Rhoda Jane Allen, daughter of Elizabeth Allen 2 children: b. 1846 Marghana Rheams (married SS Dixon) b. 1848 Richardson Allen Rheams (married Martha Dixon) Only public record found is the Livingston Parish Mortality Schedule for 1850 saying he died in July, 1850 after being sick with pneumonia for 6 days at age 26 years. Perhaps, according other family records, may have been a junior, but I tend to believe this may not have been given name, but nickname or aka name. P. Richards $7.50 St. Helena World War I veterans $18.00 The latest publication of the St. Helena Historical Association, Inc. is St. Helena Remembers Her World War I Veterans. This all came about when Inez Tate located a book pertaining to the World War I veterans of St. Helena Parish in the Clerk of Court's office. It was a summary of the discharged, listed three on each page and in alphabetical order. A contact made with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Baton Rouge produced little information. The officer was familiar with the book and stated that until 1987, these books were in all parishes in Louisiana. At that time, they were turned over to the Louisiana State Archives for safekeeping. He did not know the origin of the books, and the Louisiana State Archives had no information regarding the origin of them either. Some veterans took their discharge papers to the Clerk of Court, and copies were made and retained there. A review of the St. Helena Cemetery reveals there were World War I veterans buried in the various cemeteries who were not included in the book of discharges nor was a copy of their discharge filed in the Clerk of Court's office. The book includes interesting information on the veterans' service time. Noted in this publication are the addresses of the little post offices no longer in existence. Also included are interesting stories and data on the veterans. The price of this soft-cover book is $18.00, postpaid. Order directly from St. Helena Historical Association, 6370 La. 43, Montpelier, LA 70422-8227. The cover picture shows the type of uniform worn by the doughboys.

Hi List, In hopes that someone missed my post the first time, I am re-submitting it. Still looking for the burial place of SIMEON BOURG, born in Labadieville, LA, lived in Port Allen, LA and ran for sheriff of Port Allen in 1912. He died shortly after but cannot find any records indicating this. Would like to find his grave site to pass along to his 83 year old granddaughter before she passes on. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated, no lead too small. Thanks Adrien

Subject: Geezers "Geezers"(slang for an old man) are easy to spot: At sporting events, during the playing of the National Anthem, Old Geezers hold their caps over their hearts and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Geezers remember World War I, the Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor,Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing, not to mention Vietnam. If you bump into an Old Geezer on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an Old Geezer on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Geezers trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Geezers hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old Geezers get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth on TV or in movies. Old Geezers have moral courage. They seldom brag unless it's about their grandchildren. It's the Old Geezers who know our great country is protected, not by politicians or police, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Old Geezers with their decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old Geezers! Pass this on to all the Old Geezers you know

Mr. Simmons' presentation will include information on the Battle of Port Hudson plus other wartime activities in the area. He will bring with him some authentic Civil War weapons and reproduction uniforms and equipment. The time of his Civil war Presentation is 5:30 at the Franklinton branch of the Washington Parish Library. The date is Tuesday, March 12, 2002. The public is invited to participate in this meeting. Hi All This is something someone sent to one of my list I heard something really neat at my FHC this evening. Someone said that sometimes, a census taker would ask a person to state their age in terms of how old they were as of, for example, March 1. (Assume the census is being taken on July 1, 1860.) The person might say 32 years old, but really when he is answering the question, he is really 33, only his birthdate was after March 1. If you didn't know this, you would see 32 in the census and assume he was born in 1848. But suppose the previous time around in 1850, the census taken just asked for the person's age on the day the census is being taken. Say it is being taken on July 1 again. This time, the person will give his correct age as 23, and now if you calculate when he was born, you'd assume the person was born in 1847. The person at the FHC said this is one reason why the ages of people in the census records sometimes don't match from census to census.
Hi All Some list members have asked if there are any list rules. Here they are............. Hi David, Just what do you mean by "GIS LOCATOR DEVICES"? Is this the same as the GPS for Global Positioning Sensor? If so, contact me and I might possibly have some input for you. Adrien adrien@stargazer.net
I want to call your attention to a new free (no advertising) volunteer-based resource for on-line genealogy. The US GeoGen Project combines the use of geographic information systems (hand-held GIS locator devices) and genealogy to assist researchers to find site of interest. The first places to be added to the on-line database are cemeteries. I volunteered to coordinate the process of establishing sites for Louisiana parishes. (I grew up in Acadia Parish and much of my research is done in Southwest Louisiana.) http://www.samlyons.org/usgeogen-LA/browsela.htm I created preliminary tables of the cemeteries in every parish but I know that these are incomplete. I used the US Geological Survey's Geographic Names Database to get the cemetery locations. This list omits many old cemeteries, most new cemeteries and almost all family cemeteries. I would like your help to gather the names and locations of the cemeteries that aren't listed. Even if you can't provide the location, it would be very helpful if you could provide me with the names of cemeteries that are not on my list. I'm involved in this project because of a frustrating experience I had several years ago. I spent several days on two separate trips to Louisiana trying to find an old cemetery. No one I asked had ever heard about it. Although I eventually found it and found a grave marker for my ancestor, I've never forgotten the frustration at knowing the general vicinity but not the exact place to look. With the low cost of GIS devices (Wal-Mart sells very good ones for less than $125) it is possible to directly go anywhere if there is proper information posted about location. Please look at what I've done with Acadia Parish to see what is possible. I have the exact locations of some cemeteries and I'll have the locations of the other Acadia Parish sites listed soon. From each cemetery with a known exact location you may click on the blue icon to get a map showing the exact spot. Also, clicking on the cemetery name brings you to a page by the local genealogy society to get more information or to order books of grave marker transcriptions. There are other possibilities for linking to local groups.
