    2. The following is an uncensored letter from Nancy Edmunds White to her niece, Adah Milner, the daughter of Susan and Jonathan Milner. The letter describes events in Shiloh in the summer of 1878. Note the telling of the burning of the Methodist church and the prophesy that it would not be rebuilt. We know now that it was not. Nancy Edmunds was the daughter of James Edmunds and Grezella Ann Hay. She married John C. B. White after the death of his first wife. Roy Austin Shiloh La July 31, 1878 Miss M. A. Milner Dear Adah I seat myself to answer you higly esteemed letter which I was glad to received. That is the first word I have heard from you all in almost a year. I hardly know what to write for I wrote nearly all the news in my other letters. Howsoever, I will tell you the news the Methodist meeting house is burned up. They held pray meeting on a Sunday night & last fourth Sunday night the lamp go knocked over and burned & they could never put it out. I recon the Methodist will not be able to build any more for their main stake is dead the old lady Tabor. They all have not settled here estate, yet. We have a protracted meeting going on at our new meeting house near Bob Tabors. There was eight joined. The protracted meeting begins at Shiloh next Sunday. They have had the church repainted then it looks like a new place. Adah let me tell you there was five babys borned last week. I had a little boy last Saturday night. So did Vick Heard & Puss Shaw one girl Wednesday & Thursday Nett Farris a boy & Friday and another woman on Sis Mary place by the name of Bagges. I named my boy Claude. Well that is enough on the baby line. The crops are very good through this part of the neighborhood but up about Bill Elliott they are not making any corn hardly. Till was down at Tines last Saturday & stayed three days. I have not seen her since last Christmas. She is getting on tolerally well. Tine & Andrew is getting along very well making plenty of everything. They stay at home close. Sis martha is not doing well. Her & Dick is not getting on very well. Dick lives with Dave & she lives with Billie. Dick goes home once a week. I do not know what she will do now for she has sold her place to Cebe Harris & paid of Billie debts & she is without a home. I can’t tell where Billie is going to live next year. Sallie has a boy two months old. Sis Mary have moved down to Pa & is living in the house now with him. She don’t come to see me & I can’t tell anything about what she intends doing but I recon live there, but Pa needs somebody to see to his cooking for them little negro have got to be . . . .[the remainder of letter is missing]
