Laws Lewis L. Laws, 84, former resident of Espafiola, died Sept. 26 in Albuquerque. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 5, in the Block-Salazar Mortuary Chapel with Rev. M. C. Bonecutter officiating. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Mr. Laws was one of nine children and in 1932 at the age of 15 moved with his family from Oklahoma to Santa Fe where he was employed at the Safeway store. He met and married his wife Florence in Santa Fe and an uncle convinced him to go into the sewing machine business. He sold sewing machines throughout New Mexico and Arizona, and eventually opened a Singer Sewing Machine shop in Prescott, Ariz., where they lived until World War II when they moved back to New Mexico and purchsed property in Fairview. Mr. Laws joined the Navy and served in the Philippines during the war and his wife remained in EspaƱola working as a beautician and keeping the family farm going. On his return from the Navy, Laws purchased Globe Furniture and a motel in EspaƱola, and his wife continued to run a beauty shop. In the early 1960s they moved the furniture store to Arroyo Seco where he also purchased and developed land. They remained there until moving to Albuquerque in the 1990s for health reasons. He is survived by a son Bruce of Albuquerque, a sister Mattie Clem of Oklahoma, three grandchildren and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence, and two children, John and Alice. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Assn., both in Albuquerque.
