    1. [LAWINN-L] WWII Oral History Project
    2. Greggory E. Davies
    3. Good Evening: I wanted to update the list as to how the WWII Oral History Project is going and to thank the participants and those who have worked so tirelessly to make this effort a success. We have thus far conducted over 50 interviews. Today was busy. Following the coverage by local media, both the Enterprise and KVCL, we had a drove of vets show today to interview, and I am afraid we might have had a couple leave as the line got long and we were a bit shorthanded on interviewers. We had Dr. Peters, Austin Abrams, Ken Peavy, Barbara Clark, Peggy Beaubouef, Barbara Moon and I, doing solid interviews from about 8:30 a.m. to about 1:30 p.m. A special thanks to Mrs. Barbara Moon for refreshments. We have worked hard for the past two weekends and some have done interviews outside the courthouse so we elected today to take next Saturday off, regroup, and figure out what course of action to follow in order to get as many more interviews done as humanly possible. I know I speak for all who have assisted with this project that this has been a most rewarding experience. I am a large man, 6'2 1/2", 300 pounds, and have been in law enforcement since 1976. I've seen a lot and not much bothers me, but I can tell you that while interviewing a couple of our vets today, I became overcome with emotion. If you ever wanted to see a big man cry, today would have been your chance. We as a general public do not know, nor can we comprehend, what these men faced during WW II, the sacrifices they made, and the sacrifices the people back home made to aid the war effort. We owe every WWII vet much more gratitude than they've ever received. I am amazed at the regard combat vets had for the people back home who were assisting in the war effort. I never really gave that much thought. I continue to be amazed at how humble our veterans are concerning their efforts and sacrifices. Society regards people like Michael Jordan, Mark McGuire, Babe Ruth, and other sports figures, along with others, as great American heroes; and many of them are indeed good people. I feel safe in saying that we have been interviewing America's real heroes the past two weeks. Everyone of these guys are real heroes and none of them will admit it nor will they accept credit for having saved the world, which they truly did. If ever our organization took on a meaningful project, this is it, and I for one am proud we are doing it. I think that future generations will be very proud of us and I am proud of each and every participant who has given freely of their time to be interviewed and in particular for having fought a war to make my life free and easy. I have listed below the names of those thus far interviewed. No doubt I have omitted a couple of names, but don't panic. The tapes will all be turned over to Carolyn Phillips at the museum and eventually to Northwestern State University where they will be transcribed. Barnett, Loyd C. Barnett, Odis Bartlett, R. C. Bozeman, Estes Buchanan, Robert L. Burrell, Warren C. Calhoun, Walter Chandler, Ed Chandler, Charles Chandler, Lonnie Collins, Edward (Junior) Curry, Drew Derr, Chester Erskins, W. C. Ferguson, Leonard Orren Gaar, Loy Gaar, Lee Gaar, Paul V. Gregory, Alon Grigg, Edward Hand, David Hoob, Mrs. Lanelle Mixon Howard, Hubert Jackson, John Glenn Johnson, Willie Jones, Rev. Jack Kelley, Beauford Lambright, Dawson Martin, Alton Mitchell, John Parker, Marshall Peters, Jean Mixon Peters, Dr. J. Paul Peterson, Mrs. Kelley Peterson, Kelly Poisso, Ben B. Rieson, James Riggs, Arch Rogers, Huey "Pete" Russell, James G., Jr. Shaw, Mrs. Eugene Shaw, Eugene Shell, Dennis Shell, Denton Shell, Dudley Shell, Sara Jackson Shelton, James Leo Skains, Richard W. Smith, Vara Ferguson Swilley, Orland Tarver, Howard Taylor, Thomas L. Waters, John H. Watts, Mrs. Louise Wilson, Ira Again, thanks for your participation. Gregg Davies

If you haven't sent yours in yet, you'd better hurry, you don't want to miss this .... if for no other reason than to get a terrific goodie bag and a chance to win some great door prizes! Thanks, Peggy

