J.J. Johnson posted this information on another mailing list. I thought it was excellent information and was worthy of passing along to y'all.... J.J. Johnson Writes: Hello Kuzinz, To make your query work harder for you remember the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following things possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790's, late 1800's etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS SYSTEM: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember, many subscribers belong to multiple list servers. Some go through their mail looking at subject fields only. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it. Use it again about once a month, because new members join often. Also, you may use it on web sites that accept them. EXAMPLE: Here is an example of one of my standard querys. Look for the ingredients mentioned above. ---Begin Example--- FROM: [email protected] SUBJECT: JOHNSON, b.14Jul1914, Sevier County, AR MESSAGE: James Howard JOHNSON was born in DeQueen of Sevier County, AR on 14Jul1914. He married Treacy Blanch PENG in 1937 in AR. He was a musician and trick roper with a rodeo. Offspring are: Rosetta Lawanda, b1938, TN Anice Irene, b1943, TN James William, b1944, TN (This is me!) James Howard is my father; I haven't heard from him since 1954. At that time, he lived in Lamar, CO and had remarried to Helen ?? Since his name doesn't appear in the SSDI, I am working on the belief that he is still alive. ---End Example--- REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT...jj ---------------------------------------------- J.J. Johnson ([email protected]) http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4143 ----------------------------------------------
Just passing along some information from Rootsweb. Now might be a good time for you to consider becoming a Rootsweb sponsor or sending them a donation. They provide an incredible service to the genealogy world. Remember....all donations should be sent to Rootsweb directly - - NOT to listowners. Also, remember there is no pressure to donate.....the services and surname lists are free. >Resent-Date: Sun, 4 Jan 1998 22:37:17 -0800 (PST) >To: [email protected] >cc: "Dr. Brian Leverich" <[email protected]> >Reply-to: "Dr. Brian Leverich" <[email protected]> >Subject: Policy: RootsWeb Lists Are Free! >Date: Sun, 04 Jan 1998 22:21:52 -0800 >From: Brian Leverich <[email protected]> >Resent-From: [email protected] >X-Mailing-List: <[email protected]> archive/latest/30 >X-Loop: [email protected] >Precedence: list >Resent-Sender: [email protected] > > > >Hi all - > >Hundreds of listowners and users have now given us input on the >issues of whether listowners should be able to charge money or >request personal information as a prerequisite for participating in >a list, and Karen and I are now convinced that extreme behavior by >some listowners could affect the whole listowner and user community >by discouraging users from participating in any of our lists. > >Hence we'd like to formally announce policy that: > > RootsWeb Lists Are Free! > >Users should be able to subscribe to lists without being required to >pay money and without being required to provide personal information. > >While we are willing to let bygones be bygones, future violations >may result in a listowner being asked to relocate their lists to >another server. > > >IMPORTANT NOTES > >The foregoing policy does not apply to the few lists, for example >the HCPD-L list for the Hacker's Creek Pioneer Descendants >organization, that exist specifically for the members of an >established organization. I knew last year when this issue arose, I read the proposal on the FCC web site prior to writing my e-mail to them. When I read this recent post, I admit I did not check out their web site, but I have done so now and all I find is the original proposal and deadline for replies which was February 14, 1997 - not 1998. Therefore, I do not know if this issue is still alive or not. Sherry in Georgia Do you or any other researchers have any information on my great grandfather Reuben Laws b. 1842 in Georgia? Reuben immigrated to Parker Cty, Tx. He is listed in the 1860 Parker Cty. census along with his wife Sarah Caroline Sullivan Laws. His father-in-law, William Sullivan b. 1805 Georgia, had immigrated to Parker Cty. Tx. by 1845 as he had a child born in Parker Cty. Tx. in 1845. Appreciate any information you might have on Reuben or suggested research regarding the Georgia Laws family. I notice that according to Switchboard, there are several Reuben Laws' currently living in Georgia. Susan Laws Taber in Houston
