I checked my mail and finally received the for SS-5, Application for Social Security Account, on my great-uncle Earnie Wilkins. He died in the mid 1960's, and was my only relative in my grandfather's generation I had hopes of finding documentation to provide my great-grandparents info. My grandfather was John William Wilkins. This is what I know: John William WILKINS was supposedly born somewhere in GA, possibly Chattooga Co. in about 1879. He had brothers Earnie Wilkins, Dock Wilkins, and Pete Wilkins, that I know of. John William WILKINS died in Bossier Parish, LA in 1927 at the age of 48 years leaving a wife MARY LORENE LOCKEY WILKINS and 6 children. Dock Wilkins was unknown to me, he did marry and his wife was buried somewhere in Arkansas. Dock later ended up in Bossier Parish LA where he apparently died because he is buried in Rocky Mount Cemetery in Bossier Parish next to his brother, John William WILKINS. I originally knew nothing at all about Pete Wilkins. My father (youngest child of John William WILKINS and Mary Lorene LOCKEY WILKINS) died on Sept. 16, 1999 and after the funeral I was talking with my cousin, his sister's daughter. I then learned that Peter WILKINS lived in the Lufkin, TX area. That is how my aunt met her husband, Archie Avery Crawford and ended up in the Dallas, TX area the duration of her married life. She had gone to Uncle Peter's in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area for a visit and met Archie Crawford at that time. Peter WILKINS (called Uncle Pete by some of the family) had a son named Roy WILKINS and possibly another son? named L.J. WILKINS. I think Roy WILKINS wife was named Mindy WILKINS and that Roy & Mindy had a daughter named Evaline (sp?) WILKINS. After reading the SS-5 I just received today on Earnie WILKINS, the following information was obtained: Earnie WILKINS applied for a social security number on August 23, 1937. At that time he was living in Arkansas, I am unable to make out the city. It looks like it says Ehreat or Chuat or Ehrent or something along that line. It is clear, but the handwriting is in script, not printed, thus hard to make out. Another entry on the form asks for his business name of present employer. It says Memphis _____ ______ Co. The two blanks are clear, but unreadable. The first word starts with an N. It could be Nat. (an abbreviated name or just Nat or Not. The 2nd word could be absolutely anything. It starts with possibly a G or a B and seems to have 3 or 4 letters. The next line asks for the business address of present employer. It says Memphis _____. The Memphis is very clear, the next word could be ANYTHING!. It could be "Tenn". It could be "Drive", it is very very difficult to read this person's handwriting. Per this form, Earnie Wilkins was age 49 at his last b'day prior to applying for the form and his date of birth is Dec. 15, 1887. According to this form his place of birth is ______, Ala. This city or county could be Check, Eheck, Cheek. It appears to have 5 letters, possibly 6. The second letter is definitely an "h". If it does have 6 letters, then the last letter is an "s", but I really think it only has 5 letters and ends in a "k" or an "h". It lists his father as "Dock Wilkins" and his mother as "Fannie Floyd". Those at least are very clear. About a year or so ago, I spoke with a local historian here in Bossier Parish with access to GA census records and he found a Dock Wilkins born in Chatooga Co, GA about 1858. At that time I was searching for the brother of John William Wilkins (Dock) not the father with the same name. With an 1858 est. birthday, I knew that he had found possibly my great-grandfather rather than my grandfather's brother. I now have confirmation that my great-grandfather was also Dock Wilkins.
