    1. Josiah Deanes, Richard Dean, etc. of Union Parish

    3. Regarding Josiah Deanes, Richard Dean, & Charles E. Dean of Union Parish: According to the 1880 census, Charles E. Dean was the son of Richard Dean (2 May 1814 - 19 June 1896) & Marthey J. Dean (1837 - 7 Dec 1918), who are buried in the Crossroads Cemetery in eastern Union Parish. I have not done any work on Richard, except to observe that he arrived in Union Parish prior to 1850. However, since I descend from Josiah Deanes, I have worked on this family extensively for the past 25 years. I'm sure there is a lot I don't know, but from Union Parish court records, I can say with certainty that Richard Dean is NOT a son of Josiah Deanes (given that Josiah was born in 1800 and Richard in 1814, this is expected). Moreover, I have no evidence that Richard was a brother of Josiah, either. I have found no connection between the two. It appears that Richard may have been related to the Dean families who lived in Lowndes County AL in the 1820s and 1830s. In case anyone is interested, I have included some additional data on Josiah Deanes' family below. Tim Hudson ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADDITIONAL DATA ON JOSIAH DEANES' FAMILY: Josiah Deanes was the son of Jesse Deanes who lived in Hertford Co NC between 1790 and 1826. Josiah consistently spelled his surname like his father: Deanes. I have samples of Josiah's original signature as well as that of his second wife, Sarah Ann Taylor Deanes. They always signed their surname as 'Deanes' or 'Deans', just as did Josiah's eldest two sons. However, Josiah's sons by Sarah used "Dean" when they signed their name. Josiah Deanes was born about 1800 and died on 8 October 1851 in Union Parish. He moved from NC to Butler Co AL about 1825 and remarried there about 1826 to Sarah Ann Taylor, daughter of William Taylor & Catherine Gray. Josiah & Sarah moved with her brother John Taylor to north Louisiana in 1837. Children of Josiah Deanes: By first wife (name unknown): 1) William Deanes (c1822-April 1863); sheriff of Union Parish in 1860s 2) John Deanes (1824 - July/Oct 1863); died at Vicksburg By second wife Sarah Ann Taylor (1808/1811 - 1870s): 3) Jesse Dean (1827 - 1890) 4) Elijah M. Dean (10 Oct 1829 - 25 Feb 1900) 5) Permelia Dean (1832 - 1857/1859) 6) Mary Elizabeth Dean (1835 - 1885) 7) James Alexander Dean (9 Nov 1836 - 10 July 1903) 8) Sarah Catherine Dean (12 May 1839 - 16 Apr 1910) 9) Louisa J. Dean (1842 - 1 Apr 1879) 10) Nancy Dean (1844 - 1851/1858) 11) Thomas Dean (1847- Aug 1850/Apr 1851) 12) Thomas Allen Dean (29 Apr 1851 - 2 Aug 1924) I have more detailed data on these people if anyone is interested. >From: "Jan Bennett" <riverbottom@blackfoot.net> >To: LAUNION-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [LAUNION] Re: [LA-UNION] New List Member Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2004 >21:27:07 -0600 > >I have a Joseph or Josiah DEAN married to Sarah 'Sallie" TAYLOR daughter of >William Taylor and Catherine Gray. > >His bd I have as 1800 in NC and death 3 Oct 1851.
