    1. [LAUNION] Joiner, Lee, Black, Shepherd, Stokes, Carr/Ala. to La.
    2. Cheryll Sumner
    3. Hello, I'm researching the JOINERS, SHEPHERDS, LEES, and BLACKS of Butler Co., Ala. and surrounding counties, Conecuh, Monroe, and Wilcox. I believe several members of these families left Butler Co. in the 1840s (and later) and headed west. Some family members of interest to me stopped in Union Parish, La., and some in Union Co. Ark. The Dempsey JOINER below was the brother of my gg-gm Delilah JOINER Lee (wife of Bennett LEE). Delilah's brother, Bennett JOINER, married Eady SHEPHERD, and I have information that Delilah's brother, Dempsey JOINER, married Jane CARR (no license to prove it). They appear to be the family below on the 1850 and 1860 Union Parish censuses. GG-Gm Delilah also had a sister named Elizabeth who married Allen STOKES, so the Stokes family is connected also. Does the name Sylvanus STOKES ring a bell? Please let me know if you have information or connect to any of the following families: Dempsey JOINER [sometimes spelled JOYNER] is listed on the 1830 Butler Co. 2. Debbie Richard
    3. I made copies of another divorce suit in Union Parish. William Taylor filed for divorce from his wife Nancy Matthews in January 1857. She was also identified as "formerly the Widow Bird". William stated that she had abandoned him and had been gone for two years more or less. He was granted the divorce in October of 1859. I will send scanned copies to anyone who is interested in this divorce suit. I plan on sending this and the other items I have mentioned in previous e-mails to the Union Parish Archives website. 1. [LAUNION] Alabama Bank suit against John Matthews and Alexander M. Taylor
    2. Debbie Richard
    3. I went back to the courthouse in Farmerville yesterday. I went back through the original civil court records again. There was a huge file on The Bank of Alabama suit against John Matthews and Alexander M. Taylor filed in 1851. I copied most of the papers. I am still trying to go through them and decipher them. Some of the handwriting is really bad. I do know that John Matthews and Alexander M. Taylor had signed as security on a debt for Franklin Armstrong in Montgomery, Alabama. They interrogated quite a few witnesses in this suit. Some of the names were Allen Kennedy, George Harrison, M. Dean, Sumter Dean, Albert Arnold, Asa Dean, R. F. Taylor, R. Findley, James J. Stuart, James Harlaw, Hugh W. Watson, John W. Hughes, and James Turner. I'm sure there are more names, I haven't even come close to reading all of the papers yet. One of the witnesses, Dr. James G. Turner, a resident of Alabama, was interrogated and said that John Matthews came to him and asked what h! e should do about the payment to the bank. Franklin Armstrong was declared insolvent. Dr. Turner said Matthews had told him that he was going to remove all of his property and go to Louisiana so the bank would not be able to reach him. Matthews had told him that after talking to his family, neighbors, and members of his Baptist Church, he had been advised not to pay the bank. They seemed to think Armstrong was very capable of paying off his own debt. The debt was for over $5000. I will keep trying to decipher all of these really interesting papers. 3. Hi Elaine :) Thank you so much! I do know she's buried there, but I'm hoping the office has alittle more detail, like her parents names if known: Celia Elizabeth Martin (nee Jones) Born 1863/64 Died 13 March 1933 She is probably buried next to Newitt Martin, but I don't have his DOB/DOD with me right now. If I can reimburse you for time and expenses, please let me do so, and of course, take as much time as you need. Thank you so much!! Lori

    2. Debbie Richard
    3. Please forgive me if you are receiving this for a second time. I didn't think it went through the first time I sent it. I recently went to the Union Parish Courthouse and searched through some of the original civil court records. I came across a petition for divorce. It was filed by Melvina A. Taylor. She was asking for a divorce from her absent husband, Albert M. Gilbert. I didn't realize until I got home that the paper I copied did not have the date on it. It was in the 1860's, I think. I will be going back to Union Parish at the end of this week. I will get the exact date then. She said she had married him in Alabama in 1849 and later moved to Union Parish. She states in the papers that he is was at the time a fugitive from justice and a habitual drunkard. I believe this Melvina Taylor was probably the sister of my Elizabeth Benjamin Taylor. The James Taylor family bible showed a Melvina Taylor as one of the children of James Taylor and Mary Breedlove. I will be glad to scan a copy for anyone interested. Debbie

    1. [LAUNION] Jones/House/Ramsey
    2. Lori Stevens
    3. Hi everyone! I was contacted by a new cousin earlier today and that put me back on the path for my elusive Jones family. Below was taken from Jonathan Mathias Jones's obituary: John M. Jones was born in Scott County, MS. Feb 18, 1852. He moved to Arkansas in the year 1865, staying there three years and then moving to Louisiana in 1868. He was first married to Martha Jane Nolan in December, 1872 with whom he lived for over 25 years. After her death he was again married to M. E. Holloway (nee McMurrain) in 1899 with whom he lived until his death August 21, 1908. I've connected Henry Newton Jones who married Martha L. McCormick and then Loudella Webb, to Jonathan and now I've connected a sister! Celia (Sellie) Elizabeth Jones born November 30, 1863 in Mississippi and died March 13, 1933 in Union Parish. Sellie Jones married Newitt Martin and they had 7 children. Thanks to Carolyn Martin Boies, I have their names and dates of birth. Now we're on the search for these Jones's parents. Family rememberances are that the mother of John, Sellie and Newton, remarried in Louisiana to a man by the name of House. There were two daughters of this union, Mink and Dink (DOB unknown). It is said that Dink House, married Humphrey Ramsey. I am looking for a marriage between a bride JONES to a groom HOUSE, circa 1860+ or anyone familiar with the HOUSE or RAMSEY lineage. We would love to hear from you! Thankyou! Lori 2nd -great grandaughter of Jonathan Mathias Jones and cousin to just about every family in Union Parish :)

