John Lawrence was named as a son of George Lawrence in his will dated 1847. A John Lawrence was listed in the 1821 Miller County Sheriff’s List. This could have been Adam Lawrence, Jr.’s son John, who was killed by Pawnees in 1826. A John Lawrence appeared on the Register of Families for Austin’s Colony. The date was probably 1832. John Lawrence (age 25) and his wife, Sally, entered the Register, with the note, “Canceled at the request of the interested parties and has returned his obligation.” A John Lawrence appeared on the 1837 tax list for Washington County, Arkansas. James Lawrence died in 1837. John Lawrence was appointed guardian of his brother James Lawrence’s children. Papers were filed in the estate in 1840 transferring guardianship away from John Lawrence. 1850 Arkansas Federal Census White R. Minor heirs Carrol Lawrence and Emily Lawrence were named. A. G. Cochran was named guardian on 2 Dec. 1866. [As reported in North Arkansas Times.] According to a Cane Hill, Arkansas Hughes family historian, the Lawrences were related to a Howard family. This connection was not defined. A marriage record exists between a William Howard and a Mary Lawrence in Washington County in 1858. Will abstracts for Independence County indicate a Mary Lawrence filed papers in probate court in 1858 in Independence County. Other records referenced include Elizabeth Lawrence (1861, Record C, pg. 392); John Lawrence (1853, Record B., Pg. 181); Mary Lawrence (1858, Record C, pg. 22); and Calvin (Collins?) Lawrence (1861, Record C, pg. 355. I'd be happy to correspond further about these families. Rebecca Hitzman rwhitzman@aol.com
