    2. Good move, There should be a clear cut name, area, and time frame, if possible in the SUBJECT line. I delete the messages without this information. When there is almost a hundred each day, I don't look at them. Most of many are newsletters which take a lot of space and time.

    1. [LAWRENCE-L] Re names - NOT ROLL CALL
    2. Beryl Renton
    3. Hello fellow listers: Could I please suggest that instead of having the subject "ROLL CALL" everyone states exactly who they are looking for. I would like to see something like "JOHN LAWRENCE ENGLAND" etc. because most of the Lawrences seem to be in America. When you have ROLL CALL there are so many emails that it takes for ages to look and delete. At least if there is a name and area, we can delete before we open the message. Thank you for your time. Beryl Renton in Brisbane - looking for Cambridge, UK Lawrences as well as the Australian ones.

    1. [LAWRENCE-L] Effective Roll Call Postings
    2. Kelvin
    3. Beryl Renton makes a very good point regarding "roll call" efforts, one that serves the interest of all subscribers but, most importantly, serves the interest of the person posting the "roll call" notice. I would add too that many "roll call" posting contain too little information to draw any conclusions about any relationship between the poster's Lawrences and the reader's. Each posting should include in the header the information Beryl suggested, name (or names) and place, plus a year or a year range. For instance for several generations my Lawrence ancestors livedin Rockland County, New York. If I were to post a "roll call" for them the header would read as follows: Lawrence family (1700-1820); Rockland County, New York. Then in the body of the message I'd give essential information about them (three generations) that I know, first names (Jonathan, Thomas & Thomas), wives (Mary Betts, Eleanor Leggett, Sarah Fowler), exact dates and places of birth (Eastchester, Westchester County; Palisades and Tappan in Rockland County), children, and so forth. If I fail to do that I greatly reduce my chance of receiving a response, which would be unfortunate, because receiving a response is what a "roll call" is all about. It's a little like fishing. One needs to use the right kind of bait or there will be no nibbles, much less a "catch." Kelvin Lawrence Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania US
