Alva Law died Monday Jan.19, 1998 in Floyd Co. Memorial Hospital, New Albany, Indiana. The funeral was held Jan. 22, at Pykes Funeral Home , Henryville Indiana. Alva lived in Henryville since 1933 when he was in the CCCcamp at the State Forestry there. He was retired from The Whayne Supply Co. Louisville Ky., and a VETERAN of World War 11. Surviors : His wife Edna Mae Enteman; a son Kenneth Law ; Henryville; a daughter, Wilma Buis, A brother Merril Law of Clarksville Indiana; three sisters Dorothy Rippey , of Aurora, Colorado; Mildred Owen, Corpus Christi, Texas; and Opal Harris of Tampa, Florida. and a Grandson, Joseph Law, of Henryville. For the genealogists, Alva was a descendant of John Law Sr. b1722 in Va. who furnished food and lodgings for the Revolutionary soldiers and three of his sons were in the Revolution. Next was JESSE Law b 1757 in Va, He is well known in the Revolutionary Was.history. and many of us have joined the SAR and DAR on his record with Service number 1688. Jesse married Mary Polly Willis and in our line there was William Joel Law b 1782 in Va. In 1799 they moved to Trimble County and Oldham County Ky. and about 1813 they moved to Jefferson County Indiana. I have found their original home stead and the old LAW Family Graveyard on the property. Jesse's brothers and sisters were John Jr;b1754; Henry b1759; Willis; Nathaniel; William; David; Burwell; For questions my Email is [email protected] Alva would have been 84 on Feb 18, 1998 and I, Meril, will be 82 on March 4, 1998. Thank you for adding me to the LAWS list! My mother and I are the official family tree searchers in our bunch! I love to research, and am looking forward to filling in the gaps on the LAWS side. My Gr-Gr Grandmother was Martha Elizabeth LAWS. She was born in New Tazewell (Claiborne County) Tennessee, 5/11/1868 and died 3/1941. Her father (as far as we know) was Salem C. LAWS (born about 1816...where??) and he married Mary EUBANKS (born about 1824...where??). Salem and Mary had six other children (all older than Martha Elizabeth)...Camelia LAWS, Susan Ruth LAWS, Mary LAWS, Laura I.C. LAWS, Widey C. LAWS, and John A. LAWS. We do know that my Gr-Gr Grandmother Martha Elizabeth LAWS was raised by two single "old maid" aunts. The story goes that Martha Elizabeth was left on the doorstep of these two aunts as a little baby. We have never been able to find out why...or the names of the two aunts. They raised her there in New Tazewell, Tennessee. Could it be her mother Mary died giving childbirth, as there were no other children after 1868...and she was about 44 years old at the time? And, her father..Salem C. Laws...was about 52...and had no way to care for a baby...we just don't know! We do know Martha Elizabeth grew up to be a fine young lady, and married William Fletcher KING there in New Tazewell. William Fletcher KING was called "Willie" by his family. We don't have very much on him, but know he was born 10/28/1865 and died 5/24/1902. We do know his father was David KING, a Presbyterian minister, and his family came from Virginia. Martha Elizabeth and William had two sons...Elard KING and (my Grandfather, Otis KING). The family moved to Ryan, Oklahoma, and that is where William died and is buried. Otis, my Grandfather, later moved to California (was in San Francisco during the great earthquake) and married, then moved to Texas. We would love to find out about the LAWS side of the family...especially about our Martha Elizabeth's father's family and those two aunts who raised her. Were they her mother's sisters? (Making them two old maid sisters with the last name of EUBANKS...) Or, were they sisters of Salem C. LAWS (last names of LAWS...never married...from Tennessee??) We will share what we have on the family so far...it is exciting to know we might find them after all these years! Thanks! Sincerely, Nancy Clayton :-)
My name is Charles Henderson and I live in Florence, SC, about an hour and a half from the beach, and I like that. I am researching mine and my wifes family and I have all of It complete for at least four generations. After that some lines get pretty thin. I have been researching for about twenty years, but not so actively for the last six or seven. That odd too because that is how long I have been retired. I guess I must not be really retired. The families I have gotten stuck on are the father and mother of Benjamin Henderson-husband of Phoebe McCurry. They lived in Henderson Co. NC and Benjamin was born in Va. Benjamin had a son, my ggrandfather who's wife was Adeline Patton. I have had trouble proving her parents although I have two good prospects. On my Mom's side, all the family came from Cleveland Co. NC, but before that from Rutherford, McDowel, and adjacent Co.'s. I would like to locate the parents of my gggrandad, Abel H Roberts who lived in Rutherfordton married Harriette Hyder. As of yet I have not located Harriette's parents either. Since I got on line I have found so many resources and so much help it has inspired me to spend more time than I should at the computer but it has been well worth the effort. I want to thank you guys for just being available and for letting me join your group. I have about 2500 persons in my data base plus another 3000 Ropers in a file I imported recently. If I can be of help to anyone please don't hesitate to ask. Sometimes it may be a couple of days before I will be able to answer. I go out of town quite frequently. The families in my data base are : Henderson, Davis, Roper, Patton, McCurry, Ledford, Roberts, Falls, Shirlen, Huffstetler, Hyder, Goforth, Hullender, Carpenter, Palmer, Hoffman, Skipwith, Rabon, Barfield, Branham, Kelly, Dowey, Peake, Bass, Henry. Most of it is contained in North and South Carolina.
