I'm researching the Langston and Lambright families of Union Parish. They moved into the area around 1850. Some later went to Winn Parish. Send me note if you have anything on these families. Scott Langston
I have went to the library today and made a copy of some marriage records and cemetery records from Union and Claiborne Parish for the following surnames. Weldon, Taylor, Gray, Edmonds, Futch, Tabor, & Hudson and some others. If you would like me to look up any just hollow: I copied the entire list from the Weldon Cemetery and Shiloh Cemetery in Union Parish. I haven't got the copies indexed yet so I will slow, but be patient. Hello All You Cousins Out There, My Union Parish connections are both sides - both maternal and paternal. Here is a beginning of my maternal side. Let me know if any of you connect with any of these lines: James Doster, born February 11, 1780 in SC married in about 1798 in Wilkes County GA Sarah Hollis, born about 1775 also in SC. They had 11 children, 9 females and 2 males. Perella Doster born March 26, 1816 in GA married Martin Hardin (born about 1817 in SC) on December 22, 1841 in Tallapoosa County, AL. Mary Ellen Hardin born in July 1852 in Alabama married Marion P. Raborn (born August 1852 in Union Parish) on December 20, 1870. Nancy Ellen Raborn born February 8, 1883 in Union Parish married Thomas Jefferson Howell (born March 27, 1863 in Union Parish) on January 21, 1900. >From this union were born 7 children, 5 females and 2 males. Berdell Howell born December 6, 1913 married Joe Add Norris (born April 11, 1911 in Union County AR) on January 14, 1933. >From this union were born 4 children, 3 females and 1 male. Helen Ruth Norris was born in Union Parish on December 21, 1935, married Arthur Lee Stout (born May 14, 1934 in Friendswood, Galveston, Texas) in Galveston County, TX on March 31,1956. Will send a more complete descendancy chart at a later date. Thanks for the information I have gleaned in such a short time from this list. Ruth Stout
Louis, You are too kind. Thank you, but this was just a fluke. You guys were all out there waiting for somebody to stir the pot, and I just happened to have the biggest stick (read: mouth)! Just RE-read your posting re: the Canadys that live in Oklahoma. Where in Okla? I went to school with a girl named Ann Canada who still lives here. Her folks were from the same little town as my Mabry grandparents, and her grandparents and great grandparents are buried in the same little cemetery (which I just surveyed) as mine. They are W.C. Canada, b. 1844, d. 1924, wife Frances, b. 1841, no year of death; and John P. Canada, 1870-1937, wife Sarah E. 1875-1940. The stones were placed some time in the 1950s and I believe the family originally spelled the name Canady. Karen
Hi cousins, Just heard from my State Co-ordinator on the Archives Project (I forgot she's on this list - her husband is from UP!) and she says that when we get those family group sheets done for the Union Reunion, they can be posted in the archives - if you want. Maybe Sue (was it you who volunteered, Sue?) can put a little place down at the bottom of the form to check whether or not you want your family data posted in the archives. Later, Karen

Joyce, Thanks for making a contact. It took me awhile to respond because I wanted to go back in my notes from Union Parish. I found I had a Sue BARRETT MCCULLER b. 1846, d. 1924, & buried in Bernice City Cemetery and B.A. MCCULLER b. 1848, d. 1926, & buried in Bernice City Cemetery. I have not contacted them to my MCCULLAR family but have kept the information hoping it would someday contact. Was their name spelled MCCULLER or MCCULLAR? Do you know when they came to Union Parish? Who was B.A.'s parents? In the Pine Grove Cemetery located southeast of Bernice, there are several MCCULLERs. They include: O.B. MCCULLER 1852-1902 Beulah MCCULLER BEVANS 1904- William Dave MCCULLER 1869-1947 Lawton MCCULLER 1908- Edna P. MCCULLER 1910-1983 Dumas Murden MCCULLER 1879-1963 Mae G. I have always thought there was a connection between the two families, but I haven't been able to prove it at all. Karen, I do not believe they are copywrited. They are from the curch minutes. There is also a newspaper clipping that says the same thing. The Harmony Baptist church minutes originals are in my aunts possesion. You might be interested in the Oak Grove church minutes. I have the original copy. It is in a very old ledger. It datses back to 1886 and most of it written by my gg grandfather. I plan to list the names and stuff to the other list, as soon as I get to it. They met in the same church that is in the pictures. Gina >Gina, >The data you posted on the charter members of Harmony and Pine Grove Baptist >Churches - did it come from some kind of uncopyrighted material that we >could put on the archives page? >Karen >
Sue Lynn, We don't know the dates for the Union Reunion yet, but so far the plan is to have it in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Shiloh Baptist Church, which is in the spring or summer of 1999. As soon as cousin Roy gets the dates on that, we'll know what we're shootin' for. Karen
Addie Mae, I failed to respond to your earlier comments about Farmerville. Louis informs me that the town was named after a pioneer family by the name of Farmer, btw, and is the parish seat of Union Parish. I always thought it was called Farmerville because that's what the people around there did for a living - silly me! But to respond about the beautiful town of Farmerville - I actually went to school there - in a two story white clapboard schoolhouse - for one day! I was visiting my cousins, the Longs, and I got to go to school with their daughter Jeannette - we were both 10 at the time! BJ, In response to your comments to Louis earlier about Arelia indexing the courthouse records, I have talked to three people who knew Arelia well in the last two days, and unfortunately the index was in Arelia's head. She volunteered at the courthouse and helped people look things up, and several of us on this list owe her a big debt. But there was no indexing project, and the only papers she had pertained to her own family lines, which did not crossover with many of us, and which have