Files may be printed or copied for personal use only. From: August 5, 1927 Winnfield News-American Mrs. Martha T. Averett Dies Saturday P.M. Succumbs to Illness of Five Weeks; Funeral Sunday Mrs. Martha Timmerman Averett died at her home at eight o'clock Saturday evening following an illness of five weeks. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, Rev. P. M. Caraway, pastor of the First Methodist Church and Rev. J. D. Kitchingham, pastor of the Joyce Baptist Church, conducting the services. Interment was made in the Winnfield Cemetery. Martha Timmerman was born in Coosa County, Alabama, November 27, 1847 and lived there with her parents until grown. In Coosa County, December 8, 1864 she was married to David Franklin Averett, who was at that time a soldier in the Confederate Army and who was at home on furlough recuperating from a bullet wound in the forehead received at the Battle of the Wilderness. Mrs. Averett, in speaking of her marriage, the war, and her life, said to a friend a few months ago that she was proud of that scar in her husband's forehead for it showed that he was facing the enemy. For more than sixty years this grand old couple have lived happily together rearing a splendid family. Early in life Mrs. Averett united with the Baptist church and after years of faithful service came to the end of the way with a hope and faith that was beautiful to see. Her many attributes of character, chief among them, gentleness and refinement marked her as one of the world's gentlewomen. In 1877 Mr. and Mrs. Averett moved from Alabama to Louisiana and settled in Claiborne Parish. About thirteen years ago they came to Winnfield where they have continuously resided since, both healthy and hearty until about a year ago Mrs. Averett's health began to fail. Averett, Hallville, Texas; D. E. Averett, Gilmer, Texas; Walter Averett, Dallas, Texas; Mrs. W. J. Baker, Jackson, Miss., and Mrs. W. A. Stamper, Natchitoches. With the above mentioned children, other out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Webb Averett and son, Mr. George Averett, of Arcadia, Mrs. Walter Averett, Shreveport, Mr. Averett Watts, of Camden, Ark., and Mr. Hoie Spikes of Loraine, Texas. --------------A8C15078FE9B62F82DAFC1CC Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="gedavies.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Greggory E. From: February 23, 1950 Winn Parish Enterprise Winnfield Negro Killed By Falling Tree Last Friday Nath Harden, Winnfield Negro, was killed last Friday by a falling tree while cutting pulpwood. According to a report from the sheriff's office, Harden was cutting wood for E. R. Curry, on Tremont Lumber Company land, about 10 miles east of Winnfield, on the Olla road. He had cut one tree and it lodged. To make it fall, Harden cut another tree across it, and when the second tree fell, the butt end flew across it and hit him in the head. Harden was pinned under the second tree with his skull fractured and his backbone crushed. It is believed that he was killed instantly. According to information from the Winnfield Colored Burial Association, Harden was missed when he failed to come to lunch. It had been customary for him to join the rest of the crew at lunch time and when he failed to show up, one of the men went to look for him, and found him dead. Chief Deputy Miley Walsworth investigated and reported the death to be accidental. --------------43880525E5398EE035B36B01 Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="gedavies.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Greggory E.
