Hello, and thanks to Wanda for the invitation to join and to all of you for the warm welcome! I'm John Lawes, living in Calgary, Alberta and I'm new at this genealogy business but enjoying it immensely. So far, with the help of a second cousin in England, (snail mail only,) I've determined that I'm descended from Thomas Lawes and Mary Ann Butler, who were married March 25, 1821 in Finsbury, St. Luke's, Old Street, London, England. Their three sons were William Herbert, Horatio Thomas and Henry James. Henry James Lawes married Harriet Maria Stratford January 9, 1853 in St. John Baptist, Hoxton and had ten children. The youngest of those was my grandfather, Charles Frederick, born April 4, 1874 at 242 Albany Road, Camberwell S.E., London where Henry James owned and operated a "Valentine Manufactory". I'm also researching my maternal ancestors (Cobbett) and have got back to circa 1790 - but I can't hold a candle to my wife, Louise, who is back to the early 1600's on both sides of her family! I look forward to participating with with the group. Cheers! John

Hello, Lynn; It all arrived just fine. Pasted into Corel and so far, it is 21 pages, Whew. It will take some time to absorbe it all, but thank you. Have you received any of your data from Tony WOODS? Previous to your message, I received 10 pages from him. Unreal, just a few weeks ago, all I had was two LAWS in my files. NOTE: Correction in the square brackets... BTW, in my files, I am calling all of them [[[LAWS not LAW]]] to keep down confusion. Hello and welcome, To G. LAW and others; Slight correction, I am not doing the research on Jesse LAWS. I am collecting the research done by others. And, I am very grateful for their hard work and sharing. I am fortunate to have several mailing lists and I never stop being amazed by the exchanging that goes on. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that until last month, I had the name of two LAWS in my data base, Amy LAWS m. Bluford Elisha DYER and William LAWS, her father. Thank you Wanda for this list. Because of you, I have 10 pages of LAWS relatives, 60 persons to the page. That is over 600 people. I am not trying to be cute, just don't want to sent inaccurate information out when some one contacts me. >> Here is a note from Roger Boardman to me (Tony Wood) which I have treasured since I received it. Basically, it states that we do not have all of the answers yet and that more documentation is important to make definitive judgements. Inaccurate information is not intentionally false, just untested and unproven. We can all try to find the answers, and some answers we will never know. The following is excerpted from an e-mail message from Roger Boardman on January 2-4, 1998. I think most everybody is in reasonable agreement with the information back to John Laws (b. 1722) and that his parents were William and Elizabeth Laws. (There is some confusion over the names of a couple of his descendants' wives, but that's minor.) I did have the information about a headright being claimed for William Law in 1677. As I understand the system, that did not necessarily mean he arrived in the colonies in 1677, just that the claim to the land (50 acres per person) for bringing him over was made. He could have arrived earlier. I also assume that you have the information from the Charles City County VA order book for 1687-95 that shows four entries for a Wm/Will Law(e)s between 1692 & 1694. This predates our earliest William Law as he served on jury duty and that generally wasn't a position for a young man. One reference was to "Wm Lawes and Mary, his wife." I'll attach a text version to this message, just in case you don't have this. People claim that William Law married Elizabeth "Lawson," yet I have never seen a reference that shows her last name or the logic that supports the supposition. Interestingly, I have two pages photocopied from a book which has no title on either page that shows a John Law married an Elizabeth Lawson on 14 Nov 1748, daughter of John Lawson and Frances. Maybe a case of mixed identity? I haven't ruled out William Law of 1677 as a direct connection. I was just pointing out that there were several LAW(E)(S) in the colonies prior to the records of the earliest that we can connect to. I believe it is possible that the William LAWES that was headrighted in 1677 could be the same man as shows up in the jury duties in the 1690s. It's just going to take more research. Right now, that is a leap of faith. I need to get back to the library and look up those references in Cavaliers and Pioneers, all 3 volumes, as that was e-mail someone sent me 4 years ago that I filed for future work that I never started. Recorded in Bristol Parish (Henrico, Dinwiddie, and Prince George Counties), Virginia, 1716-1734 (Parish Register) I hope this helps some. Tony Wood

Unreal, just a few weeks ago, all I had was two LAWS in my files. >> In the effort to maintain genealogical purity from this generation forth, it's WOOD not WOODS and LAW not LAWS on my lines. I still have to correct folks in my daily life about twice per week. As for the forthcoming gedcom to Susan and Marilyn, I am trying desperately to keep the information as correct as I can get it. Just tonight, Uncle Merril offered some corrections to the several Willis LAW listings which we have in the database, and identified some real problems with the information on William Joel LAW. I will get something out in the next few days here, but please....please, understand that this is an effort in progress and notable changes will be shared whenever new or corrected data is uncovered.
