Coates, Former Winnfield Citizen Victim Auto Accident A telegram was received Tuesday by H. C. Riser, telling of the death of his brother in law, D. B. Coates, in Los Angeles, California, as a result of an automobile accident at 8:30 p.m. Monday. The news was a distinct shock to Winnfield where for so many years Mr. Coates was one of the foremost citizens and his old friends regret his unfortunate and untimely death. When a very young man, David Benjamin Coates came to Winnfield and secured employment in the office of the Comrade, at that time owned by B. W. Bailey and later purchased by The Southern Sentinel. His clean cut and forceful editorials on the issues of that time marked him as a man of high intelligence and prophesied for him a successful career in the newspaper realm. Upon leaving Winnfield, Mr. Coates went to Longview, Texas where he operated successfully for a number of years when he sold this paper and purchased another in Forney, Texas. About five years ago he went to Los Angeles where he again engaged in newspaper work, continuing until his death last Monday. Mr. Coates is survived by his widow, who before her marriage was Miss Josie Magee, and nine children. They are Magee, who is married and lives in Los Angeles; Bennie, George, Iley, Josie, Clara Choice, Ella Belle, and James Ferguson. --------------28D4CBADE0C3C0A68C4515DB--