been passed on to family members who will preserve them and share them with other genealogists who do have those lines. It's a nice idea though. I know a lady who was attempting to compile an index to the unindexed records of Franklin Co GA from microfilm of those records. This might be a good project for someone - either the microfilming or the indexing. Addie Mae, Boy! Was I sleepy last night when I got confused on the issue of Tressie Cook's "Cook-Heard and Allied Lines" and Harold Mullenax's book that Arelia mentioned to you. I'm going to try to track Harold and Helen down and see if they are alive and well in Tulsa, and find out just what we are talking about here - a real book, or their enormous collection of family group sheets on Tubbs, Heards, Copelands, and a bunch of others - and part of which I have. Anna, The list of burials you mentioned from Webster Cemetery. Is this from a copyrighted book, or is it something you did yourself that we could post on the Union Parish Archives page? Also the Shiloh list, Pisgah list, and especially the Shiloh History - if it's dated 1909 I know it's out of copyright. I would like so much to be able to put those on the archives page. If you want to communicate privately about this, my e-mail is [email protected] Mary Margaret, Thanks for the suggestion about getting the Cook-Heard book and the other Heard book through ILL. Tina, Thanks for admitting you actually live in Union Parish so the rest of us can bug you about doing stuff for us (joke!) Bill, Did you enjoy your nap? Thanks for the great url!!! Gina & Christie, May I highly recommend Christie's suggestion re: lunch. On another list I'm on, the one I mention worked so well because everybody reposts their lines about once a month for the new members, my cousin in Lubbock and I decided to meet each other half way for lunch and chat - it was a ball and we are now close friends That's all for this one, Karen
Cousins, I can't tell by the subject line if Tim sent this message directly to me or posted the following message to the list so I am going to run the risk of posting it a second time, because the information in it is very valuable, especially the part about being able to borrow the microfilms through Inter Library Loan: Dear Karen, All known Louisiana newspapers are indexed and held by the Mississippi Valley Collection, Hill Memorial Library on the LSU campus in BAton Rouge. They have a newspaper project which used to have a webpage. I'll give the URL below, but I have not checked it in a while. You can purchase old copies (the microfilm reels) of newspapers from them. I own many of the old Gazette and Home ADvocate issues. THe oldest extant newspaper dates from 1866 and is held at the La Tech library in Ruston. Although the "Union Record" (the 1866 extant newspaper) was published throughout the 1870s, no issues survive for that decade. It ceased publication in the early 1880s, and I think the earliest newspaper in that decade is an 1883 Gazette. Here is the URL: http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/lnp.html Louisiana Newspaper Project THis may be of interest to Union Parish researchers. I have long harbored hopes of abstracting the old newspapers, but never yet had the time. They are filled with interesting information, and some death notices. Tim Hudson
Oh my, well it's okay if you're on this list under an assumed computer! (chuckle) Yes, Wayne's the greatest. We're just going to have to drag him kicking and screaming into this computer age, like I was seven years ago. Refresh my lousy Texas geography - where's Carthage? Karen
Louis, Shawnee and Altus are about 160 miles apart, but some time in the next week or two I am going up to OKC to search in the Historical Society library for some census stuff and for some goodies to put on the Archives page. They have just about every cemetery book for Oklahoma, so tell me what you need. Karen
I am a Crow descendent and we have a Crow reunion in Marion every year. When is the Union Reunion? This is quite a group. -- *******SueLynn Sandifer, Ouachita Parish Coordinator for LAGenWeb******* Ouachita Parish Genealogy Page http://www.bayou.com/~suelynn/ouachita.html
Cousin Ruth, Welcome to Union Parish! This is a jumpin' little list, and we've just launched planning for a 1999 Union Reunion in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Shiloh Baptist Church. One of our gal cousins Sue Linder-Lindsey is going to put up a family group sheet on the web that we can all use to put our family data in, and then we're going to donate a copy to the genealogy section of the local library. One of our boy (good ole boy?) cousins, Roy Austin, is going to post a list of things everyone can jump in and volunteer for soon to make it happen. In the meantime, we're all just posting names and data like crazy and having lots of fun. We're glad you've joined us! Karen
I was raised near Smackover, Ark now live in Augusta, Arkansas. My Dison and Jackson family is from the area around Rum Center Frances Totty
Karen - Where is Altus, Okla near? I need someone in Shawnee, Okla to do a lookup for me or if someone has a Cemetery Book for that region need five dates. Roy Austin - Count me in. I look forward to helping get the project underway for a reunion. Sue Lynn - Know the Danleys of Strong well and also Pauline. Graduated from Strong High School with Harry Danley, who moved to Strong from Oak Grove - now he lives in Norphlet or did the last time we had a class reunion. Tina - Where is the Point Community located in Union Parish? Sue Linder - Have you visited Barton Library in El Dorado and looked at the microfilm copies of the early 1900s newspaper of Felsenthal? The paper is great - tells lots of items of Strong, Bolding, Dollar Junction, Lapile, etc. Next time you are in El Dorado, browse through it. Also the Union County Genealogical Society has the El Dorado Newspaper on microfilm - sure beats going over the News Times Office and going upstairs and straining your eyes, plus either freezing or burning up depending on the season. Does anyone know what early (prior to 1900) newspapers are available for Union Parish? Does LSU have copies? If so, what is their site? Thanks. Louis
