James Lawrence (who made "don't give up the ship famous) I can't speak to the lineage of Capt. James Lawrence, but 'twasn't he who made the line famous. He is on record for having said while in command of the Chesapeake 1 June 1813 "Tell the men to fire faster and not to give up the ship; fight her till she sinks." However it was Oliver Hazard Perry who, while commanding the US fleet on Lake Erie in the summer of 1812 and after his own ship had been pounded by the British to a smoking hulk, hoisted his own dark blue flag emblazoned with the slogan "Don't give up the ship" and took the fight to the British, thrashing them soundly. >however >i've been told that our line is connected to capt. My mother was born a Lawrence in East Orange, New Jersey. She had many Lawrence great uncles, gg uncles, and ggg uncles, all of whom were born in northern New Jersey or Rockland County in the 19th and 18th centuries. Without more specifics as to date and place, neither I nor anyone else will have any idea if your Lawrence may be related. Can you give us more specifics? Kelvin Kean Elverson PA

My Lawrence Brick Wall Has Fallen! My great great grandfather Edwin Cady Lawrence, father of Emma Abigail LAWRENCE WARD was born in > Erie County, New York on 3 August 1831 to Morris W. Cady and Elizabeth Thomas. His mother died in 1837 when he was six. He was then adopted by Benjamin Lawrence and Roancy (nee Gowing) Lawrence and went to live with them on their farm in Pembroke, Genesee County, New York. His name was changed to Edwin L. Lawrence, and is listed as such in the 1850 census. Sometime before 1860 he married Abigail Hoyt of Batavia, Genesee County, New York and before she died in 1868 they had three children, Carrie E., Morris B., and Frederick E. In 1870 he married Eliza Reed and they had eight children: Emma Abigail, Edna, Hattie, Jennie, Dennis, Betty, Lee, and Fay. Emma Abigail married Benjamin Franklin Ward of Pembroke, Genesee County, New York. They had four children Clarence Lawrence, Howard F., Gladys, and Dorothy. Clarence Lawrence Ward is my grandfather. I have to thank the Historian of the town of Pembroke, Genesee County, New York, Lois Brockway for my break through in branch of the Lawrence Family. The Lawrence family is English and Edwin's mother (Elizabeth Thomas)is German. I also have obtained extensive information on the lineage of Benjamin Lawrence, but I no not know much about the Cady family, but thats another list. Thanks to all who sent me information, especially you, Jil, in the making of my first major break through. Joshua-Andrew Ward __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi, I am Joshua-Andrew Ward, one of the many descendents of Jehiel and Catherine Saxton, who moved to Darien, Genesee County, New York, Sometime in between Feb of 1859 and Dec of 1863 from Venice, in Cayuga County, NY. I put in between those times because in the William Ward one of there children is listed as being born in Venice, Cayuga, NY and the next sibling with a birth place listed says Darien, Genesee County, New York. You can view them and their children at this link: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rckline-wards&id=I9639 Their tenth child is the next in my line he is: Benjamin Franklin WARD Birth: 8 JUL 1866 in Darien, Genesee, New York Death: 23 AUG 1958 in National City, Los Angeles, California Burial: 26 AUG 1958 Greenwood Mem. Cem. San Diego, California Father: Jehiel WARD b: 18 OCT 1817 in Sterling, Cayuga County, New York Mother: Catherine SAXTON b: 1 SEP 1823 Marriage: Emma A. LAWRENCE b: 11 MAR 1871 in Pembroke, Genesee County, New York Married: 1 JAN 1891 in Corfu, Genesee County, New York Children 1. Clarence Lawrence WARD b: 19 SEP 1891 2. Howard F. WARD b: 3 NOV 1895 3. Gladys M. WARD b: 12 MAR 1897 4. Dorothy Adell WARD b: 10 JAN 1900 all born in Pembroke, Genesee County, New York He married Emma Abigail LAWRENCE who was