The following is an uncensored letter from Nancy Edmunds White to her sister, Susan Milner. It describes some of the news of Shiloh in 1878 and of some personal family matters. Nancy Edmunds and Susan Edmunds were the daughters of James Edmunds and Grezella Ann Hay. Nancy married John C. B. White after the death of his first wife. Susan married Jonathan Milner. He served as the pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in the mid-1860s before moving to Comanche Texas in the early 1870s. Roy Austin Shiloh La June 3rd 1878 Mrs. S. C. Milner Dear Sister It is with pleasure I seat myself to answer your kind letter I received last week. We are all well but I am afraid we will get the hooping cough in our family for it is nearly all over the country. Tillie lost her baby with it and there has been six or seven children died up in that neighborhood with it. Cousin Billie Edmonds died last week with the consumtion and Dick Norris died two week ago. Sis Martha is living with Mr. Welch cooking. She has been with them ever since Billie left. If I could see you I would tell you all about her. She create a talk in the settlement by the way she gets. She will not live with Pa nor none of her people. They all moved to Gainville [?]. Mr. Louis Richardson is living at her old place. Cebe Harris bought it --- let Mr. Richardson have it. She have run through everything she had. She is hardly got clothes. Pa gives some thing once & a while. I believe I told you . . . .[part missing] . . . . now he has married again to a Miss Agnes Terry. There was a negro hung in Farmerville the 24th of May for killing a negro woman. But he said to the last that he did not kill her but that did not make any difference they hung him. Frank Pleasant hated to do but mighty bad because his Pa raised the negro. There is going to be a concord at Shiloh next week. There are 625 scholars and I believe they speak of an examination also. The Concord Institute is getting on very well. Mrs. Hargis is teaching music there. Pa is getting on very well. He makes plenty but Nig and Lou dresses finer than most of the white girls. They got two hats a year and about three pair of cloth . . . . a year. None of Pa children dont like the way he treat them for they are so mean to him. They call him a lier anytime they get ready and they do im just as they please & then he will buy them anything the want. I have known him to pay as much as eleven dollars for Nig a dress & if any of us says anything about it he get mad. It is surprising to see how he does. Uncle William is still living about Aunt Carolines. He does work around first one place & then another. Tine has her a sewing machine and Tillie too. Pa gave them to them. He also have Tillie a stove but he has been mad at Sis White two or three years & he think that spites him but it dont. Sis Gusie I dont recon I can not come before Christmas but I am coming some time if I have to take children to come. May be I will stay all next year if I can rent out my place & if I like I will move there. Tell me if you have to . . . . spects. I can see very well but I have not got any teeth. I think I will try to have me a . . . . set put in. But if I have any money I am going to take me out there for I want to see you all worse that I do teeth. I will have the children picture before long as soon as they lay by so we can get a horse. Tell Adah & brother Johnathan to write. Tell brother Johnathan I will send him another . . . . to of the church this year. You must write soon for I look every week for a letter. I will close for the mail rider is in site & I want him to put this in the office. I remain your true sister until death. Give my love to brother Jonathan & his children also except a portion for yourself. N. G.White