    1. [LAWINN-L] Roy Johnson; WWII Oral History Project
    2. Greggory E. Davies
    3. Greetings: First of all, we received a very nice donation to the WPGHA today in memory of Roy Johnson from Tommy Joe Willis. Thanks to Tommy Joe who is always doing whatever he can for our organization, long distance, at that. Secondly, this is a reminder to all that we will again this Saturday, August 25, from 9 a.m. until, at the Winn Parish Courthouse, conduct WWII oral history interviews. We had quite a showing last Saturday, about 25, and some have conducted interview on their own outside the announced times. We are thankful to those who have been so helpful thus far. Monday, we sent a letter out to all known WWII veterans still residing in Winn Parish, advising of our project and asking them to come Saturday, so anyone who is able to assist, we will need you. We had a good response from our volunteers last Saturday, hopefully we will be overrun this Saturday. I am not sure if everyone involved is a subscriber to this list, so if any of you know of anyone who needs to be contacted, please do so. I don't think Mrs. Barbara Moon is a list subscriber, but we certainly want her there as she always brings good groceries. Luckily and happily, I was allowed to take home what was left from her stash last Saturday. Also, I am not sure if Mr. Austin Abrams is a subscriber, but I have included him in the announcement. Mr. Abrams managed to get a couple of veterans to the session last Saturday that I would have bet money would not have shown. My personal thanks to him. I am not sure if Mrs. Barbara Clark is subscribed to the list or not, sense she is now back on line. She allowed us use of her office and came to assist but had to be called out of town at the last minute due to a death in her family. I don't want to take steam away from Peggy, but I think she wants to try and have a short meeting Saturday with anyone involved in the Sept. 15 conference we are sponsoring. I understand we have quite a few registered to attend, plus we've received some donations from folks afar who cannot attend. Mr. Aubrey Hayden, nationally known artist, has donated one of his fine prints for a door prize (Winnfield Hotel), and those things have sold for a good price, far and near. I think Peggy will probably follow up with an announcement regarding the brief meeting concerning the conference. Thanks to all of you who have helped thus far this year, and to everyone who is a member of the WPGHA. Gregg

This is an old post and you and other Willis researchers were very generous in helping me get to know a little about William. I especially enjoyed the church minutes. What a picture that gives us of life in the mid-1800s. I grew up without much knowledge of my Willis family. William's son, my great-grandfather, Isaac, died when my grandmother was just a young girl. It makes a fellow proud to know he's descended from a large solid family like the Willises of Winn Parish. Again, thanks for the help.

    1. [LAWINN-L] WWII Oral History Project & Roy Johnson
    2. Greggory E. Davies
    3. Greetings: First of all, on a sad note, Roy Johnson's funeral services will be Monday morning, 10 a.m., Southern Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Garden of Memories. Visitation is Sunday evening from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m., and Monday morning from 8 a.m. until services. Regarding todays session of interviews, it went very well and thanks to those volunteers who assisted with the project. We have conducted about 25 interviews total, with about 18 or so being done today. For those of you who have never felt a closeness to the veterans of WWII, who in all fairness, saved the world, once you sit down with one of these great men or women and hear their story, you certainly will be proud to be an American and proud of what they did for us. There has been a very common thread to all these interviews. To a single person, not one of them think they did anything spectacular, and every one of them when thanked for their service to their country, say, "I didn't really do anything. We (not I) simply did what we had to do and what all Americans did." We will continue these mass interviews next Saturday, and as far after that as we need to and can afford to and still make the time line. It is truly an honor and privilege and a project we can all be proud of. I think some future generations will certainly be proud of us for having pulled this off. Today, the several who were there to work, discussed possibly doing a similar project on Korean and Vietnam War veterans. I certainly want to see us do so and I think all of the membership will agree as well. Gregg Davies

    3. Folks, NO arrangements have been made regarding Roy's funeral. I understand the family will do so tomorrow (Sat). I am not sure that I will be around tomorrow evening, I know I'll be gone most of Sunday, and all of Monday. It bothers me that I will probably be out of town when Roy's funeral is held, but, I have committments to about 40 folks Monday that I cannot get out of. I say the above to say this: if any of you learn of Roy's service arrangements before I do, please post them to this list. I have ordered flowers on behalf of the Winn Genealogy & Historical Assn. for the services. Thanks to the many of you who have expressed sympathies and I will pass those along to the family. Gregg
