and Jane Lawson, I did find an Elias Lawson on the 1860 census in McMinn Co., married to Martha J. and also in the 1870 census in Hamilton Co., married to Barbary? I looked for Lawsons in the 1840, 1830 and 1820 census in McMinn Co. In 1840 I found Tarry, Jacob, Richard, Isom, Alf, David, David, and Hugh (fits the age of my Hugh). In 1830 I found Allen, David L., David R., Isa, Jacob, John, and Nathan. In 1820 I found no one in McMinn, which is odd I thought. However, in what I've been able to find about the Lawsons in McMinn, it's said they came from Stokes Co., NC. I did find several Lawsons there in the 1820 census: David, Elisha, Eliza, Hanah, James, Jesse, John, Joshua, Herod, Thomas, Milly, Wm. Is is true that the McMinn Co. Lawsons came from North Carolina? Several family trees I've found show Hugh Lawson born in 1795 and married first to a Polly and then to Lavina. They also show the children I listed above. However, my Hugh was born in 1800 and the only questionable thing is where he was actually born and the names of his parents. I did find another Hugh Lawson, born 1795 and married to Lavina. This is a different Hugh, although he may be related to mine. I'd like to know that. I'd also like to know if any of Hugh's children served in the Civil War and what regiments they were in. And does anyone have any more information about John Riley Jennoe killing Thomas Lawson? I do know that he was convicted of 2nd Degree murder. Who was Thomas Lawson? This is from Hugh's Will: Lawson, Hugh WB F 397, Will Exec. 20 Feb 1858, proven May 1861; to wife Mary Ann until youngest child comes of age. Exec; John Atkinson. Wit; A. Barb, Tyra Lawson. WB F 400, Invt. sold 30 May 1861 CC 260, filed 5 Sep 1870. Hugh Lawson died leaving widow Mary Ann who died 1866 in Meigs Co., Tn and children; Elias, David, and WM. of Hamilton Co., TN; John of Meigs Co.; Mary ann wife of David or John Powers; Hugh, decd, a minor; Tennessee a minor of Meigs Co. who by 1876 has married Griffin Keith of Hamilton Co.; Cainsetta wife of John Gennoe of Bledsoe Co, TN; Nathan a nonresident; Louisa, dec'd, who married first James Snider and second John Howard of Bledsoe Co.; and Sarah, decd, unmarried. The children of Louisa, dec'd, are William Gilbert Snider a minor and -- Howard a minor, both of Bledsoe Co., It looks like most of the family was in Meigs Co, TN during the late 1860's or in Hamilton Co. which is south of Meigs. James Lawson had a very large family but many of them never married and lived with the brothers John and Michael. I have updated my tree with all the dates and names listed from the bible if you want to check it out, feel free. Coincidentally, the Lawson family graveyard where James and Elizabeth are buried is located in Mercersburg, PA. There farm is now the Whitetail Golf Course, the graveyard is located right in the middle of the course. My great great grandfather is Morgan's brother Michael Lawson. One of the brothers, Simon, moved to the Liberty, MO area and one of his son's Martin Lawson became a prominent attorney there and there is at least one book and an article about him online. My parents inherited some Lawson photos, I'm sure they have one of Morgan since there are photos depicting a young man circa 1880 postmarked Illinois but I can't be sure. Anyway, sorry it took 4 years to answer your post, but I can scan the entry from the family bible for you to lin! k to your page if you'd like. Sincerely Bill Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
