H. G. Somerby did some fraudulent work on the Lawrence family, and Schuyler Lawrence repeated some of it, if memory serves me correctly. The 1869 Lawrence genealogy by John Lawrence repeats this fiction. However, others have told me that the American Lawrences covered in the book is accurate. For those descended from Thomas Lawrence & Joan Antrobus, the line [so far] is verified back to Thomas' parents, John Lawrence & Elizabeth Bull you'll often see the wife listed as "Margaret Roberts", but that has been disproved]. Professional genealogist David L. Greene is working on this family, and we all are eagerly awaiting publication [which will be in the NYGBR]. If I hear anything from Mr. Greene, I'll let everyone on the List know. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, March 29, 2002 10:14 PM Subject: [LAWRENCE-L] Lawrence hoax A while back, someone mentioned a hoax regarding an inheritance of the Lawrences of Ashton Hall, Lancashire. It has occurred to me that I did hear of a family tradition that my great-grandfather returned to England for an inheritance. He is supposed to have died while there and never returned to the US. I would appreciate it if someone could post the timeline of this hoax so I can see if it fits the time my great-grandfather went back to England. My grandfather, Charles Joseph Lawrence was born in 1879 so it would have to be after that.
