This was on the listowners mailing list and also in the Alexandria Daily Town Talk. Please read what this listowner sent through his list. It about covers it. It seems this is NOT a hoax and is serious. (I don't use Word, I use Word Perfect 8 or MSWorks and hopefully I'm clean. But checking my files today. Suggest you do the same. JUST DON"T OPEN attachments <grin> Delete and dump your trash can! (PS: please don't respond to this message as it will just create more post. Just check your files and be careful what you download and/or open.) Annette list owner Hello to all list members. Listed in my newspaper this morning was information concerning a virus, the Melissa macro or W97M. This particular virus is spread through email *attachments* and appears to be spreading rapidly. The message received with the email to which the *attachment* is sent reads " Here is that document you asked for...don't show anyone else:-) " The *attachment* that accompanies this email message and which is inserted in your files is named " list.doc ". As I understand it, machines with Microsoft Word 97 or Word 2000 are targeted, but any mail handling system could experience performance problems or a denial of service as a result of the propagation of this macro virus. For more information please check the CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) URL <http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-99-04-Melissa-Macro-Virus.html> If you do receive the message and virus attachment, just delete the attachment "list.doc" from your machine without opening the file. Hope this message will prevent anyone's machine on the lists from becoming infected or from infecting others. Don [email protected]
