Jo
Hello Everyone I need a favor I just found out that my mothers cousin Lois Jordan Welch, who lived in Columbia, passed away 3 or 4 months ago. If anyone can find an obit and send to me I would appreciate it very much. Also my uncle Melvin Jordan passed away February 4 in Sabine Parish. Don't know if there was an obit for him there in Winn Parish or not. If so would appreciate a copy. Thank You Christine Neal ccplay@aol.com
Hi to all: Starting with the first issue of 2002, WPGHA will be including 4-6 pedigree charts. All current paid-up members in good standing may submit their charts to me at ACWOMACK@AOL.COM in GedCom format. Please include as many generations as you have, but at least 5-6. The charts will be used in the order received. All the charts will be printed in the same format using the same program. Please include your name and address in "the message telling me you have attached a GedCom copy of your lineage for inclusion in the journal." This message will be your permission for us to print it. Without this message, I will not even open your attachment! Thanks Annette

One of his daughters, Catherine Elizabeth Timmerman married James Ellis Anderson and moved to LA and his other daughter Martha Ann Rebecca Timmerman married David Franklin Averett and they were on the way to Texas when they stopped to visit Catherine and stayed. Frederick came to La after the death of his wife to be with the daughters, since all of his sons had already died. Would like more info on the burial, Name of Cemetery, etc. Thanks, Connie

Patty, I think Mrs. Schumpert (Barnes) Jones can help you as she is a descendant of the late, great Dr. Hasson Barnes who was a Winn Parish sports hero, later played quarterback at Tulane, and whose grandsons were the great Bert Jones who was All-American at LSU, All-Pro, and I think MVP in the National Football League with the Baltimore Colts; Tom Jones who played QB at the U. of Arkansas, and Ben Jones who was also a great LSU player. Her other son Bill is currently a state senator and she married Dub Jones, also an all-pro football player. Charles "Hoss" Newman Posted on January 22, 2002 BENTON, LA - Services for Coach Charles B. Newman, 80, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton, Louisiana. Officiating will be the Reverend Rolly Walker. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Memorial Park. Coach Newman died Monday, January 21, 2002 in Bossier City after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Ponchatoula and had lived the last thirty-five years in Benton. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Billie Newman; three daughters, Sandra Dyson and husband Don of Ruston, Jody Struckmeyer and husband David of Dallas, Texas, and Renee Ryan and husband Robert of Benton; eight grandchildren, Darrell Dyson, Brian Dyson, Laura Causey, Suzanne Dyson, Nancy Padial, Joseph Johnson, B. J. Ryan, and Brad Ryan; six great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Abigail Dyson, Cameron Causey, and Victoria, Daniel, and Michael Padial. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II and a 1948 graduate of Louisiana Tech. Coach Newman coached and taught high school for 33 years from 1949-1982 at Lake Providence, Winnfield, Benton, and Trinity Heights. His high school coaching record was 202-127-7. Prior to his coaching and teaching career, he was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1948 but an injury forced him out of professional football. In 1995 Coach Newman was inducted into the Louisiana Tech Athletic Hall of Fame both as a player and coach. He was selected as a member of the all-century football team at Louisiana Tech last year. He was also a member of the national association of grandstand quarterbacks which is composed of his college football teammates from the 1940's at Tech. Although his generation knew him as "Hoss", two other generations knew him only as "coach". One well-respected sportswriter wrote after his retirement, "he was one of the last of a vanishing breed of coaches who was a throwback to the days when giants walked the sidelines and stood tall among crewcut boys. He left the fancy formation to the younger coaches. He knew that blocking and tackling won games and always lined his teams up in a full-house backfield. The other teams knew what he was going to run, but if you weren't fully prepared, he would give you an old-fashioned country whipping." Pallbearers will be Darrell Dyson, Brian Dyson, Joseph Johnson, B. J. Ryan, Brad Ryan, and Carlos Padial. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Benton High School, Benton. Louisiana, 71006, or a favorite charity.Hill Crest Funeral Home
