    3. Hi, I've just loaded an interesting biography that was actually submitted to the Lincoln Parish Archives but as it pertained to Winn also, I loaded it to both ... the "Family History & Remembrances of Arthur Osban Jones" submitted by Calvin B. Jones of Farmerville. This bio goes into the early family history and move from Meridian, MS to Baton Rouge, Harrisonburg, then on to Gaars Mill in Winn Parish (where Arthur O. Jones was born), Melrose in Natchitoches Parish, back to Atlanta in Winn Parish, then finally on to Lincoln Parish. Surnames mentioned and connections discussed in addition to JONES are COLVIN, BLACKMAN, MASTERS, WRIGHT, HALLMARK, DRUITT, SUTTON, CARGAL/CARGIL, CHOATE, FOGLE, DYE, ALEXANDER, DAVIDSON, MAYO, MCDUFFY, & BROWN. Also, the following obits have been submitted and added to the Winn Archives courtesy of Yvonne Jones of Baton Rouge, formerly of Winnfield. Thanks Yvonne! Bertie Lee Shows Deen J.W. Shows J.M. 3. First of all, thanks to Mr. Tommy Harrel, Jr., Winn Parish School Board member and VP at the Bank of Winnfield & Trust Co. for a nice donation today. Sue, if you will, when this is over, please get with Annette on who has made donations, no amount necessary, and those who have helped, so we can put their names in the next quarterly. Thanks. Also, if Chris will send these folks a little thank you card, it would be nice. Thanks to you as well. The blinds are up! All I see left to do is get the carpet strip down, and Quincy Carter came today and prepped the are for this. Billy Zimmerman has one small electrical detail to complete and we are in business. Between now and the May meeting, which I assume we will have at the new site, I hope to have a couple of tables. Annette, we need to figure out when to begin moving the room full of books, etc., to the library. Also, I need to get with you and give you the keys. We can do that Sat. We need to begin thinking of indicentals such as a pencil sharpener, additional chairs (Sam's in Alex has about 5 or 10 in stock as of last weekend), filing cabinet(s), etc. I suppose we can take an inventory Sat. after the tour and begin working on this. I know of some sources for possible confiscations of older stuff that might be donated. I propose we take a tour right after the business meeting Sat., before the guest speaker, but you who know the agenda, etc. will have to decide. I am on my way to another meeting and must close. Thanks to those of you who have helped so far and to those who will in the future. The light at the end of the tunnel is getting very bright. Gregg

    1. [LAWINN-L] Update
    2. Greggory E. Davies
    3. Well, not much new. I learned from Annette that Mr. and Mrs. Billy Till made a nice donation today and we thank them. I think I mentioned Judge and Mrs. Hiram Wright in a previous update but not sure, but we again thank the Judge and Mrs. Wright. Today, the mail slots were placed in the door, and all the painting is done, I think. About all we are awaiting is the carpet strip and blinds. Our chairs have been moved from the library to the new headquarters. Locks are in place on the storage areas to keep our valuables/equipment. We will end up needing about 10 more chairs, eventually, maybe more. Also, we need a couple of the nice fold out tables. When I have time, we will get Roy Johnson's desk moved in and then we will see where we stand. In the event there are those out there that are getting an income tax refund, or if any of you have hit the lottery, or if any of you happen upon a few bucks lying in the middle of the street, we can use a tad extra to complete the furnishings. I really don't mind asking, but, I hope that I have not offended anyone by doing so. We do want a first class operation. I truly appreciate those who have helped. It makes one feel good knowning that there are those out there who have confidence in what we are doing. Merry Christmas. Gregg

    1. [LAWINN-L] Update
    2. Greggory E. Davies
    3. Greetings: As of this evening, we are awaiting window blinds and a strip of carpet, which should be here this week and hopefully installed. Trustys are putting the finishing touches of paint on the trim and moulding. A few odds and ends and we will be through. I spoke with Mrs. Mary Doherty, Winn Parish Librarian, and advised her we would pick the chairs up this week. I am still working on a couple of tables and maybe a bench or two. Thanks to Judge and Mrs. Hiram Wright for a nice donation received today. More before week's end, I hope. Hopefully by Saturday we should be ready for a tour, if anyone is interested. GED

