OBITUARY: The Oak Ridger, Oak Ridge, TN March 22, 19999 JOHN L. HORTON, SR. Retired ORNL engineer John L[ee]. Horton, Sr., 76, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville. Mr. Horton was an engineer who retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Instrumentation and Controls Division in 1989. He came to Oak Ridge in 1944 after a short time working for General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. He was born in Winnfield, La., and graduated from Louisiana State University in 1944 with a degree in electrical engineering. He was the son of William Roderick Horton and Nettie Lillian Teagle Horton. His family said he was known among themselves and his friends for his keen mind and curiosity, as well as for taking an active and genuine interest in those around him. He had been very active in service to his church, First United Methodist Church, and to the Oak Ridge Lions Club, which he served as president. Mr. Horton enjoyed outdoor activities, including gardening, hunting, fishing and riding his all-terrain vehicle in the local mountains. He also enjoyed belonging to a bowling league with his wife, Jean Davis Horton, who survives him. In addition to his wife, Mr. Horton is survived by his children J[ohn]. Lee Horton, Jr. and his wife, Mary Frances, of Martinsburg, W. Va., Carol Ann Horton and her husband, Dean Dameron, of Littleton, Co., James W. Horton and his wife, Rebecca of Oak Ridge, and Thomas B. Horton of Ocean Ridge, Fla.; and his stepchildren, Michael C. Davis of Atlanta, Ga. and Cathy Davis Brown of Cherry Hill, N. J. He is also survived by his sister, Martile Horton McBride [Mrs. Curtis R.] of Columbus, Mont.; his brother, Edward Horton [and wife, Gloria DeLoach Horton] of Tulsa, Okla.; and his grandchildren, Jake[John Lee,III] Horton of Dayton, Ohio, Gabriel Horton of Des Plaines, Ill., J. Wesley Horton of Oak Ridge, Debra Dillard of White House, Tenn., and Susan Kuehn of Minneapolis, Minn; and by four great-grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews. Mr. Horton's first wife, Emale G[attis]. Horton, who was a teacher at Oak Ridge High School, died in 1985. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., March 23, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Henderlight officiating. He is also survived by brothers-in-law, W. D. (Debs) Simmons of Houston, TX., formerly of Winnfield, and Bill Gattis of Delhi, La., and sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Stovall Horton of Cincinnati, OH. Burial was in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Nieces and newphes attending the services were: R. Hugh Simmons, Paoli, PA.; Deanna Simmons Hess,and husband, Robert, Livingston, TX.; William R. Horton, III, Cincinnati, OH.; and Tommye Horton Anderson, and husband Ron, Pensacola, FL.
