    1. Re: [LAUNION] Thanks to our contributors!
    2. My thanks also go to all of you who have been writing and contributing to the Union Parish Web Site. It is looking good. Yesterday I had a wonderful visit with Roy and Alton Austin. Roy delivered, to me, two books right off the Press. JOHN FERGUSTON AN AMERICAN REVOLUTION SOLDIER COMPILED BY ROY L. AUSTIN It is well written, documented, with pictures, and fully indexed. The book has a beautiful hard bound cover (391 pages) I highly recommend this book. It covers the Ferguson, Feazel-Wise-Ausin family of Union Parish and their descendants. The price is forty dollars. I am not sure about the tax and cost of shipping since I do not live in Louisiana. Roy L. Austin 300 Missionary Court Madisonville Louisiana 70447 The book is dedicated to his Dad, Alton Roy Austin. Thank you for reading this message Sherry Gresham Gritzbaugh

    1. RE: [LAUNION] Thanks to our contributors!
    2. Tim, I just want to thank you for doing such a great job with the archives this year! You have done an outstanding job of keeping the archives up. Thanks for all your hard work! To the list: I plan on making a trip to Union Parish Courthouse one day this week. I will be glad to do some lookups while I'm there. I can't promise photo copies of everything I look up, due to the costs. Christmas has left me a little tapped out right now. But, I will take my digital camera and may be able to get some copies with that. Just let me know! Debbie Richard Original Message: ----------------- From: T. D. Hi again, As this year draws to a close, I wish to thank all of our contributors for their work in helping to improve the Union Parish Archives. These people are well-known to us for their submissions over the years, and they have continued to submit numerous items for our archives this past year: Karen Mabry Rice - thanks for being such an incredible asset to the Union Parish archives with your census and cemetery contributions and support! Shawn Martin - a huge thanks to you (and to your ten fingers!) for the huge mound of transcriptions of Union Parish censuses, successions, church minutes, etc. Your work is amazing and of great benefit to me personally as well as the archives! Debbie Richards - thanks for sharing your data with the archives and list every time you visit the courthouse! Gene Barron - thanks very much for the wonderful old photographs of people and places in Union Parish - please send us more! We have a relatively new contributor to the Archives this year - Mary Anne Williams, who has braved expensive gasoline prices, rain, wind, black widow spiders, poorly marked Union Parish roads and twilight evenings in the middle of nowhere to survey Union Parish cemeteries for us. She then comes home and types them and submits to us. Please keep it up, Mary Anne (but beware of snakes when the weather warms up!!). 1. New items on the Union Parish Archives
    2. T. D. Hudson
    3. Hello everyone! The following items are new on the Union Parish USGenWeb Archives since the last update: 1) Successions transcribed & submitted by Shawn Martin dated 1859 - 1862: a) Marlin T. Crow b) William M. McCullom c) Susan Ann Mixon Honeycutt (wife of Austin Honeycutt), d) update on William Sutton's succession e) John B. Tubb f) Charles Larkin Gilbert & wife Permelia Taylor Gilbert This link has a table with the transcribed Union Parish successions: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union/successions.htm 2) New Union Parish Cemeteries from Mary Anne Williams: a) complete listing of Crossroads Cemetery b) Dean Cemetery c) Marion Baptist Cemetery (white section) d) Ouachita City Cemetery e) Reppond Family Cemetery d) Roark-Stewart Cemetery Here is a table of all Union Parish cemeteries: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union/cemeteries.htm 3) Photographs of the family of John Berry Adcock and his wife Loretta Jane Gray, from James Williams: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/%7Eusgenweb/la/union/photos/familya-i.htm 4) Zion Hill Cemetery photographs from Bruce Odom (more to be added soon): http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/la/union/cemetery/zion-hill.html 5) Thanks to Karen Mabry Rice's work, we now have improved images from 1910 census. Pages 1 - 360 are now much more easy to read that the old images: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union/census/union-1910.htm/ 6) New obituaries: W. K. Rushing, 1895 Joseph A. Upshaw, 1898 Rachel Beaird, 1904 W. A. Kirkpatrick, 1904 Click here to view a table of Union Parish Obituaries: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union/obituaries.htm 7) Newspaper article about a stranger to Farmerville who stole a horse from a local business: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/union/newspapers/articles/1895horse.txt 8) Articles about the railroad coming to Farmerville. According to the newspapers, the major concerns of Union Parish residents between 1895 and 1905 were the severe drought of 1895-1898 (it resulted in near starvation for the poor and food aid being shipped in to the parish), politics, and the coming of the railroads. When the first Union Parish railroad opened in the latter 1890s and by-passed Shiloh, it helped spell the doom of that town (the 1899 fire that left Shiloh's commercial district in ashes was the other factor). Thus, Farmerville citizens were thrilled to learn in 1897 that the second north/south railroad through the parish would pass through their town. The arrival of the first passenger train in October 1904 was cause for a grand celebration, with Louisiana Governor Blanchard on hand to deliver a speech at the courthouse. There was also a public auction of Farmerville town lots, as businesses seemed ready to flock to Farmerville. Here are a few newspaper articles describing these events: a) 1897 - Railroad coming to Farmerville b) 1904 "Gazette" editorial by J. G. Trimble about the railroad coming to Farmerville and the hopes for a "new" Farmerville. c) 1904 article about the Barbecue Celebration to commemorate the arrival of the railroad to Farmerville d) 1904 article about Governor Blanchard's speech in Farmerville These articles are all indexed here: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/%7Eusgenweb/la/union/newspapers/unionnewsarticles.htm Tim Hudson http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~launion/ _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! 1. Finally - a "real" message about new material on the archives
