The next time im in Winn Parish I will locate this office. The grave of this Rayburn im looking for was a parolled convict from Kansas that came to Winnfield in 1925.On May 1st 1926 he shot and killed my grandfather (Deputy Sheriff) of Winn Parish Robert Elijah Boyett. The write up in the Enterprise tell's me that the body of John Rayburn was taken to Mr. Wiggins property for burial.(Maybe it was an paupers grave site). Jim are kin to any Taylors of Winn Parish? Do you have a Willie or William Taylor born abt. 1896 and married a Minerva Johnson born July 24, 1900.Or a James Edward Taylor born abt. 1917 and married to Julia Inez James?I have the names of all their children if it will help?Let me know. And again thank you so much for your reply.

My dad Cecil Taylor worked for them for many years and knew a lot who owned what in Winn Parish and what work had been done on the property. That information is in the SCS files. They have aerial maps of the areas. And SCS agents spend a lot of time in the woods doing surveys, running lines, and marking timber. They often run across old homesteads, grave sites and cemeteries. And they usually know the oldtimers and the history of much of the land. One cautionary note. Soil Conservation Districts are formed without regard to parish lines.

    3. Greetings: You should have read the minutes of the 10-13 meeting by now and I want to address you now concerning our organization, officers for 2002, etc. I have enjoyed serving this year as president. I consider it more of an honor than anything else and I appreciate the confidence you've seen fit to bestow upon me. We have had a successful year, none of which I can claim happened due to me or my serving as president. Annette Womack served the first several years as president and did a marvelous job. The torch was well lit when she passed it to me and because of that we managed to keep it burning for another 12 months. She, Sue Badeaux, and Peggy Beaubouef again did a wonderful job with our quarterly publication which I have always said is the reason we have the large membership we do. Peggy Beaubouef has done a wonderful job of having great programs at all meetings and put together a very informative and successful conference in September. Lenora Martin has out library in good shape. The Shell sisters, along with help from Barbara Moon and others, has made sure we had good food at each meeting. Dr. Paul Peters and Austin Abrams, with help from others, have done a wonderful job with our World War II Oral History Project, and we're still working on that. I assure you all that one day, after we're long gone, someone will be praising our efforts for having done this project. I am certainly proud of it thus far, and we realize we are not yet out of the woods with it. The organization is in good standing, we have a few bucks in the bank, we don't owe anyone, we have our own meeting place and a small library which continues to grow, so I don't have a problem in passing the gavel to someone else, which is what the subject of this email is about. Most of you know that I am the chief deputy for the Winn Parish Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Jordan has never once balked when I had work to do for our organization and he has supported us in many ways (advertising, inmate labor, etc.). As you might be aware, my job is a fairly busy one. Besides my responsibilities to the sheriff's office and to the people of Winn Parish, I have two daughters in college. Hence, I am teaching criminal justice classes at Northwestern State in Natchitoches two nights a week, from two to three seminars a month for L. S. U.-Shreveport (statewide), and also I teach periodically at the Alexandria Regional Police Academy. My plate is full. I am ready to relinquish the presidency in 2002 to anyone of you who are willing to accept the job. I can say that the organization is in good shape and with the membership we have and all the fine members who have come forward when asked to assist, it is not like I am leaping from a sinking ship and trying to get it out of my hands and into someone elses. In other words, whoever takes over will have a good organization to steer and good people within it to help. I certainly plan to continue being active in the organization and do whatever I can to help it along. I ask that you give consideration to accepting an officer's position next month for the 2002 year. Please try and come to the meeting November 10 and let's see that our organization continues on the proper path. Thanks, Gregg Davies

    1. [LAWINN-L] Minutes of October 13, 2001 Meeting of WPGHA
    2. Greggory E. Davies
    3. Good Evening, Here are the minutes of today's meeting. Minutes of Saturday, October 13, 2001 regular meeting of the Winn Genealogical and Historical Association. The meeting was called to order at 12:30 p.m. by President Gregg Davies. Due to the weather, only 13 members and two guests were present. Thanks was tendered to Dorothy and Doris Shell for their preparation of refreshments. Annette Womack agreed to act as treasurer for the remainder of 2001 and will accept the job for 2002. The financial report follows: $2190.15 savings $3307.67 checking Due to Peggy Beaubouef's absence (storm knocked out power in the Wattsville-Calvin area and Peggy had to move her mother to a secure location) we were unable to get a final report on the September Conference but Gregg noted that we had indeed ended the conference "in the black" and that all expenses had been paid. Discussion was held concerning the World War II Oral History Project and Gregg and Dr. J. Paul Peters, co-chairman with Austin Abrams, agreed to meet Monday and discuss continuation of the project. Approximately 60 veterans have been interviewed. Discussion was held regarding the purchase of more library materials such as microfilm, CD Roms, and it was agreed upon to purchase additional materials following an inventory of the L. D. S. Family History Center, the Winn Parish Library, and our holdings to determine what materials would not be duplicated with current holdings. Jo Branch and Ken Peavy are inventorying the holdings at the public library and Annette is inventorying holdings at the Family History Center holdings. Following these inventories, we will determine what to order procure. It was reported by librarian Lenora Martin that approximately 40 books were purchased recently from the Natchitoches Genealogical Society and had been catalogued and shelved in our library. Grady McFarland recommended an internet site: www.genealogy.com/user It was announced that nominations and elections for officers for 2002 will be held at the November meeting. To qualify for an office, one must have been a member for six months. To qualify for president, one must have served previously as an officer. Gregg announced that due to work demands, he was ready to pass the gavel to the next president. He also mentioned that Peggy Beaubouef has agreed to give up the vice-presidency and serve as editor in 2002, and that Annette Womack has agreed to serve as treasurer in 2002. It was also announced that one did not have to be a resident of Winn Parish to serve in any office. Dr. J. Paul Peters introduced Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Payne as guests. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

    3. I have noticed on several mailing lists I subscribe to that there is a company soliciting business and directs the reader to a particular site. This is not endorsed by the Winn Genealogy & Historical Association and I know the LAWINN list does not endorse it either. Please beware of such solicitations. There are those new to genealogy research or to subscription lists who might not know better. Thanks, Gregg Davies
