McMurphey Alice Marie McMurphey, 91, 913 Congress St., died March 24, 2001, at the Olathe Good Samaritan Center at Olathe. Mrs. McMurphey, a lifetime resident of Lyon County, was a seamstress at Grandma's Pincushion and at Meschke's Men's Store. Alice Marie Laws, the daughter of Vinson and Mary Elizabeth Young Laws, was born Aug. 28, 1909, at Melvern. She attended school in Hartford and received licensed practical nurse training. She married George Olin McMurphey on March 8, 1928, at Madison. He died June 29, 1961. Mrs. McMurphey was a member of the Non-Denominational Christian Church in Emporia. She is survived by six daughters, Myra Jones of Emporia, Margaret Jean McHugh of Hartford, Marlene Buck of Olathe, Marilyn Lambert of Overland Park, Mildred Moorman of Mission Hills and Marjorie Hylton of Houston, Texas; two sons, Glen McMurphey of Emporia and William McMurphey of Sabetha; two sisters, Edna Craig of Topeka and Margaret Garrison of Tulsa, Okla.; 31 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. A son, Don McMurphey; a daughter, Mary Alice Blair; three sisters, Bertha Laws, Ida Laws and Helen Laws; four brothers, Walter Laws, George Laws, John Laws and Howard Laws; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren died earlier. The funeral will be at 7 p.m. today at the Carlson Funeral Home. Kevin Holman will conduct the service. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until service time. The private burial will be later. The family requests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Lyon County Historical Society and sent in care of the funeral home.
