Greetings: When I got to our new home this morning at 8:50, Mr. Hardy Beaubouef and Sheriff's Jordan's inmate crew had the major problem we faced tended to. The big wall that stood between the two rooms was removed and piled up outside. No longer a problem. Chris, if you will keep a list as we go of those who need appreciation sent their way, I would appreciate it. Please add Mayor Deano Thornton to the list as he assured me the city would haul off our mess that we are leaving on the street. Normally, arrangements for commercial type stuff have to be made and paid for. I think we will get by without any cost. Also, he and the City of Winnfield are one of our advertisers in the quarterly. It is sure nice when local politicians lend their support. So, if we are keeping a list, we need to thank Sheriff Jordan, Mayor Thornton, and Edward "Cabbage" Hamilton and the Winn Parish Police Jury, Dorman Guilliams, and those donating. Also, those donating their time such as Hardy Beaubouef. Annette and Roy came by to look things over and both were impressed. Roy will see if the desk he wants to donate will fit. Believe me, this place is going to be nice and we will all be proud of it. My only scare is that one day it won't be big enough. Thanks to Jimmy Cooley for the nice donation received in this morning's mail. I had hoped that we would be in business by the April meeting but we might not be quite there yet. Maybe with a little luck...... Gregg -- Greggory E. Davies 120 Ted Price Lane Winnfield, LA 71483 [email protected]
Mr. Hardy Beaubouef was hard at it today knocking out the wall in order to enlarge the corner and south rooms into one. Sheriff James E. "Buddy" Jordan, not a member, but an advertiser in our quarterly and my boss, gracioiusly agreed to allow some trustys to assist Mr. Beaubouef Saturday. Hats off to Sheriff Jordan, and if you are keeping a list, Mrs. Verrett, would you add him to it for a thank you letter? Possibly we jumped the gun on having our own restrooms. After much thought on a very important subject, we agreed today that it would be a huge risk to try and use the existing drains due to the fact that we don't know if they are still connected. The drains are not plugged off and there is no evidence they are workable. This would cause major problems should we use them and end up pouring sewerage all over the ground floor offices. We don't want to become unwelcome right off the bat nor do we want to become liable for damages. Besides, it is a short trot down the hall fifty feet. -- Greggory E. Mr. Hardy Beaubouef graciously met with Dorman Guilliams and I today at the new home. He will begin doing some work over the next few days. We might be able to salvage one of the restrooms after all. Hardy and Dorman agree that this is possible. It is small so I might still have to go down the hall if it's alright with you all. Dorman completed some of the lighting work today as well as locks, doorknobs, etc. We are having a problem making keys work on the outside entrances. I made 5 trips today to the keymaker and we finally got two to work. No one can figure out the problem. Ordered a sign for the entrance to our office. Lane Capps will meet with me in a day or so for an exterior sign. Moving forward. Gregg - Greggory E. Davies 120 Ted Price Lane Winnfield, LA 71483 [email protected]
Hi everyone: All the state archive file managers were notified yesterday that Edie who did several parishes including Catahoula had to resign due to "life/job/etc" overload. Being the glutton for punishment that I am, I immediately took on Catahoula Parish. If anyone is interested, several are still open... as is the two I am doing (East & West Carroll) Pray for me <grin> give me a couple of weeks to get over tax season and then put me to work by sending stuff, especially pre-1852 information for all us Winn Parish residents. NOTE: To those that don't remember, the east side of Winn Parish was carved from Catahoula. Annette

Greetings: Thanks to Mike Drewett and Karen Moss we have monetary contributions toward the new home project. I secured keys to the main building upstairs entrances and we can enter from the east side next to the Winn Parish Library as well as the south side behind the main building. The south entrance stairwell is wider and safer. The east stairwell is more of a fire escape and not too safe. Roy Johnson has donated a desk. Hardy Beaubouef is to get with me regarding some carpenter work. Dorman Guilliams, not a member, but my dear friend and protege at the courthouse, is picking up locks, light fixtures, and some other misc. items today. Also, the sink in what we hope to be part of the larger room when renovated is functionable, so I hope to get us a small bar/shelf/sink area which we will need for tending to refreshments, etc. If we are able to knock down the wall between the large room and the adjoining smaller room, we will have a problem in piecing the carpet back together. I spoke with Mr. Quincy Carter, not a member, and he will see about fixing that up for us, little or no charge. I plan to get us a sign made for the exterior of the building directing all to the second floor, plus signs for the doors to our office and meeting room. Thanks to those of you who have donated so far and to those who will. As we are non-profit, legit, etc., donations should be tax deductible. Anyone having ideas speak up. Thanks, Gregg - Greggory E. How exciting! My check for $25 is in the mail today. It will be nice to be able to see our library contents all in one place. Keep us posted on the renovations and cleanup. Karen Moss

