    1. RE: [LAUNION] Port Union, LA
    2. Hudson, Timothy D
    3. Port Union was located on the Ouachita River in southeastern Union Parish, several miles southwest of present-day Sterlington, just south of the Basin of Bayou de Loutre where the Loutre empties into the Ouachita River. On a detailed Union Parish map, if you will follow the river south from Sterlington, the river makes a "pimple" towards the northwest, just before the river ceases to be the eastern boundary of Union Parish. Port Union is located right at that point - the southern base of the "pimple" right where the southeastern boundary of Union Parish changes from the river to the straight line that heads due southwest. Port Union had several cotton warehouses and was quite important for those farmers who lived in near the Loutre, as it was much easier to ship their cotton to New Orleans on the Loutre (when the water was high enough to make it navigable) down to the Ouachita River rather than haul it south to the d'Arbonne and thence towards Trenton (West Monroe). Port Union was an established river port before the war, and I have found it mentioned several times in court records in 1864. There was a post office established there in 1880, but it was discontinued in 1882 with the mail forwarded north to the Ouachita City post office. I have also found records in the 1890s and early 1900s of men working at Port Union and of several large plantations in that area. Does anyone know of a reference to Port Union prior to 1860? 1. [LAUNION] Old Birth Certificates
    2. Hello! I went to Union Parish Courthouse on Monday and dug through their original records again. There are a couple of what appear to be birth certificates in one of the boxes with some of the naturalization records. They are for two people that I couldn't quite make out the names of. One of them appeared to be Heinrich Josten or Tosten born in 1865 and filed into evidence in 1886. The other was G? (maybe Grimmer) Janni? born in 1864 and filed into evidence in 1886. These birth certificates appear to be swedish and one of them includes the parents names and birthdates. I don't know if anyone on this list had swedish ancestors that were in Union Parish around this time period, but I thought these would be very interesting to someone from one of these men's descendants. Also, they have naturalization papers on some of the other residents of Union Parish. I asked and they do not have a Naturalization Book. So, these records are not recorded anywhere. There were quite a few in the boxes. They had to say where they were originally born in these papers. I will be going back to Union Parish at the end of May. I am going to write down all of the names of the people in the box and submit them to this list. It appears that most of them were done in the 1880's. Debbie

Dr. Pardue and Hillary Crawford Hamm preparing for deer hunt. The people in the picture are hard to see because the picture was taken from a distance. I am planning on sending this into the website. 3. I'm looking for info on Selester B. PEARCE PATTERSON (born 1878 in Bienville or Red River Parish, LA) who possibly married Unknown HAY in the early 1900s. Selester's family lived in Red River Parish in 1880 and Desoto Parish in 1900. Her first marriage was to Rufus B. PATTERSON in 1901 in Desoto Parish. He died before 1905. I believe Selester married a second time because an S. B. HAY was mentioned in an estate record of a member of her mother's family. I have possibly found the second marriage and family of Selester B. PEARCE Patterson HAY in the census info below. If so, Selester died before 1920. 1920 Union Parish, Louisiana Census ED 133 Page: 1B Police Jury Ward 7 21/21 HAY, J. E. head m w 51 W La. Geo. Geo. Hay might have married Selester Pearce Patterson and maybe they named the daughter Celester after the mother Selester. Since I'm not 100% sure I'm on the right track, I'd like to find out who the above John E. HAY married, when, and where. It's possible they are not related at all or maybe not my Selester's immediate family. I'm hoping someone can tell me the name of the wife of John E. HAY or anything else to help me confirm or disprove my theories. I've been looking for Selester for a LONG time and would love to know about her family. l'd appreciate very much any information on the family of John E. HAY. Thanks. Cheryll in Alabama

    2. Can you help me forward this query to the proper people to get it posted to the proper board? Requesting any information on the family of Matthew Bloom who is buried near Minden, Webster Parish, Louisiana in 1847 with two of his grandsons in a pasture. The graves are marked and still intact. Little Matthew born 1866, died October 1866 Infant James was born & died one and the same day 1868. Note: Grandpaw Matthew died in 1847. The family was in the area twenty years so they were not just passing through. I just know someone is looking for these graves. Could it be someone on your board? My friends and I would like to know what happened to Matthew and these two little boys as they passed this way for "We spend our lives as a tale that is told." Psalm. 90 King James Version. Thanks, Sherry

    3. Alvin was involved in a serious car accident last November (I was told he was hit headon by a drunk driver who was traveling in the incorrect direction on an interstate). He spent much of Nov-Dec in the hospital and I think earlier this month went into rehab. I sent some materials to Rhonda, the state coordinator, and she posted them. Good luck. 1. [LAUNION] James Taylor and Mary Breedlove
    2. Hello! I went to the Union Parish Courthouse earlier this week. I went through some of the old papers they have stored in boxes there. Some of them are not recorded in the books. I am a descendant of James Taylor and Mary Breedlove Taylor through their daughter, Elizabeth Benjamin Taylor who married Samuel Sawyer. I had a death date on James Taylor but not on Mary. I found two papers there that helped me figure out when Mary died. I found a bill from Dr. F. A. Phelps (this was also Elizabeth B. Taylor's first husband). He was billing the estate of James Taylor for medical attention offered during the months of July and August 1859. He was there both night and day from August 9 through August 13, 1859. I also found another bill from a P. B. Reynolds. It included a charge of $25 for making a coffin for James Taylor on October 30, 1858. There was also another charge of $25 for making a coffin for Mary Taylor on August 13, 1859. It looks like Mary Taylor must have been the patient that Dr. Phelps was visting since his visits stopped on August 13 and the coffin was made the same day. I made copies of both of these papers. I will be glad to share them with anyone who is interested. Debbie

    3. Happy New Year! My brick wall - James Cole. First shows up in U.P. in 1840 census. I have found a William Cole in Ouachita Parish on the 1830 census, who has a son in the household about the right age to be James. I know part of Ouachita Parish was carved out to become part of Union Parish in 1839. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to determine who was in that William Cole household???????