As Sue Badeaux (the editor) is spending this week (and most of next) in Winnfield, I am letting you know. Sue's 92/3 year old aunt Ester, widow of Harrison Long, fell on Sunday night and spent the night on the floor where she was found the next day by her health care nurse. She is better but will need some rehab. Sue lives in Plaqumine and drives up every month to the meetings and to take care of Aunt Ester's business and shopping, etc. Later Annette

    1. [LAWINN-L] Great News
    2. Greggory E. Davies
    3. First of all the great news. Denton Shell came by today NOT with a $500 check as the historical committee had agreed upon but he did bring a check for $1000 as the committee agreed that this would be more appropriate. Thanks to Denton, Dennis, and the Misses Shell for their aid and understanding. Hardy drove his last nail today as he completed all the carpentry work. A big thanks to him for having donated his time and good work. Believe me, he saved us several hundred bucks and did one fine job. As I left this evening, Scott Zimmerman was wiring in the kitchen area. We are about to get down to the wire, so to speak. One more light fixture, staining and varnishing by the inmates, clean up, and we will be in business. By the way, got us a refrigerator, microwave, and can opener today and some other odds and ends we will need. Once the place is complete and clean, we will get our chairs from the library and hopefully a couple of tables I have scoped out at another location and we should be in business. Blinds for the window and the piece of carpet to "piece" together where the wall came down are ordered. No promises, but with some luck and timing, we might be able to have our first meeting at our new home in April. I hesitate to say for certain as I don't want us to move in until the job is complete. First, it's bad luck and second, we will never finish the job if we hang the first sock. So, there you are. We are on the downstretch and things are looking good. If nothing else, we can take a tour at the April meeting if we are not moved in . Keep those cards and letters coming in and donations as well. We are about to budget on the project. However, we are about through with the major costs. Gregg -- Greggory E. Davies 120 Ted Price Lane Winnfield, LA 71483 [email protected]

From: August 14, 1947 Winn Parish Enterprise Former Ward 5 Resident Slain Tuesday in Texas Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for Kieffer C. Doxey, 50, of Houston, Texas, at the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Montgomery, La. Mr. Doxey, a former resident of Ward Five, and son of the late Justice of the Peace J. T. Doxey of Ward Five, was slain Tuesday by his son-in-law, Ray Rivers, Jr., during a family dispute. The following article, which appeared in the Houston Chronicle, tells of the slaying: "Climaxing a bitter family argument, Ray Rivers, Jr., 21 year old welder, shot and killed his father in law, Kieffer C. Doxey, 50 year old truck driver, about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the duplex occupied by the two families, at 2317-19 Elysian. Charged before Justice Tom Maes with murder, Rivers was released from City Jail Tuesday under $ 2500 bond. Argued Over Trip To Doctor's The argument, according to Mrs. Rivers, was started by her father, who became enraged after the Rivers took their daughter to the doctor without taking the two Doxey children, who were also due to visit the doctor. "I asked my mother, when we started for the doctor's, about 6 o'clock, whether she wanted us to take my brother and sister, but she said 'No,' because they were out playing," Mrs. Rivers told Homicide Capt. George Peyton. After the Rivers returned from the doctor's, they had supper and then, Mrs. Rivers said, she went to her parents' apartment to bring home little Johnnie Ray Rivers, her two year old daughter who was playing in the Doxey apartment. Couldn't Be Mollified Mrs. Rivers said her father followed her home, cursing Rivers for having failed to take the Doxey children to the doctor's. Efforts by his own children and Mrs. Doxey to mollify him were unsuccessful, Mrs. Rivers said. After a heated argument, her father returned to his own apartment, but could be heard, through the thin wall of the duplex, shouting and cursing, Mrs. Rivers said. She became alarmed and went to a neighbor's to call police, she said, after her husband took his shotgun from a closet. Mrs. Doxey told police that her husband returned from the Rivers apartment in a high rage, and in spite of her efforts to prevent him, insisted on getting a metal wrench handle out of a tool box and going back to Rivers' apartment. Mother Called Warning As he started out the back door, Mrs. Rivers heard her mother call a warning to Rivers. Rivers said that he had locked the back door of his apartment, and that his father in law stood outside his window, cursing him and threatening him. Rivers told police that he tried to placate his father in law several times and warned him to go home, but his father in law replied: 'If you're not coming out, then I'm coming in to get you.'" Rivers said he then fired once through the window with his shotgun. The blast struck Doxey close to the heart. He staggered to the front of the duplex and then fell dead. --------------E5F7BCAC3F8DF657E6B05E68--

