Dear Tony, I was going to write you today to tell you that I haven't gotten the GEDCOM that you were mailing me. I don't know if it was lost or if you haven't sent - now I see you are getting ready to whip out another one, but that it might be weeks. Could you please mail me the current one? Also, want to ask you.......... I am confused........ John Law b. 1723. He was married to Elizabeth LAWSON on 14 Nov 1748. What happened to Sarah Cockerham? > 3. Elizabeth LAWSON was born on 29 Sep 1733. John LAW and Elizabeth LAWSON had the following children: > > 1 i. Jesse LAW. > ii. Joell? LAW. > Are you saying John had 2 wives and that Jesse & Joel were sons of Elizabeth Lawson & not Sarah Cockerham? Please advise, Tony. Cousin Marilyn [email protected]

I am going to be posting some older Laws obits that a kind person sent to me. She recognized the LAWS name as she was looking through some obit archives at her local library. She knew that I usually request Laws obits from her when she indexes them for the GEN-OBIT mailing list. I hope some of these are helpful to someone. If you get a hit, please let me know and I will forward her e-mail address to you. I am sure it would make her feel good to know she helped! In a message dated 98-03-09 20:52:55 EST, you write: << To: [email protected] Please help,,,,my John's are getting confusing; Dear Lynn, Your note to the LAWS list was so cute! Perhaps now you know why I said in that note 30 minutes ago that I'd send out my gedcom file again in a few weeks when I have some things cleaned up. Your information "from several sources" may very well be a series of perpetuated errors which have been passed around. I think I can answer two problems right now. First, delete the Burwell middle name. It has not been proven to the satisfaction of the elder LAW genealogists. Second, Sr. and Jr. were added by others generations later. Now you have the problem of too many Johns with no distinction. Like someone told me a while back, our ancestors were not very creative when it came time to pass out given names. Hello, I am looking for any information on a LAWS who married a Thomas Cottingham(1732), who's father might have been Elijah Laws. And also a Mary Laws, who married Thomas's (1732) son Elijah Cottingham (1762). This would have all occured in Worcester or Somerset Counties Maryland. Bob Schulz (Cottingham List Owner)
Lynn, According to the Raney notes in Roanoke Library; John Born 1722 f source from Bristol parish Register John Jr born 1747 date of birth from pension application John lll born about 1772 from Census records. He very well could have ben married twice. Mr. Raney does not list any children for him. In colonial times Sr. sometimes meantthe oldest in that area bythat name. If there were cousins who had the smae given first name the tax lists sometimes referred to them as "son of". Just as today once the elded of one name pases away it wasthe practice for Jr. to become Sr. Hope that I ahven't confused you. Who sent you the middle name of Burwell for John born 1722? Did they lst a Source? Every bit of information helps. Susan
