    2. Alice Marie McMurphey, 91, Emporia, KS. passed away Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center, Olathe, KS. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Carlson Funeral Home, Emporia, KS. there will be a private interment at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to Lyon County Historical Society and may be sent in care of Carlson Funeral Home, 501 W. Sixth Ave., Emporia, KS. 66801. Mrs. McMurphey was born August 28, 1909, in Melvern, KS. to Vinson and Mary Elizabeth (Young) Laws. She was a life long resident of Lyon County, KS. and had received Licensed Practical Nurse training. She was a seamstress at Grandma's Pincushion and at Meschke's Men Store. She was married March 9, 1926, to George Olin McMurphey, in Madison, KS. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1961. She was also preceded in death by a son, Don McMurphey; a daughter, Mary Alice Blair; three sisters, Bertha Laws, Ida Laws, and Helen Laws; four brothers, Walter Laws, George Laws, John Laws, and Howard Laws, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Survivors include six daughters, Margaret Jean McHugh of Hartford, KS., Myra Jones, of Emporia, KS., Mildred Moorman, of Mission Hills, KS., Marjorie Hylton, of Houston, TX., Marilyn Lambert of Overland Park, KS., and Marlene Buck, of Olathe, KS.' two sons, William McMurphey of Sabetha, KS., and Glen McMurphey of Emporia, KS; and two sisters, Edna Craig, of Topeka, KS.; and Margaret Garrison, of Tulsa, OK.; 31 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren. Gillfillan, 77, Findlay, formerly of Fostoria, died March 6, 2001 at 2:45 a.m. at Fox Run Manor, Findlay. She was born Sept. 17, 1923 in Rudolph to Ray McKinley and Mary V. (Coldren) Laws and they are deceased. She married Herb Gillfillan in 1979 in Jellico, Tenn. and he died Nov. 7, 1989. She is survived by a son, Irvin Laney, Seattle, Wash.; three stepsons, Dennis and Rick Gillfillan, both of Forest; and Gary Gillfillan, Kenton; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Helen) Thompson, Wooster; and Mrs. Shane (Beverly) Wagener, Perrysburg; two stepdaughters, Marlene Gillfillan, Grant; and Mrs. Greg (Lisa) Ananice, Dunkirk; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and eight stepgrandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Edsel Laney; and a sister, Margaret Bankey. Mrs. Gillfillan had worked as a waitress at the Dark Horse and Airport Cafe, Findlay; and the Fostoria Elks Club. She was a life member of the Fostoria Elks Club and also was a member of the Fostoria Eagles Club and Forest VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Funeral service was March 9, 2001 at Mann-Hare Funeral Home, the Rev. Jeremy Gillfillan officiating. Burial was in Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria. A son, Don McMurphey; a daughter, Mary Alice Blair; three sisters, Bertha Laws, Ida Laws and Helen Laws; four brothers, Walter Laws, George Laws, John Laws and Howard Laws; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren died earlier. The funeral will be at 7 p.m. today at the Carlson Funeral Home. Kevin Holman will conduct the service. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until service time. The private burial will be later. The family requests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Lyon County Historical Society and sent in care of the funeral home.

Glen attended Beloit Memorial High School. He was married to Jeanne Hamilton on Dec. 18, 1949. He retired in 1982 from General Motors. Glen was very active in Janesville Moose Lodge #197, holding several offices, earning his Fellowship Degree in 1985. He was awarded 'Moose of the Year' in 1998. Glen was an avid paperback and western book reader and a member of the Afton Community Church. Surviving are her husband, Donald Laws; a daughter, Renee Laws of Burnsville; three sons, Marvin, Ben and Ricky Laws, all of the home; two sisters, Velvie Hudgins and Pearl Ledford of Burnsville; and a brother, Ernest Robinson of Burnsville. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Prices Creek Union Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Ricky Bennett, Gene McPeters and Joe George will officiate. Burial will be in Hoit Hensley Cemetery. Ralph Laws b.6/1832? married nancy Clayton b.1834? around 1858/59? (dates from 1880 census)both listed born in VA. I was told that one or both were part Native American & Black. Nancy was said to have be born in Clayhill VA, but I haven't been able to find that on any maps. They had 12 children; Irene, Ralph grew up to be both a(Methodist & Baptist Preacher), Tom/Thomas, Kattie or Katheryn, Mary, Azalis, Charles 1/2 brother?, Nancy/Nannie b.1872 Winchester Va, James, Rachel, missing name, Luvenia b. 10/10/1883 White Post Va. (my Grandmother) she married James Robert Moore b.6/26/1883Winchester, in 1903. James was the son of Joseph Moore & Martha Newman Moore. I found Ralph and Nancy Laws in the 1870, 1880, census and possibly in the 1860 census, Clarke County. There was another family with almost identical names. I was told that Ralph & Nancy are buried on their property in White Post Va, that is still in the family. Any help would be appreciated, I would love to find out more about the Native American side of the family. I have pictures of my Mother and Aunt dressed up in Native America in clothes that they said they often wore when they were little between the ages of 5-9 years old. Luvenia was baptized in 1893 at Freewill Baptist Church White Post?.

Ralph Laws b.6/1832? married nancy Clayton b.1834? around 1858/59? (dates from 1880 census)both listed born in VA. I was told that one or both were part Native American & Black. Nancy was said to have be born in Clayhill VA, but I haven't been able to find that on any maps. They had 12 children; Irene, Ralph grew up to be both a(Methodist & Baptist Preacher), Tom/Thomas, Kattie or Katheryn, Mary, Azalis, Charles 1/2 brother?, Nancy/Nannie b.1872 Winchester Va, James, Rachel, missing name, Luvenia b. 10/10/1883 White Post Va. (my Grandmother) she married James Robert Moore b.6/26/1883Winchester, in 1903. James was the son of Joseph Moore & Martha Newman Moore. I found Ralph and Nancy Laws in the 1870, 1880, census and possibly in the 1860 census, Clarke County. There was another family with almost identical names. I was told that Ralph & Nancy are buried on their property in White Post Va, that is still in the family. Any help would be appreciated, I would love to find out more about the Native American side of the family. I have pictures of my Mother and Aunt dressed up in Native American clothes that they said they often wore when they were little between the ages of 5-9 years old. Luvenia was baptized in 1893 at Freewill Baptist Church White Post?

Gillfillan, 77, of Fox Run Manor and formerly of Northview Drive, Fostoria, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at her residence. She was the mother and mother-in-law of Helen and Ronald Thompson of Wooster. Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Mann-Hare Funeral Home, 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria, with Pastor Jeremy Gillfillan officiating. Burial will be at Fountain Cemetery in Fostoria.
