    1. [LAWINN-L] QUESTIONS
    2. Hi, I was at the Wilkinson County, Mississippi courthouse on tuesday and would like to thank the families that filed all the information. GOD BLESS YOU! Now for my questions: One of my family members was getting a divorce. Amy Cupit divorcing Thomas H. Rawlins and in this divorce that went on for about 5 years. It said on each entry of the Court docket Amy Cupit " With her NEXT Friend". Does anyone know what this means? On another Record Martin Rawlins turned over all his belongings to his brother Thomas H. Rawlins Dr . Does this DR mean Doctor because I don't believe he was a Doctor?? I have seen it twice behind his name.

    3. Wow! Thanks so much for that encouraging note! I hope you won't mind if I share your message with our list. I've told them how great John is but it's always nice to get a second opinion!! John is without a doubt one of the best speakers I've ever heard. If you class Mary Nell Bryant with him, then we'll definitely have to keep her in mind for a future seminar. 1. [LAWINN-L] cluster pages and search engines
    2. Since I have had several people write and ask me how to use cluster pages, and search engines. I thought I would send this along to the list. To show you what can be done with a tiny bit of knowing how to use the tools that are available to us, I took the name Hatten, which I have been working on for an article and ran three searchers. Search #1: looked at the main obit index for any Hatten obits listed: 21 entries Search #2: Used the search engine on the archive main index page to search for Hattens listed in any Winn Parish entry in the archives: 217 entries Search #3: Used the "Primary" search engine on the "Cluster Pages" that can be found at http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/LA/Winn and found 332 entries for Hatten, including some just across the line in Jackson Parish and in Catahoula Parish. !!! 332 connecting links compared to 21 is a fair number. I did the same for the name WOMACk and found 934 in Louisiana compared to 27 in the obit index and 374 in the Winn Parish search engine. All this took me about 5 minutes (of course, longer if I looked at and down loaded what I needed.) And a lot of them found me as submitter to articles, marriages, land records, etc. in Winn Parish and elsewhere. The "Cluster Pages" for any surname, etc. can be found by going to http://resources.rootsweb.com/ That page will give you several links. Surnames, US counties (same as parishes), US state, and etc. You choose what you want to work with and work your way down into the level you need. Make sure you check the entire page and not just what is showing when it pops up as sometimes it appears you have not changed pages. Good luck and have fun. 2. Beverly
    3. Jo, Did you mean that my "personal" Terral page could be linked????? I requested this of the Union Parish site - and was told they could not do that! I was going to request one of Winn AND Grant AND LaSalle - when the project is completed - a Virtual Cemetery of Terrals - with lineage and notes - and wanted it linked to cemetery transcriptions (the ones with a ton of Terrals in them - so cousins could find each other) After the brush off I got in Union Parish - I have almost given up on the project! I have 50G server space at angelfire and 300G space availble on our server that we own - so am not limited to size - like I would be elsewhere. I was just trying to do the most complete Terral project to-date! (Some of these groups of Terrals did not even know they connected!!!) Let me know if it's OK - and I'll get back to finishing up the project! Hearn Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2001 06:36:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Landreth Cassie <lil_golfer_gurl@yahoo.com> To: gedavies@iamerica.net Hi! My name is Cassie Landreth. I am currently doing research on my family tree. I found a J.L. Hearn in the Jackson and Winn Parish records. If this is the man that I am looking for, he is my g-g-g-g-grandfather. I have had trouble finding him as well as information about him. Could you tell me if this man's name is Jessie Lee Hearn? Do you have a census or other records around 1880 or so that say who he lived with and what he did at that time? I would really appreciate you help. Thanks for your time. I am in Texas and don't have the privilege of being able to go to the courthouse whenever I want. I have to drive 800 miles and sense I work I can only do this once in a great while. For which I have been able to a couple of times. But I all ways get home and there was something I missed. So the obits are of great help. Even though you shouldn't take them as gospel. For newspapers make mistakes too. I love the information I gleam from the web site. It just seams lately there hasn't been much in put. I use to get updates ever week or so here lately they have been few and far between. Hope our information sources haven't dried up. Christine Neal

    1. [LAWINN-L] Obit direct posting
    2. I was just curious to know what the bickering was about concerning direct posting. What would be the problem with that? At least there are those trying to contribute. The ones bickering were probably those who dont make the time to contribute but want the info. Curious!

It is a very complicated system and one bad subscriber -- I am NOT talking about Gregg -- can ruin the list for all the others. LAWinn is one of the smaller list I administer. When you have a list with over 300 or so subscribers, there has to be rules everyone plays by.... it would be similar to having a meeting at the WPGHA with 300 or so members in attendance. Everyone has their own opinion.... and everyone wants to be heard, so nothing gets done. I don't think Dale was wanting the obits put on the mailing list as much as he was wanting Gregg to start doing them again. Many people don't know how many "irons" Gregg has in the fire at the present time. All of the WPGHA officers have many jobs and/or responsibilities. Not only does Gregg hold a full time job, he is also teaches classes at NSU. Along the same theme of wanting the obits for the details. How many of you have been using the "cluster pages" to find information in obits and other articles on your families that are not in the main obit that can be found by going to the index page??? Also how many of you know how to find obits that Gregg had just posted without waiting for them to be indexed? {Yes, there is a formula to rootsweb!} Maybe what we need is a few lessons on how to make the most of the internet for research <smile> Annette listowner

    2. Dear Subscribers: Some of you may be new to the list, but this all came up a few years back when posting obits directly drew some sharp exchanges. The 'fur flew' for a few weeks and when it was over nobody knew what happened, or who, if anyone, won. Lot's of feelings were hurt. This can of worms has sharp edges. Tread softly. The Winn folk get along great, but some people hold strong opinions as to the appropriateness of direct posting of archived material, both pro and con. While I enjoyed Gregg's posts, I did not enjoy the bickering that ensued because of them. Gary Foster

    3. Bro. Dale, I have not forsakey y'all. Just been busy and working on too many things right now. I am having to prepare about four lesson plans at present and today, I completed my first interview on the World War II Oral History Project. I just hope all interviews are as good as the one I did today of Mr. Jim Russell, Jr. Mr. Russell was an intelligence officer in the Pentagon during the war and of course one of those icons of Winn Parish over the past 50+ years. If all the interviews go as easy as his, we'll do fine. I'll get back on the obits ASAP. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
