Hagen, 23 years old, who was killed last Thursday night when a loaded gun was discharged during a quarrel and fight with his brother, Frank Hagen, 19 years old, were held at Georgetown Cemetery, Friday afternoon. The Rev. A. H. Cullen, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield, officiated. Burial was in the Georgetown Cemetery. The deceased is said to have seized a 12-gauge double-barrel hammerless shotgun and struck his brother, Frank, about the hip. The gun was discharged, the full load entering the elder Hagen's heart, causing instant death. Hagen's death was declared accidental by Coroner Dr. S. C. Fitz, who, with deputies from the sheriff's office, examined the dead man and questioned witnesses. No arrest was made. Adams John Calvin Adams, age 46 years, died suddenly at his home at Sikes, January 13, 1929, following a stroke of paralysis. He was struck while shaving and fell on the floor. He was carried to his bed and seemed to regain consciousness soon after the first stroke , but he was soon overcome by another stroke and he died about two hours later. He and his family were getting ready to attend the funeral of his brother, H. J. Adams, who had a stroke of paralysis fourteen months ago. He began his church work in his boyhood days and continued until his death. He lived in Jackson Parish until nine years ago, then moved to Sikes where he has been a well known citizen since. He leaves his wife and five children to mourn his death, also an aged father, N. Q. Adams who is living in his seventy-fourth year; four brothers and five sisters also survive. Donohue, one of the oldest and most reliable section foremen on the L. R. & N. Railroad, died at her home in Winnfield, January 14, at 3:15 in the morning. Mrs. Donohue had been a long patient sufferer, the pains in the last moments of life were very intense, yet she bore them with a resignation that only those looking forward to the everlasting sweet peace at HOME could bear. Mrs. Donohue was born at Fayette, Miss., November 2, 1884, was united to Daniel P. Donohue at the place of her birth November 19, 1899. Mr. and Mrs. Donohue united with the Baptist Church at Winnfield, and have been faithful workers in the Master's cause since casting their Faith in their Lord. Besides the sorrowing husband, she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Caldwell of Bossier City and little Kathleen, aged ten years, and one son, Lawrence, of Winnfield. All that medical skill was done to avert the grim reaper for a time without avail, yet "Twas beautiful to have witnessed the faith in the Master when she knew that the span of life was near, said, Just a few more days and I'll be free." Buchans, age 42, of this place, who was seriously injured last December 15, while tripping logs near Dodson, La., was preparing to leave the Baptist Sanitarium, Alexandria, to return home, when complications brought about a relapse and he died at 12:45 Thursday, January 10, 1929. His remains were brought to Winnfield Thursday and funeral services were conducted at 10 o'clock Friday morning. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery. Mr. Buchans was injured when he fell on a pile of logs, fracturing his skull. He was carried to the Alexandria sanitarium where he showed all indications of a rapid recovery. During the two weeks preceding his death, he had been wheeling about the hospital in a rolling chair. His recovery seemed almost certain and death came as a surprise to his relatives and many friends. Newsom, who died of apoplexy at his home in Hickory Valley, 10 o'clock Sunday morning, January 13, were held at the Shady Grove Church Monday. The Rev. L. D. Emmons, lifelong friend of the deceased and former pastor of the Shady Grove Church, had charge of the services. The Rev. Emmons spoke consoling words to the bereaved family and used as his text 1 Cor: 15, "Concerning our Savior in the resurrection and our life to its conclusion." Interment was in the Sikes Cemetery. A large encourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the last rites. S. R. Newsom was born at Hickory Valley February 23, 1849, being 79 years, 10 months, and 20 days old at the time of his death. He was a self-made man, being, being a great reader, a student, a teacher nad acted as a physician when needed by his friends. Mr. Newsom played in important part in the affairs of Winn Parish. He was a moderator of Shady Grove Association 13 years, and had acted as clerk before that time. He was a member of the Police Jury four years. He was kind and considerate; a member of the Baptist Church for 50 years and led a devoted and consecrated life to the service of the Lord. March 1st, 51 years ago, he was married to Mary Wallace, to which union ten children were born, three preceding the father in death. The following survive him: his widow, six sons, W. W. Newsom, Decatur, Miss.; G. M. Newsom, Hickory Valley; A. H. Newsom and J. R. Newsom, Monroe; L. T. Newsom, Bossier City, S. R. Newsom, Jr., Monroe; and one daughter, Mrs. H. V. Mayes. The following relatives and friends from out of town attended the funeral rites: Mrs. C. C. Jarrell, Columbia; Dr. L. R. Newsom and Henry Machen, Monroe; Mr. and Mrs. H. L. After an illness of several months, George Gibson "Gip" Barton, 55, succumbed in a local hospital Saturday, February 26, at 8:30 a.m. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Taylor, Ark., with burial in the Sharon Cemetery near Taylor. A native of Arkansas, Mr. Barton moved to Winnfield eight years ago. Maseberg, who would have been 85 years old if she had lived until April 11, 1950, were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. E. Berry, Elm Street, Winnfield, Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the services. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery under direction of Edmonds Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were Willard Adams, Marshall Berry, Harper Terrill, Leon Roberts, Kermit Phillips, and Reginald Seiler. Mrs. Maseberg died in the hospital in Alexandria Wednesday at 1 a.m. where she had undergone a second operation following several weeks of critical illness here. Born and reared near Atlanta, Mrs. Maseberg was Miss Missouri Sandifer prior to marriage to Mr. Maseberg, Sr. She spent most of her life in the Atlanta and Wheeling communities, but in more recent years has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. S. E. Berry, in Winnfield. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Atlanta. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Kate Adams and Mrs. Addie Berry of Winnfield, and Mrs. Louise Pressley of Palestine, Texas; one son, E. B.
