    1. [LAWS-L] North Carolina LAWS lines (late 1700s to middle 1800s)
    2. Nancy Clayton
    3. Hello Laws searchers: I've been reading the new postings about LAWS family lines of North Carolina in the past few days -- especially about the William Welcome line -- I'm hoping someone will find a clue for me on my LAWS North Carolina lines. Thanks! Nancy :-) Selim C. or (William C.) LAWS was born in North Carolina about 1816. He was a carpenter. His first name has been spelled as: Selim, Celem, Selam, William E., William C, and Bill. Cousins who are still living say he was called "Bill" at one point -- probably short for William? However, he is on TN census reports as Selam and Celem. We don't know who his parents were -- but there were several LAWS families living in North Carolina in the early 1800s. By 1850, there were many LAWS families in nearby Wilkes County and a few in Henderson and Yancy counties. I would think my Selim came from one of these LAWS families - being born about 1816 - then moving to Iredell County with his wife and family. There are two EXCELLENT clues we have about my LAWS family from an obituary of Robert Edwin LAWS (grandson of Selim) -- it said Robert descended from "revolutionary stock" -- meaning Selim's father or grandfather served in the Revolutionary War. I have a list from the DAR of LAWS men who served -- (please see the end of this e-mail for the list). Maybe one of these men is my Selim's Grandfather? Also, the obituary said William E. LAWS (Selim's son) was in the Confederate Army and died from wounds received at Gettysburg. Selim is listed on the Iredell County, NC census in 1850 as age 34, born in North Carolina. Would he be a son of one of the LAWS families in nearby Wilkes County? He is on the Claiborne County, Tennessee 1880 census as age 64, born in North Carolina. This means he was born about 1816 - in North Carolina, but knowing how census info can sometimes be off several years, I would use a range of 1810 to 1820 -- as his birth time. Does anyone have a male LAWS child in this age range in North Carolina during these years? He is found on the Iredell County, NC census in 1850, with wife Mary and five children, in the Sweet Home Post Office area. However, one of my cousins says at one time Selim and/or his family were in Brunswick, Iredell County (?), NC? (I have no written record of this.) One cousin says she thought she saw a Seli C. LAWS on the 1860 Iredell County census -- and a Salina LAWS -- but I don't know if these are my LAWS. The "SELI C." sounds like my Selim. If it is, he would be 44 years old. Sometime after the Civil War (1866-1868) Selim and his family moved to Tennessee -- Claiborne County or Union County. Selim married Mary E. or Mary EUBANKS about 1840 in North Carolina. Mary EUBANKS (Mary Elizabeth?) was born about 1824 in North Carolina. Possible ancestors of my Mary EUBANKS: There were two EUBANKS/EUBANK brothers - Richard and Thomas, who came to Maryland in the 1670s. At this point, I feel my Mary may come from Richard. Could this be my Mary EUBANKS line? 1. Richard EUBANKS b. England ca 1650-1660 m. Nancy ______ ...2. William EUBANKS b. Maryland ca 1695 m. Mary _______ ......3. William EUBANKS b. William sold land to John PATTERSON in 1808. William probably came from Maryland, as many families moved to Iredell County in the early 1800s, coming from Maryland. William left a will in Iredell County dated AUG 27, 1816. He named his wife Hester, a son William, and single daughters Barsheba and Sarah, and a married daughter Nancy EVANS. Iredell court books from the May term 1840 of court: "Ordered by the court that sheriff summons a jury of twelve good and lawful men to allot, lay off and assign to Sarah Holland, wife of Tilman Holland, one third part of the lands of William Eubanks her former husband." In the court book for two sessions earlier that this notation, that is, the November term 1839, there was this information: "Solomon Claywell appointed guardian of Eliza E. My G2Grandfather James Madison (Matt) Laws was born in 1809 in Boyle County, Kentucky, before the family eventually migrated to Indiana. We think James Madison's father and other ancestors were born in England. Best regards, Ralph Banks, Austin, Texas

    3. I have a record for Jeremiah Laws. On this record was written 2 other names - Welcome William and John. I'm sure Welcome was the father of Jeremiah but not sure as to where John places in all this. There was a Welcome William that married a Milly Lowe in Wilkes County NC but the age deal would'nt match up for Jeremiah. There is also a Welcome in the 1830 Carter County TN census that does match up and I'm beginning to think that the John listed on the record was the father of this Welcome and John was a brother to Welcome from Wilkes that married Milly. Any one have any thoughts on this? Welcome father of jeremiah susposedly married a Cassie Bunton but I can't find a marriage record on this.