Files may be printed or copied for personal use only. From: February 21 & 28, 1902 Southern Sentinel Wiley J. Wilson The subject of this sketch was born in Autauga County, Alabama, April 20, 1821, and died near Wheeling, Louisiana at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hughes, January 9, 1902, aged 80 years, 8 months, and 20 days. Bro. Wilson joined the M. P. Church in Alabama when a young man and lived a consistent member of the same until his death. He left his native state while yet young and lived in Arkansas until 1854 when he removed to Louisiana and located near where he died. Bro. Wilson was married the third time and was the father of ten children, seven of whom preceded him to the eternal home. He was one of a family of ten, all of whom lived to a ripe old age, he being the last one to pass away. His last brother died in April, 1901. He was present and assisted in the organization, under the ministry of Rev. Hicks, of the M. P. Church at Mt. Zion and remained a member until he went to join the church triumphant. Bro. Wilson always filled his place in the church, was a kind and devoted husband, and affectionate father, an honorable citizen, and was loved by all who knew him. The writer was closely associated with the dear old brother during the last years of his life and has many pleasant recollections of his words of testimony concerning his Christian life and experience. He bore his affliction patiently, although he knew the near approach of death. As he lingered around the gates of eternity his only request and desire was that he could pass away easy, which prayer was answered when death came, only those by his bedside knowing when death came. He leaves his wife, three children, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death, but we know that our loss is his gain. The body was laid to rest in the Mt. Zion Cemetery where it will await the day when the trumpet shall sound and the grave shall give up their dead. Then this deal old father in Israel will come again and reap the reward of his stewardship here in this world. We would say to the bereaved ones let us take courage and run with patience the race that is set before us, ever holding to Jesus our great Captain until the battle of life is o'er and the victory won. May God help us to walk in that straight and narrow way, let our lives be long or short so when we come to press a dying pillow we may look back upon a life well and faithfully spent in the service of God; and then go to meet our blessed Savior and loved ones in that home above where parting comes no more. HIS PASTOR The following article appeared in the following week's edition: An Injustice Winnfield, La., Feb. 27, 1902 Editor, Southern Sentinel: The obituary of Judge Wiley Wilson, which appeared in your columns of last week, was written by some one who certainly was not familiar with the whole life and character of Judge Wilson and did not do full justice to his memory. Judge Wilson was elected as a democrat and served two years as parish Judge of this Parish; in 1878 and 1879. He was one of the leading spirits which helped to rid this parish of what was known as the West Clan. He was, during the days that led an active life, always foremost in whatever pertained to the good of Winn Parish. Yours Truly, X. X. X. --------------D22C58FF1FDAF8A46DF78754--

Mr. Heflin had been in failing health for a number of years, suffering with a rheumatic condition that developed after his retirement from the sheriff's office. For about six months of the past year Mr. Heflin remained in New Orleans in a hospital for treatment and was brought home about two months before his passing. He was born in Webster Parish on a spot in the town of Heflin on November 12, 1868, the son of a Confederate soldier, C. B. He came to Winnfield in 1905 and by means of his timber and lumber interests he became associated with many people of this section and with whom he made friends. In 1916, he was elected sheriff of Winn Parish, reelected in 1920, and in 1924, declining to make the race in 1928 hoping to retire to private life. He was later appointed a member of the parish board of equalization and at the time of his demise was a member of the state parole board. He was married to Miss Ella Jane Ball and to them four children were born, all of whom survive him, Dr. C. M. Heflin of Baton Rouge, Mrs. J. W. Fowler of Shreveport, Miss Eva Heflin, office deputy to Sheriff Bryant Sholars, and Herman Heflin of Winnfield.
