According to the newspapers, the major concerns of Union Parish residents between 1895 and 1905 were the severe drought of 1895-1898 (it resulted in near starvation for the poor and food aid being shipped in to the parish), politics, and the coming of the railroads. When the first Union Parish railroad opened in the latter 1890s and by-passed Shiloh, it helped spell the doom of that town (the 1899 fire that left Shiloh's commercial district in ashes was the other factor). Thus, Farmerville citizens were thrilled to learn in 1897 that the second north/south railroad through the parish would pass through their town. The arrival of the first passenger train in October 1904 was cause for a grand celebration, with Louisiana Governor Blanchard on hand to deliver a speech at the courthouse. There was also a public auction of Farmerville town lots, as businesses seemed ready to flock to Farmerville. Here are a few newspaper articles describing these events: a) 1897 - Railroad coming to Farmerville b) 1904 "Gazette" editorial by J. G. Trimble about the railroad coming to Farmerville and the hopes for a "new" Farmerville. c) 1904 article about the Barbecue Celebration to commemorate the arrival of the railroad to Farmerville d) 1904 article about Governor Blanchard's speech in Farmerville These articles are all indexed here: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/%7Eusgenweb/la/union/newspapers/unionnewsarticles.htm Tim Hudson http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~launion/ _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
