Thanks to all who responded to my question about genealogy programs. I told my friend your comments and recommendations. I appreciate you all taking the time to reply. Thanks again. Fred
Originally, I used an old DOS-BASED computer program until I upgraded to Windows. Then I purchased FAMILY TREE MAKER, as it was the first Windows' base genealogy program, and in my opinion it still is the best. However, the key to any program is to read the manual. By doing so, you can customize your reports and you can eliminate any extra or blank pages in your reports. Again, it's what you've grown accustom to. Shop around. There's a lot to choose from. I prefer FAMILY ORIGINS. It was originally marketed by Parsons Technology, but like FAMILY TREEMAKER has gone through several owners--now they are both marketed by genealogy.com. I have both programs, and use Family Treemaker to access material such as Gedcom files that others send me. One thing I do not like about FTM is that when you print out Family Group Sheets you get all those extra pages in order to have the notes or sources. Of course you can copy and paste to isolate them onto another page. Family Origins on the other hand is easier to use for entering notes, other spouses, and printing those Family Group Sheets, where the notes follow the FGS without being on so many separate pages. When printing out Family Group Sheets you have more options...for using black lines or whether to include those notes/sources. And on other reports, there are options for using boxes of various kinds or no outline boxes at all. Also it is much easier for me to export/import gedcoms with FO. With FAMILY ORIGINS when you look at a family, all the children show--you don't have to scroll down to catch more than just 4 children to click on. With FO you can do, as far as I know, all that FTM does. I'm sure I do not know ALL that either of them will do. Ann Harper Bonner
I use the FTM and like it fine--the only thing I can add to these comments are be sure and back up your files often. If your entering a large amount of data, back up data when entering (such as every twenty entries)--learned this the hard way. As always, I really enjoy learning tips from all of you. I use Fam. TrMkr too. Only one I have used too. I've compared it with others that friends have and I like it just fine, but I'm one of those folks that is comfortable with what I KNOW. Just be SURE that what ever program they/you use will handle sources. THAT is the single MOST important thing to good research. If you can't prove it, it don't count. I use Brothers Keeper but the new version of all the major programs do the same thing it is the one you are use to that is the best. David P. Manning
What is the concensus of this group about genealogy programs? We use the PAF (Personal Ancestry File) program put out by the Mormons and are pleased with it, but we use an older version that allows us to keep our data on a floppy disk and just have the program itself on the computer hard drive. I had a friend ask me to recommend a computer program and really didn't know what to tell them, so I thought I'd ask you--the experts. What genealogy program to you use? Thanks, Fred Hamilton

Mr. Masling, I hope you get this. I tried to send it once and it came back. Maybe I can reach you through the Union List, if you don't get it by a personal reply. I have a Booth line also from Union Parish. Zachariah Booth, Jr. married Sedonia Brantley in Marion Co. Ga. They moved to Union Parish. His brother, Daniel, married Martha C. Brantley. Martha and Sedonia were cousins. Daniel was my gg grandfather. He lived in Union Co. I don't know much about him after 1890. I would like to share info if you are related through these lines.
