Others there in Winn Parish, and particularly the many Gaar descendants, could handle this query much better than I can. I do know that one of the more extensive chartings of Winn Parish families is the book on the Gaar genealogy. I ran across it in the Winnfield public library a few summers ago. It was written many years ago, and then was updated in more recent years to reflect later generations of Gaars. I quickly found my Payne great uncles who married Winn Parish Gaars. Perhaps others will be able to give you more details on the Gaar genealogy book -- if you haven't checked it already. --- Steve At 10:14 AM 4/3/02 -0700, Hairrfamily@cs.com wrote: >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Surnames: Gaar >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mEB.2ACI/460 > >Message Board Post: > >I am looking for Gaar family information. Good evening. Mr. Frank Martin "worked" and compiled the Garden of Memories Cemetery just west of Winnfield several years ago. He has donated his work to WPGHA and Peggy has the 1990 version which she is about to give to me. My plan is to take Mr. Frank's list, go out there and update it, then we can post it on the archives site. Please let me know if anyone is working it, if so, I'll bail; if not, I'll try to get this done ASAP. Thanks, Gregg

They are James Pearre (Perry) and Elizabeth - Still need to track down her maiden name. For those who may be related and were seeking the same information, here is what I have based on the 1850 Federal Census for Noxubee County, Mississippi: Living in household 741: James Perry, 55, m, planter, born in GA, real estate valued at $2160 Elizabeth, 45, f, GA John, 21,m,GA Amanda, 20, f., GA Alexander, 15, m, MS Lucy Ann, 12, f, MS James, 10, m, MS Major, 8, m, MS I knew about Alex, Lucy Ann, James D. and Major T., but I didn't know about Alex's other siblings or who his parents were. Note: The given census listed the surname as Perry, but later census data listed them as Pearre. Based on the birth places of the family members, I would estimate that the family moved from Columbia County, Georgia to Noxubee County, Mississippi between 1830-1835.

The location of and rememberance of our long gone ancestors' graves is so critical, and the grandmas and aunts who used to know how to find the cemeteries won't be here forever. I've been on a search for three gr and gr gr grandmas buried somewhere in LA for 30+ years, and your maps would have been such a help for me. Unfortunately, I can't give you names or locations of Winn cemeteries (I'm in TX), but want to thank you for your kind assistance to all the family researchers who are still looking!!

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mEB.2ACI/455 Message Board Post: I want to call your attention to a new free (no advertising) volunteer-based resource for on-line genealogy. The US GeoGen Project combines the use of geographic information systems (hand-held GIS locator devices) and genealogy to assist researchers to find site of interest. The first places to be added to the on-line database are cemeteries. I volunteered to coordinate the process of establishing sites for Louisiana parishes. (I grew up in Acadia Parish and much of my research is done in Southwest Louisiana.) http://www.geogen-LA.com I have recently updated the Winn Parish cemetery page and would like your help to assure its accuracy and completeness. I would like your help to gather the names and locations of the cemeteries that aren't listed and to gather the latitude and longitude of the cemeteries that are listed but are missing GIS coordinates. Even if you can't provide the location, it would be very helpful if you could provide me with the names of cemeteries that are not on my list. I'm involved in this project because of a frustrating experience I had several years ago. I spent several days on two separate trips to Louisiana trying to find an old cemetery. No one I asked had ever heard about it. Although I eventually found it (known by a different name) and found a grave marker for my ancestor, I've never forgotten the frustration at knowing the general vicinity but not the exact place to look. With the low cost of GIS devices it is possible to directly go anywhere if there is proper information posted about location. (Wal-Mart sells very good ones for less than $125 -- I recommend the Garmin brand models because of their ease of use, reliability, accuracy, and ability to give the exact same reading if you go back to the exact same spot the next day.) It is even possible to provide the exact location of a grave within a cemetery to an accuracy of 15 to 20 feet. Please look at what I've done with Acadia Parish to see what is possible. I have the exact locations of some cemeteries and I'll have the locations of the other Acadia Parish sites listed soon. From each cemetery with a known exact location you may click on the blue icon to get a map showing the exact spot. Also, I have links to a page by the local genealogy society to get more information or to order books of grave marker transcriptions. There are other possibilities for linking to local groups. Let me know what you think, David Lawrence
