Thanks very much for the obituary. It answers some questions and raises some others. Hammond is in Tangipahoa Parish, which is where my wife's grandparents are from. My wife's grandfather was born in 1907 and shows on the 1910 census. Ivy was born in 1910 and didn't show on the census, which is understandable. The obit indicates a third brother but doesn't name him. This could still be our Ivy. The death certificate should have the middle name which would confirm the relationship. Would that be available from the Parish? I'll see if I can find a hone listing for John M. Bankston; he should be able to answer a lot of questions for us. I would like to obtain information on an Ivy Bankston who died in West Baton Rouge on 25 May 1994. Is there anyone on this last who lives in or near West Baton Rouge who could advse me about how to obtain an obituary and/or death cedrtificate? We believe that Ivy may have been a close relative of my wife and would like to determine if that is so and if there are any surviving children or grandchildren. Thanks, John Maylone

Joseph Sumrall will present a program on "How to Inventory a Cemetery" at the next meeting of the Washington Parish Genealogical and Historical Society. Mr. Sumrall has done much work in cemeteries in MS and LA. Several MS counties have had his findings compiled into books so that researchers like ourselves can have ready access to the information. Mr. Sumrall will demonstrate to us a systematic way of doing an inventory of this type. (This program had been planned for an earlier date and had to be postponed.) The group will also discuss plans for the upcoming display at the Washington Parish Fair. We will have an educational display in the Armory Building. The display has been planned already. Some of us will need to work a shift at the display during fair hours. Russ Williams will be here also. He is excited about being able to be at the display. In his publications about Washington Parish history, he likes to use this opportunity to visit with folks and gain new information. Information about our group, as well as membership applications, will be available at our booth. It will also contain educational materials about genealogical work. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting of our group. We will meet at 5:30 pm at the Bogalusa Branch of the Washington Parish Library. Our meeting date is Tuesday, October 9, 2001. Sylvia
I am researching Jean Job Tousinau (Tousineau, Jurineau) residing in West Baton Rouge Parish prior to 1834, and his wife Anne Marie Courtian Thomas Courtain (Curtin) and his wife Genevieve Bonvillain Daniel Tousinau . Daniel is shown to be married with a child, on a land patent application in 1844 in Pointe Coupee Parish, however I have not been able to find a record of the marriage, or of his birth to Jean Job and Anne Marie Tousinau. Daniel is shwon on the 1850 census in Wilkinson County Mississippi at age 40. He marries in 1853 to Mary Ann More, and after her death to Elizabeth Jackson McCartny. Any inforamtion will be appreciated.

Ruckdeschel) Reply-to: ruck@datasync.com To: LGHS@aol.com Dear Sir or Madam, I am a student at Nicholls State University and I have an assignment to find out what was served at the dinners(rumor has it that there were 3) associated with the signing of the Lousiana Purchase in 1803. I know that the signing took place at the Cabildo, but I am having a difficult time finding information surrounding the events. If information is not available on the dinners, I can also provide information about the types of food typically served during the time and the types of flowers and foliage that would be used for decoration. I would appreciate any information that you could provide and possible resources that I could check. Looking forward to hearing from you. Yours truly, Erica Ruckdeschel

From: saks@huntnet.net (Sylvia Smith) The next meeting of the Washington Parish Genealogical & Historical Society will be on Tues, Sept. 11 at 5:30 pm at the Franklinton Branch of the Washington Parish Library. One of our members, Mrs. Vicki Knight will present a program entitled "Preserving the Memories of Your Family and Friends." It will be a workshop/demonstration about how to record memories and preserve history. Vicki is a school teacher/librarian who has more than eight years experience and has completed over fifty recordings of the late Mrs. Zuma Magee and the late Mr. Daunton Gibbs, parish historians, and other senior citizens, family members, and parish residents, WWII veterans, and more. Mrs. Knight's desire is to preserve local history and heritage and to create this desire in others of recording first-hand accounts of memories. The workshop will be an informal "how-to" using various methods utilized by Mrs. Knight through experience and trial and error. She will 1) make suggestions for what to consider before, during, and after the interview; 2) cover the use of audio and video recordings in capturing and preserving history; and 3) provide follow-up that suggests ways to document and preserve the recordings. The workshop will consist of sharing her methods and helpful hints and a brief demonstration. Handouts will be provided. This workshop is for all ages-- students and adults-- for anyone who has heard interesting and treasured stories and who wishes to learn a good way to preserve them. Everyone is invited to attend!