Greg, I pledge fifty dollars in answer to your plea for funds to renovate and furnish the new home for WPGHA, although I'd hoped for something with a fire place in the front room. But what the heck, the check will be in the mail tomorrow, and I hope to visit this fine place in the coming year. Greetings: The Winn Parish Police Jury voted unanimously tonight to furnish a permanent residence to house the Winn Parish Genealogical & Historical Association in the Winn Parish Health Unit (old Martin's Hospital) Last week, Juror Edward "Cabbage" Hamilton and I went to the Health Unit and Mrs. Inez Anyan, director, gave us a tour of the available space. Mrs. Anyan was more than accomodating and welcomed us to locate in the Unit. Juror Hamilton handled the motion for us tonight at the jury meeting. (A letter of appreciation rom our organization to him and the rest of the jury would be in order-Chris or Annette, don't you agree?). I will attempt to obtain a key tomorrow and begin hustling materials, etc., needed to get the space ready to use. Also, I plan to get locks on the respective rooms as soon as possible for various reasons, first, because I am stingy and don't want to fight with anyone who might try and grab this steal from us, and second, I hope to begin amassing some materials for needed work on the rooms. Now, for some info concerning all this. The main drawback I forsee is that the rooms are on the second floor, and the elevator in the building does not work. Our access will be from the outside stairway on the south side of the building, nearest Church Street, or the east side of the building. There is plenty of parking in the alley between the Health Unit and the Citgo U-Pak-It, as well as parking beside and around the building. For those of you on the lists not familiar with where we are talking about, the Health Unit is next door to the Winn Parish Library and across the street from the First United Methodist Church. Secondly, the rooms are in pretty good shape. The carpet appears to be fine, and the walls are painted nicely. I am not sure these rooms have ever been used. However, some renovations be necessary, and will entail getting rid of some non-functioning sinks in a couple of the rooms. We have a total of three rooms, all next to one another. The largest room, a corner room, is in the middle. I propose knocking out a wall between it and the adjoining room that does not have a bathroom between the two, enabling us to have a large room for meeting. Remember, these are old hospital rooms. Also, the hall outside is big enough to sit folks in an assembly in the event we ever need to. As our meetings are on Saturdays, we will not have much worry about sharing the building at any time with any other groups, etc. The other room could not be connected to the other two without major cost. A shower, commode and sink are in the way and major bucks will be necessary to undertake such a renovation. I propose to use that "other" room as our "office" and library. At present, I see no way to maintain any type kitchen facility due to the cost of renovation. We'll have to make do. I will have someone with more sense than I, and that could be most anyone, to talke a look and see if it would be feasible and without a lot of trouble to put a small bar or sink in the place. We are dealing with old plumbing, etc., and we don't want to be the one to cause a leak on those below us. I wouldn't want to get kicked out before we get kicked in. A public restroom facility is down the hall. It ain't the best one that's come down the pike but those of us raised in olden days are familiar with outhouses. This one is is better than an outhouse. Don't be disappointed. Now, I have probably left out something, but don't want to leave out the most important part. As we have begun accumulating quite a library and certain equipment, and hopefully we will continue to do so, we must begin making preparations to get this space in order. That will require some funding. At the last monthly meeting, we voted to spend from our small reserve whatever we could afford, toward this project, if the police jury passed on it. They have and we now must begin whatever we are going to do. We might possibly need more money than we have to get this space in the condition it needs to be. Bookshelves, furniture (desk, tables, we have 20 nice chairs we have already bought, which will not be enough) and lighting (the other drawback I forgot to mention-the lighting is terrible and non-existent in one or two of the rooms so we need some flourescent[?] fixtures) are all needed and I am making a personal plea to those of you who can afford and wish to do so, to please make any contributions to this effort. I do not propose to lavishly furnish this new home of ours as Donald Trump or Bill Gates might. I pledge that I will not be extravagant, but, I won't this home of ours to be presentable. We are fortunate to get it. We now have a permanent home, rent and utility free so I say we should proudly make it presentable and usable. What we thought a year ago to be a dream is now a reality and we should take full advantage of it. I would like to hear feedback from everyone in the association and maybe some of you have some ideas that would be of help. I know I don't have all the answers. I do plan to get as much as of the material, labor, etc., donated. I don't think we will run into a huge expense, but, some expense none the less. Thanks for indulging. Comments or curses?