    2. T. D. Hudson
    3. Once again, I am sorry for the numerous "junk" messages from me to the list, all of which dealt with the same "new" material on the archives. I sent out several messages containing the same information before I realized that my computer was fine and the list was not working. Also, a few of those were duplicated by rootsweb when they fixed the problem, causing a lot of "junk email" from this list. Hopefully everything is working ok now. Due to various distractions, I am behind in posting material to the archives. I have numerous photographs that I will try to get up in early December. Please have patience with me! Below is the new material on the archives since last week. Please join me in applauding our contributors - Shawn Martin and Mary Anne Williams, both of whom continue to do great work for us. Shawn continues her succession transcriptions and is also working on the 1900 census transcriptions for us. Mary Anne and her husband have traipsed through a number of Union Parish cemeteries recently, surveying them for the archives. Shawn and Mary Anne: thanks so much for your efforts!! Also thanks to Karen Mabry Rice for her ongoing work to format things the files correctly. 1) Shawn submitted these 1860 - 1862 Union Parish Successions this week: Dr. Franklin L. Cook John A. G. Davis Solomon Feazle Isaac A. Hill Job M. Williams Go to this link to see the transcriptions: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union/unionsuccessions.htm 2) Mary Anne contributed these Union Parish cemeteries: Cook Dean Enterprise Spigener Go here to see the cemeties: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union/unioncemeteries.htm Coming in December: more successions, the complete cemetery surveys for these cemeteries: Reppond, Marion Baptist Church, Ouachita City, Crossroads, Roark, and hopefully, Concord. We might have the first portion of the 1900 census as well. Happy Thanksgiving!!! 3. Hello! I apologize for the repeated emails about the same new material on the Union Parish Archives. Technical difficulties caused glitches in the Rootsweb mailing lists (they did not work for a while), and I did not realize this until after I had sent the same message three times. 2. T. D. Hudson
    3. Hello, everyone, Here are some items posted on the Union Parish USGenWeb Archives since the last update. All items are linked from the main page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm 1) Photographs from Gene Barron of men working for the Summit Lumber Company, located at Randolph, in northwestern Union Parish (between Junction City and Lillie). These pictures give fascinating shots of the huge old logs that used to cover the piney hills of Union Parish, trains, mules and oxen used to haul logs, etc.. Be sure and read the historical information Gene supplied as well. The photos and historical information are found here: http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/la/union/community/summit-lumber.html 2) Also from Gene is a letter written in 1914 by Izzie P. Breazeal to his first cousin in Texas following the bankruptcy of the Summit Lumber Company. Izzie worked at the company between 1912 and 1914. 1. Union Parish Archives - problems getting to new items
    2. Timothy D. Hudson
    3. Hi everyone, First, I apologize that this message relates more to computer issues rather than Union Parish history/genealogy. However, I think it is relevant to the list because several people have written me since last night about problems viewing the new items I just posted on the archives. I double and triple checked, and the new items are all there. In this particular case, most of these problems relate to your computer's internet cache. If you visit the Union Parish Archives very often and you do not clean out your computer's cache regularly, then it will always remember the old versions of any page you have previously visited. So to see the newest updates, you must always click on "Refresh" at the top of your browser, every time you go to a different page you have previously visited. Personally, I find this process annoying, so I wipe my cache clean daily (this can also slightly speed up your computer, so they say). You can do this manually, or the anti-virus vendors (Norton, McAfee) have software that make wiping your cache clean easy. I hope this helps, and let me know of any other problems. 1. Big correction and apology
    2. Shawn Martin
    3. List members, I must apologize for my last message. I said Virginia Tech, when I should have said Louisiana Tech. I guess you all now know where I live. If the URL that I type in the body of the last message does not work the following will get you there. Google search for "Prescott Memorial Library" Click on "Site Search" Search for "Union Parish" This will take you to the "Special Collections Listings" Again, I apology for any confusion my "senior moment" may have caused. Shawn Martin
