Surnames: Lawrence Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DAw.2ACIB/1111.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I am looking for my great grandmother's family but have no idea of their names. I know that her name was Tennessee Katinka Lawrence b. 1869 in Graves, KY, she married William Herman Venable in 1889 in Johnson County, IL. I have searched the census but can't find a Tennessee Lawrence born around 1869 in Mayfield, Graves Co, KY. I have found a Lawrence family for 1870 and 1880 but no Tennie, however, 1880 there is a Gilbert family a few houses down that has a little girl living in the house named Tennessee listed as other than direct relative. Tennie always said that her family were murdered and that her mother was raped during the ordeal and had her at a young age. How factual or details of such events are unknown. I have found where there was a connection between the Gilberts and the Lawrences around Mayfield back then. I also saw the post talking about Ada Gilbert who married a Lawrence. After they were married Tennie and Herman named their daughter Ada, she died as! a small child in Johnson CO, IL and is buried there near Tunnel Hill. I can't find any mention of Tennie as a child in any of the census and am trying to find out why. Her Obit said she was born and raised and always missed her childhood home in Mayfield KY though there is no records of her in the census that I can find. I was told by a relative recently that it is believed that her mother's name could have been Nancy Jane Lawrence also from Mayfield area and that her grandmother's name was possibly Elizabeth, but I can't seem to find much information on them. Also the name Tom Hall was the name that Tennie always gave as her father to family. Any help in finding any of Tennie's family back then is greatly appreciated. Sharon Blanchard

    3. Hello fellow Lawrence researcher: By any chance would your Henry from Vermont, have any connection with Joseph Lawrence and his wife Susannah ________who ended their lives in Vermont.....Joseph, we think before ? 1790 as his name does not appear on the census for that year. Susannah, may have married a Mr. Parmalee, and could have lived to 1800 or a bit beyond. In Vermont they lived for a time around South Hero. Many thanks..... 2. Leggetts and Lawrences were found in and around NYC in the 18th century and the families intermarried more than once. Among those marriages was that between Thomas Lawrence (1718-178), s/o Capt. Jonathan Lawrence and Mary Betts, and Eleanor Helena Leggett (1725-1797), d/o John Leggett and Anna Hunt, one of my 4G grandparents. > I believe the original Trinity Church burned down and I have >details in my files somewhere— Trinity's original building, a frame structure built not long after it's founding 1690's burned to the ground in the great fire in NYC in 1776 and many records were indeed lost. The surviving vital records, baptisms, marriages and burials, can all be accessed and serached at the parish's website (just google it to locate it) The current building was erected in 1746 by the architect Richard Upjohn. And, like most Church of England parishes its congregation and ministers were split between loyalists and rebels during the Revolution with most of the loyalists decamping for what are now the maritimes. 2. Richard, You and I have corresponded in the past re your Thomas Laurence, without resolving any connection between him and my Lawrences. I'm sure they are related by have no clue as to how. The information you related re my Thomas Lawrence (1753-1817) is information that I long ago drew from either our family resources of teased out of assorted documents and records in Rockland, Westchester, or Queens Counties in New York. But I'm left with many, many questions still. At least my Lawrence relations in the 18th and 17th centuries seemed to have used the names Thomas, John, Jonathan, and Samuel over and over again making for very confusing records. Just in my notes alone, I have 18 Thomases and similar numbers of Johns, Jonathans and Samuels. For some I have vital stats to distinguish them but for others I have little. None match your Thomas Laurence, husband of Eleanor Earle. So we're where be began some time ago. Good luck in your search. Kelvin Lawrence Kean

    2. Richard Clark I have been trying to locate John Lawrence who seems to have similar family naming patters and locations to the families mentioned including Thomas Lawrence. He was married Catherine Kane (Cain) (b. 1752) in Montgomery, Orange County, NY in 1773. He was a farmer and died in Orange/Ulster Counties 1800 -1812. He seems to have been quite literate and is seen several times serving in quasi legal positions. Have you come across a "John Lawrence" who fits into this profile? 3. Dear rgclark I see your response to a query re Lawrences dating back to mid-1700's On the off chance you may have information re the descendants of Robert Lawrence of Sandnwich 1640-1709 the immgrant from Englans......Married Sarah Barlow or Mary Phillips...... I am descended through this line....but have run into a brick wall. and wonder, if perhaps you can help me. Robert 1640- whose son, Joshua 1678- married twice, one being Elizabeth Swift They had 8 children and Ebenezer 1708-1707 who married Sarah Hammond of Rochester, Mass Their son JOSEPH 1737 - 1799? was a Rev Soldier.... Married Susannah ________ and their son Levi born 1766 in Atholl, Mass along with Sarah ( my ancestor) who married James Pelton, Nathan, John and another daughter whose name we do not know. We cannot find Susannah's surname..... There was also a son Hammond born 1761 but Susannah may or may not have been his mother. And there could have been other children - but these are the ones known to us. If you have any information on Joseph and/or his descendants, I would be most grateful if you would contact me. I have tried for YEARS to find out who Susannah may have been.... Joseph & family moved to Vermont during Rev and Levi, Hammond, Nathan, and Sarah all came north to what was then called Upper Canada, now Southern Ontario. Very much looking forward to hearing from you.