His brother (William Chandler) married a Mary Fitts--Mary Fitts and William Chandler lived in Alabama for a while and then moved to Hancock Co., MS. Do you (Sherry) have any information on the Joel Chandler you mentioned above? Sherry and I corresponded several years ago about the Union Gin School in Union Parish. I have found an old photo of my aunt Nell Liggin which her Union Gin School class. I was wondering if you (Sherry) or anyone else on this list might be able to identify the children in her class. She died in an accident in 1943 or 1944 and this would have been in the years just before her death. I have also found a scrapbook of her Union Gin School lesson plans and would like to donate it and the photo of her class to the Bernice Museum. It would be nice to identify the childen in the photo with Nell. Maradee Liggin Cryer

    1. [LAUNION] Fantastic map site!
    2. Bruce Odom
    3. Some of you may know about this one already but I just found it this morning. This site has historical maps of practically the whole world that can be viewed and printed for nothing! However, it will make you want to get highspeed internet access because they are big files. Here is the address: http://www.davidrumsey.com/ Click View the Collection Click Insight Browser Click Search to find what you want to see Click Data--after your thumbnail choices are visible. When you highlight a thumbnail a lot of information about the map will appear in the box on the left. If you scroll down to the bottom you can download the map into the Mr. Sid software. If you don't have Mr. Sid you can download it from there. Mr Sid is good stuff with which you can magnify, pan, save, and print what you see or the whole image. The 1879 Rand-McNally map of LA is fantastic. It has the township and range lines from the Louisiana Meridian, which just happens to run through the middle of the parish. For those of you who have enquired about such information here it is. For map nuts like me this is a dream site! I was sorry to learn of the death of Alvin Jones. Now we know why the genweb page was so far behind. He did good work with it until his accident. I look forward to the same sort of work from the new coordinator as soon as he becomes familiar with the process. I also look forward to all the information that is backlogged. Happy New Year everybody! Bruce Odom

    2. Hudson, Timothy
    3. Hi Dena, According to information from the Louisiana State Archives and the Union Parish courthouse, the earliest known complete tax records for Union Parish date only from 1864/1865. None exist for the 1840s/1850s. There is a tax document for 1838 Ouachita Parish (which includes present-day Union Parish), as well as an 1863 incomplete tax record. You can purchase the Union Parish tax records on microfilm from the Louisiana State Archives for the period 1865 - 1900s. The originals were moved from the courthouse to the State Archives in Baton Rouge some years ago, very poorly microfilmed, and then destroyed. Some years are more legible than others. Other than deeds or succession records, I have seen very few Union Paish records from the 1850s that list names of slaves. Happy New Year! When I received no response after one month earlier this fall regarding a submission to the archives page, I contacted Ms. Rhonda Smith, the Louisiana State Archives Coordinator. She responded that she saw no problem with the site and implied that the fault was ours by not sending him information. It has been so long ago that I forgot which years we did transcribe. About three months ago I received notice the 1920 census is now on line. The problem is, it has never been added to the Union Parish site. Also, I tried to submit a record on the History of Canaan Baptist Church. I never received a response to the submission, and it still is not on the site. If any of you are interested in having a copy, let me know and I will send you a copy by e-mail. This information came from a pamphlet handed out at one of the "Homecomings" during the (I was told) 1970's. Between the archives and trying to actually find the courthouse open, I have found that Union Parish is one of the most difficult for researching. ----- Original Message ----- From: Hudson, Timothy To: LAUNION-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2003 1:41 PM Subject: RE: [LAUNION] 1920 Union Parish Census On Line Shawn, Thanks very much for the information about the 1920 census. I have also had tremendous trouble getting anything added to the site and a response from Mr. Jones. In fact, very little has been added in the past two years. When I received no response after one month earlier this fall regarding a submission to the archives page, I contacted Ms. Rhonda Smith, the Louisiana State Archives Coordinator. She responded that she saw no problem with the site and implied that the fault was ours by not sending him information. After the numerous times I have submitted materials to the site and never received a response, I don't know how to respond to her until others complain about the situation. My only suggestion would be for those of us feel so inclined to complain to Ms. Smith. Merry Christmas! The new address is smarcmar@direcway.com. Secondly, Karen Rice and I transcribed some census records for Union Parish several years ago. It has been so long ago that I forgot which years we did transcribe. About three months ago I received notice the 1920 census is now on line. The problem is, it has never been added to the Union Parish site. For those of you that are interested in viewing the records, you can go to the following address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cenfiles/la/union/1920/ed132/ I have tried to contact Mr. Jones several times to ask why the link had not been added, but I have never received a response. It is really discouraging when you find information you think may be helpful to others, and take the time and energy to submit the information to only be ignored by those asking for valuable information!!
