Junior's Aunt Vay told me that the bell was used to call people into town for emergencies. But, the business owners would ring it when business was slow. Of course, once folks were in town, they stayed to shop and visit. Note: The original bell tower was destroyed by a tornado, the one on top of City Hall today does not have a bell in it. Jo

Jo, thanks for getting this posted. I might add that this is the current Winnfield city hall located at the corner of Main and Beville Streets. As it has undergone some changes over the years, I think a tornado took part of it down in the 20s or 30s and the late, great Winn Parish historian, Mr. Harley B. Bozeman and Mr. Ovey Trahan and possibly others, went to Washington, D. C. against the wishes of Huey P. Long, and obtrined federal money to refurbish it. Huey had fallen out with F. D. R. and did not want the state to take any federal funding, hence his protest against the local contingent going to D. C. and asking. I was told that the Roosevelt Administration jumped at the chance to aid due to Huey's opposing the idea. If anyone can assist this lady, please do. Thanks, Gregg Hello; I've been trying to find out about my grandfathers history, his name was Charles Holmes (Billie) Wasson born 07/19/1880. His father was John Mills Wasson born 12/16/1832, mother was Sarah Elizabeth Holmes born 11/30/1837. They were married 11/01/1855 I think somewhere near or in Winn ph. La. My grandfather was the youngest of twelve children. The Bible record shows that all the siblings lived in Winn ph. La. In 1958, my grandfather died but before he died he made a confession to me when I was 19 0r 20, that would be in either 1957 or 1958. Now I'm a Senior citizen (63) and not in good health but am anxious to get to the truth before I cash in my chips. There has been so much secrecy among my grandfathers children and my grandmother that to get to the truth has been a confused journey. I see that you are not taking any more clients but if you could guide me to some websites that might reveal some things I would be very grateful. Thank You, Carole A. CCPLAY, I am looking for the names of the parents of a man named Bluch Haddox, probably born in the early 20th century. He married Maybelle Shelton in 1837 in Winn parish, LA. Is he in your Haddox line? Do you have any children for him? I'm so sorry that I haven't responded to you. You know I guess it's pure luck because in the back of my mind I kept thinking--I have to get back on the hunt and check my messages about my White...Wow! Thanks for sharing what you have with me. I will definitely get on it and do some more researching here. I know between the ones looking we can all pool our research together and get this mystery solved. At least more than one of us is working on it. I work better in the summer since I'm not teaching then so I usually do research when I'm off on Christmans holidays and such. Though with this info. I will certainly look in the wee hours of the night..ha!! Thanks for the info about the book too. Keep in touch..You know I live in Winnfield, (Winn Parish) and if I can do anything for any of you I certainly will be glad to. I am related to the Lucas', Gilmore's and Tarver's here. Thanks again! Gregg, What seems to be the problem, is all the "chat" we do off the list. I have only received the virus attachments from people I have corresponded with off list. My husband is a computer tech and I manage the network where I work - so we keep our virus software up to date - but some that I know, don't even have virus software or money to buy a good one. I received this yesterday from a cousin and thought I would pass it on for those who may not have a virus program. "go to www.pcpitstop.com <http://www.pcpitstop.com/> and do a virus scan. This is the company that writes pcworld magazine, it was referred by Tech TV. I used it once and had a virus that Norton missed. It will give you the name of the virus, type and what it will do to your computer. You can go to www.symantec.com <http://www.symantec.com/> and see it they have the removal tool for the virus." Good morning. Happy Holidays to all of you and may God continue to bless our nation as he has for so long. I got this information from another list I belong to and as I have had about 30 virus messages in the past week which through genealogy lists I am subscribe to, I feel certain many of you have had or will have the same problem. I realize this is not a genealogy topic and probably not proper for the list, but the bad viruses hitting now have come through the various rootsweb lists or through the emails of those subscribed to these lists. I have copied the following from one of those lists. I am not a computer guru so there is no need to ask me for advise. You would not want my advise as it would be bad. You might, however be sure that your anti-virus program is updated and be sure not to open any attachments from anyone whose name is not familiar. And I would be sure to check with anyone you do know who you receive attachments from before opening them. Please read the following and again a happy holiday to all of you. Gregg ************************** It seems that this new virus/worm has infected many of us on rootsweb. I have spent several days getting my computer cleaned up and I had a difficult time finding help in doing so. I think this new discussion group can be helpful if you need guidance. FYI. I've just subscribed. Good Luck! Wayne S. There was probably some relation there to the Roy Preuett in Heflin. My brother, Charles D. Preuett, has done quite a bit of research on our branch of the tree. I think he attended a Preuett reunion in the Heflin area about a year ago and could have gathered more information. Thanks again for your help.
