So to keep the children with the right family they put the fathers name at the end of each child's ( example Mathieu Lepine......Otis Lepine Mathieu, the next Brother may have been lets say David, then his child would have been ......Pierre Lepine David). When the entered Ellis Island the person that signed them in made the mistake and the name changed happened.