born: 11 MAR 1871 in Pembroke, Genesee County, New York on 1 JAN 1891 in Corfu, Genesee County, New York. My research into the Lawrence family seems to be blocked or confused at this point. In the William Ward Genealogy book it says that Emma's father is Edwin Cady Lawrence and her Mother Eliza Perthena Reid. Since Emma was born in Pembroke, it stands to reason her parents were living there. One of the persons on this Lawrence list suggested that Edwin was the son of Samuel Lawrence and Thankful CADY. My research shows they had 6 children and none named Edwin. In the 1850 & 1860 census records for Pembroke, Genesee County, New York there is one Lawrence family. In 1850 Benjamin and Roancy (nee Gowing) and their son Edwin lived in Pembroke. In 1860 it showed another woman aged 21, Abigail (nee unknown to me)with the family. In 1850 Edwin was aged 18. In 1860 he was aged 29. It seems to me she is Edwin's wife and they may also be the parents of Edwin Cady Lawrence. Can any of you be of help to me? My great grandmothers Father is listed on page 539 of The William Ward Genealogy as 'Edwin Cady LAWRENCE'. A member of this list suggested that he might be a son of Samuel LAWRENCE & Thankful CADY. But my research shows: ID: I4563 Name: Thankful CADY Sex: F Birth: 12 NOV 1734 in Pomfret Center, CT Death: 27 OCT 1807 in Norwich, CT Father: James CADY b: 1 APR 1679 in Watertown MA Mother: Thankful HOW b: 22 JUN 1691 Marriage 1 Samuel LAWRENCE b: 5 JAN 1738/39 Married: 27 NOV 1766 in Norwich, CT Children 1. Betty LAWRENCE 2. Lydia LAWRENCE 3. David LAWRENCE 4. Thankful LAWRENCE 5. Samuel LAWRENCE 6. Solomon LAWRENCE b: 14 SEP 1767 Contact: Caryn Johnson <[email protected]> The list of children clearly shows no Edwin. The 1850 census for the Town of Pembrook, Genesee County, New York shows: Lawrence, Benjamin 50 M Farmer NH Lawrence, Roancy 46 F NH Lawrence, Edwin L. 18 M Farm Laborer NY and the 1860 for the Town of Pembrook, Genesee County, New York shows: Lawrence, Benjamin 60 M Gentleman New Hampshire Lawrence, Nancy 57 F New Hampshire Lawrence, Edwin 29 M Farmer New York Lawrence, Abigail 21 F New York The record clearly shows that Edwin is the son of Benjamin & Roancy/Nancy and SINCE Abigail is NOT listed in the 1850, she is NOT a daughter, but the WIFE of Edwin. Roancy/Nancy's maiden name is GOWING. Could Abigail's be CADY. Could she and Edwin be 'Edwin Cady Lawrence,s' parents? Since both my great grandmother Emma Abigail LAWRENCE WARD(B:1871) and my grandfather Clarence Lawrence WARD(B:1891) were both born in the Town of Pembrook, Genesee County, New York, could the Edwin and Abigail Lawrence listed in the census record be 'Edwin Cady LAWRENCE's' parents. Can anyone out there shed some light on this for me or at least head me in the right direction. This is my Lawrence Family BRICK WALL. His great-great grandfather was Ashley Lawrence. Ashley was born in 1806 in Massachusetts to David Lawrence and Sarah Ellis. When he was quite young the family moved to New York, in Onondaga County. His father David Lawrence died in 1815. David's brother Daniel Lawrence lived in Dalton, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and became guardian of the young children. About 1834 Ashley Lawrence married Orra Gilbert, probably in Onondaga County, New York. Some of their children were born in Onondaga County and some were born in Livingston County. Their children were Amorette Grace Lawrence (1835-1925 who married Lester Baker, Harriet M. Lawrence (1838- ) who married a Mr. Cook, Mortimer G. Lawrence (about 1841- , Amy Orra Lawrence (about 1842- ), and Elizabeth Emma Lawrence (about 1845- ). The siblings of Ashley Lawrence that were born in Massachusetts and approximate birthdates include Alfred (1797), John (1798), Harry (1800), Sarah (1803), and Elijah (1805). It is not known whether his brother David Sawyer Lawrence born in 1808 was born in Massachusetts or New York.
