James, a resident of Royal, died at his home in that town, aged 65 years. The deceased has been a resident of Winn Parish for 56 years. When 9 years of age his father moved into the house where Mr. James died, and he has continuously occupied it since. W. R. James was both a farmer and merchant. He was a devoted member of the Baptist Church. Mr. James was one of those sturdy characters whose lives are a shining example to others, filled with deeds of love and kindness and Christian charity. He served as a Southern soldier, tried and true, in Company E, 28th Louisiana Infantry, and was a member of David Pierson Camp No. 1603, U. C. V. It is said of him that he never refused aid to an applicant and never failed to have returned any loan of funds which he gave. He has joined his comrades in the Great Beyond and rests in peace under the shade of the trees. He leaves an only son, Dr. E. A. James, of Curry, to survive him, besides other relatives, among who is his nephew, J. W. Boyett, Jr., of this city. Oglesby received a telegram late Tuesday afternoon from Bolivar, Tennessee, stating that her niece, Mary Anne Emerson, had drowned that morning at nine o'clock. Mrs. Oglesby hastily left for Bolivar soon after she received the message. The Commercial Appeal of July the 7th gives the following account of the tragedy: "Bolivar, Tenn., July 6th, 1926. A party of girls, eight in number, started from Bolivar this morning to enjoy a day in the woods, pitching their camp near Blue Bend, a noted spot in Hatchie River bottoms about a mile north of town. Shortly after arriving, two of the number, Mary Anne Emerson and Evelyn Savage, decided to go in bathing over the protests of their companions. They walked out into the water about waist deep, when Miss Emerson who was in advance stepped into water over her head. She screamed and pulled Miss Savage in with her. Miss Emerson could not swim and went down. Miss Savage finally loosened her grip and swam out. Miss Emerson sank several times and some of the girls seeing her predicament threw a quilt into the water, but it was out of her reach, and she went down for the last time. Panic stricken the girls came back and gave the alarm, when a hundred or more of our citizens hurried to the scene. The body was recovered about three hours later. It was thought that life remained and she was rushed to Jackson for treatment, but it was too late. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Emerson, Miss Emerson was only 16 years of age, a bright and beautiful girl, a favorite with all who knew her." Miss Emerson visited her relatives in Winnfield last Christmas and was a general favorite among the young people of this place. She was the oldest girl of a large family of eleven children and is the first to be claimed by death. Miss Savage is a niece of Mrs. Dr. Kelly, who, with her children, is now on a visit to Bolivar. --------------0B6A95BFEC5DC145A2DAE9A4--

To the list, Jimmy Cooley pointed out that many may not understand what the "Oaths of Office" that I posted to the archives. Anyone who is commissioned to any particular office in La., such as sheriff, clerk of court, tax assessor, justice of the peace, constable, district attorney, school board, police jury (county commission in many states), coroner, city, town, village mayor or councilman or alderman, or, any board appointed position by the governor or state legislature, etc., must take an oath of office. This is truly one of the overlooked genealogical sources we have in our courthouses. Jimmy, thanks for pointing out to me what I should not have assumed. Gregg
First of all, thank you Peggy for the round of applause. I enjoy doing it. All of us who have been involved in family research know that without volunteer efforts, none of us would have nearly as much information as we do on our family. About the Old Soldier's Home work, I would appreciate knowing anything I can about this. I have for years been working on a roster of the men and boys from Winn Parish who served in the War For Southern Independence, Union and Confederate. Possibly, this publication you mention could shed some very important light on my project. And, Peggy, I might have erred in the naming of the file on the oaths as I did not put any numbers in the file name. Does it matter? Gregg
Some of you may be interested to know that the records of the Camp Nichols Soldier's Home are in the process of being published, or so I've been told by the archivist at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans. I had occasion to look at a microfilmed copy of one of the record books while I was in Salt Lake last year. They are a *wonderful* source of information. I intend to contact the archivist again and inquire on the progress of this publication. I'm anxious for it to come out. If anyone knows any news of this project, please let us all know. I think she said they were being published by a New Orleans genealogical organization but I'm not sure about that. Peggy "Greggory E. Hi everyone, I've just linked Gregg's Winn Oaths of Office file on the PARISH GOVERNMENT page of the Winn Archives. This is the "little" file he was talking about!! I just have to say that we in Winn Parish are so very fortunate to have someone like Gregg who is willing to take the time to make available to us records that a lot of you wouldn't have access to otherwise. And this file took a LOT OF TIME!!!! I know from my association with the other archive coordinators in the state that we are very lucky. They would LOVE to have a Gregg in their parish contributing so faithfully to their archives! Some of them have to beg for even the smallest contribution. Thanks Gregg! I appreciate all your hard work and I know everyone else does too! Peggy http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/winn.htm

Thompson on Saturday, Dec. 29th, brought grief and sorrow to this city and community as well as to all who were so fortunate to know him. He has lived here a number of years having moved from Claiborne Parish, La., where he was born Sept. 2, 1852. He joined the Methodist Church in early manhood living his life for others, never failing to grasp every opportunity to help those in need, and to comfort and encourage those in trouble and sorrow. His ideas for higher and nobler things were felt by all with whom he came in contact. His influence will help to carry on the great work but his place will ever be vacant. He was married to Miss Nanny Van Hook, July 3, 1883, who with the following children survive him: Mrs. J. T. Huston, El Dorado, Ark.; Mrs. A. L. Allen and Mrs. Mat Milam, Winnfield, La.; W. L. and H. B. Thompson, Shreveport; Graydon Thompson, Belcher, and Parker Thompson, Winnfield, and a host of other relatives and friends. Our hearts go out in love and sympathy to these loved ones. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Sunday, Dec. 30, 11:00 a.m. by his pastor, Rev. Thompson, assisted by Rev. Christy, Strong, Ark., and Rev. Carter, pastor of the Baptist Church at Junction City. The love and esteem that was held for him was made manifest by the lovely and numerous floral offerings. A Friend. --------------8DEB0A51752A5F032FB2E96F--
