Self, who married J. Marcus, who was a Confederate veteran. I believe they had a daughter named Tamara. My brother and I are searching for family in and/or around Vernon Parish. My grandfather, James Monroe Marcus, married Eula Joyner from Yazoo City, Mississippi. This we have pieced together with much help from newly found "cousins" in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. We're still searching, without a GREAT deal of success, to find the Marcus' family who may be known to some of you thru marriage. Our grandfather, James Monroe Marcus, and Eula Joyner, had 3 children: J. D. Marcus, James Marcus, and Curtis Marcus, the latter being our father, who died in Delaware in 1987. They had a wife's name as Bertha Welch (buried next to him in the cemetery, there is a Bertha Pollard Welch - probably a second wife after Clara's death). His father was Sylvester Welch and mother was Mindy McCollough. They had a birth date (for Mitchell) as Oct 31, 1896. I do know that William H. Mathis was the brother to John Tyler Mathis and he married Dorothy Jane Deason. This is what Harvey said: "I know their were two Bill Mathis's in Pitkin. William H. Mathis was known as "Straight Bill" and William L. Mathis, who stuttered was known as "Stuttering Bill". This the way the people in the town differentiated the two. Not sure of Suttering Bill's lineage line, but I believe I have a contact that can clue me in. In Pitkin, there lives a Sam Matthis whose lineage derives from Stuttering Bill. I have tried to catch him at home, to discuss how Straight Bill and Stuttering Bill are related. If I find out something as to that, I will let you know. I talked with some people that were descendants of Parvin Mathis, son of Straight Bill and they tell me that Stuttering Bill and Straight Bill were first cousins. But I still don't know where Stuttering Bill's family line comes in yet. I am still digging." Harvey tells me that the father of William H was Matthew Albritton Mathis. I have info from my father who got it from his mother, Victoria Kanzonia Mathis Longino (she's listed in the 1910 census). I have also found more than one Wm. in Vernon Parish. The one listed in the 1910 census as Wm. L. age 64 is my ggrandfather. According to my dad's records, he married Jane Gill b. 7/8/1848 d. 6/28/1989. Jane's mother may have been named Drummond. I have seen on the internet an Eliza Jane Gill b. 1839/40 in MS. I don't know if the Wm's are related but it appears they both married Jane's. Do have have any other info? How are we related?
