First Fatality In 5 Year History, Municipal Pool Funeral services for Billy Overbey, 16 year old high school student who drowned Wednesday afternoon in the Tremont Park swimming pool, were held at the First Baptist Church today (Thursday) at 3:00 p.m. The rites conducted by the Rev. W. L. Holcomb, pastor, were followed by interment in the Winnfield Cemetery. Young Overbey, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Overbey, considered a good swimmer, is the first fatality in the five year history of the municipal pool. One of a large crowd of swimmers in the pool Wednesday afternoon, he is believed to have sustained a head injury in some manner that led to drowning. When his body was pulled from the pool in about 10 feet of water around 5:50 p.m. by Herbert Garrard, a life guard, a slight abrasion was found on his forehand just above the right eye. The body was spotted by another swimmer who notified guard Garrard. Dr. George M. Rodgers, deputy parish coroner, was called and a pullmotor was used along with artificial respiration for more than an hour in efforts to revive the boy. Dr. Rodgers pronounced it accidental drowning. Just how long the body remained at the bottom of the pool could not be determined even though scores of swimmers thronged nearby. Three lifeguards were on duty at the time, none of whom saw anything unusual at the time of the drowning. Young Overbey, who would have graduated from high school next year, is the second son of Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Overbey to drown. The first was their oldest child, a son four years old, who while playing, fell into a small pool of water in Miami, Florida, in February, 1940. Beside his parents he is survived by two younger sisters, Lynda and Sarah, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ellen Sowers of Winnfield; two paternal uncles, O. Z. Overbey, Bunkie, Durr Overbey, North Dakota; two paternal aunts, Miss Dot Overbey, El Paso, Texas, and Mrs. Lucille Knofle, Black Mountain, N. C. Pallbearers were Max Crowe, Bill Davis, Stanley Smith, Leo Shelton, Robert Franks, and Billy Ray Rockett of Jonesboro. --------------2DFEA6870641FC0A592906EC--

She knew everyone! She is grand-daughter of Laura C. PEDDY (b.1848) sister to my great-grandmother Mary C. PEDDY (b.1850) who married Hugh WARREN (b.1847). Hardtner, one of Louisiana's outstanding lumbermen, who died in a Shreveport hospital on August 21 after a long illness. Rites were held in the St. James Episcopal Church in Alexandria. Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery in Pineville, with the Rev. Tracy Lamar, pastor of the St. James Episcopal Church, officiating. Hardtner, president of the Urania Lumber Company, Ltd., of Urania, La., was regarded as the leading exponent of timber management in Louisiana and the South. He was a pioneer in the field of reforestation, although he was once considered a crackpot by those without enough foresight to realize that his ideas were sound. In addition to the presidency of the lumber company, Hardtner was chairman of the board of the Security National Bank in Alexandria; vice president of the Hardtner Lumber and Supply Company of Shreveport, past president of the Southern Pine Association, a 33rd Degree Mason, and Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana. The Urania Lumber Company was organized by the late Henry E. Hardtner and E. J. Hardtner, brother and father, respectively, of Hardtner. "Quincy," as he was known to his many friends, had been in failing health for many years. He had undergone treatment at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and at the Oschner's Clinic in New Orleans. He was transferred to the Shreveport hospital two weeks before his death. He died at 6 p.m. on August 21. Mr. Hardtner was married to the former May Tannehill, sister of Mrs. R. S. Walsh of Winnfield, and a half-sister of Estelle Tannehill, also of Winnfield. Survivors of the deceased include his widow, one son, Q. T. Hardtner, Jr., of Shreveport; one daughter, Mrs. Ernestine Hickman of Colfax, and four grandchildren, Q. T. Hardtner III, Ann Hardtner, Mary Jane Hardtner, and Quinton Hardtner Hart. Pallbearers were six nephews, Joe James, Henry James, Aubrey White, James White, George Tannehill, formerly of Winnfield, and David Crockett. Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Alexandria will be in charge of the arrangements there. --------------0C154F091ED49066D036F78A--
